Same-sex nuptials bill hearing date

Sunday, January 30, 2011; A01

A Feb. 8 hearing has been set on one of the highest-profile issues before the Maryland General Assembly this year: legalizing marriage between same-sex couples.

The Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee will take up a bill sponsored by Majority Leader Robert J. Garagiola (D-Montgomery) that would remove a provision in Maryland law limiting marriage to relationships between a man and a woman.

The hearing date signals that lawmakers may deal with the issue earlier in the 90-day session than is often the case with controversial bills. Committees typically do not vote on the same day that a hearing is held, but a majority of the Senate panel's members have expressed support for the legislation.

Langley Park killing

A teenager has been arrested and charged in the fatal stabbing of a man who was found dead Jan. 8 in Langley Park, Prince George's County police said Friday.

Oscar Rosales-Madrid, 16, of Langley Park was charged with first- and second-degree murder in the death of Alejandro Marcos Diaz Vasquez, 30, authorities said.

Deputy Chief Gary Cunningham, who commands the county police Bureau of Support Services, said that a witness tipped investigators to Rosales-Madrid's involvement in the killing and that the suspect later confessed.
