Nov. 4, 2008 - California voters approve Proposition 8, a state ballot initiative that adds a section to the state constitution that says that only marriages between a man and a woman are valid in the state.

Nov. 5, 2008 - Three lawsuits challenging Proposition 8 are filed to the California Supreme Court.

May 26, 2009 - California Supreme Court rejects the challenges but leaves in place existing same-sex marriages.

Aug. 4, 2010 - In a separate case, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, federal Judge Vaughn R. Walker overturns Proposition 8, saying it violates the constitutional right to equal protection.

Dec. 6, 2010 - U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit hears arguments in appeal of Walker's decision.
