A 68-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Germantown on Wednesday morning by a unknown suspect, the same man who raped her seven months earlier, officials said.

The assailant also is believed to have raped another woman, 86, who lives at an assisted living center across the street.

"We have a very dangerous individual out here, and we need the public's help," said Detective Patrick McNerney of Montgomery County police.

Police released a composite sketch of the suspect Wednesday, which was drawn after the 68-year-old woman was attacked in June. The victim was shown the sketch again Wednesday and said there was nothing she wanted to change based on seeing the man a second time, McNerney said.

"We really need to get this person off the street," he said.

McNerney, a 30-year police veteran, said he has never come across a case in which someone raped a stranger after entering her home and returned to sexually assault her again.

"It's disheartening that it happened the first time," he said. "It's almost beyond words that it happened to the same person again."

McNerney said that the victim has remained "very stoic" even after the second attack but that she is extremely upset by the assaults.

Both victims live alone. The assailant wasn't armed but didn't need a weapon to intimidate the victims. "He's shown a tendency to prey on people who can't necessarily defend themselves," McNerney said.

Here is a timeline of the case, according to police:

l June 19: A man enters the 68-year-old's apartment in the 20300 block of Beaconfield Terrace as she is asleep in her bed. He sexually assaults her and flees.

l Aug. 21: A man enters through an unlocked window of a home at the Churchill Senior Living Center, 21000 Father Hurley Blvd. The 86-year-old victim is in bed. He sexually assaults her and flees through a window. The victim is taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that are not life-threatening, police say.

l Detectives link the attacks through witness descriptions and DNA evidence.

l Just before 1 a.m. Wednesday: Police are called to the 68-year-old's apartment, where they learn that the suspect had forced his way inside and sexually assaulted her again.

The suspect in the Beaconfield Terrace attacks is described as a black man, 5-foot-10, about 145 pounds, who appeared to be 16 to 25 years old and had no facial hair. The suspect in the Churchill Senior Living incident is described as a black man, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9, with a thin build, who appeared to be 18 to 25 years old and had no facial hair.

Police ask anyone with information about the assaults to call 240-773-5070. Those who wish to remain anonymous or be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 can call 866-411-TIPS (8477).
