About Egypt

Capital: Cairo

Geography: Egypt is a country in North Africa, about three times the size of New Mexico. It has vast deserts but is also home to the world's longest river, the Nile, and its delta.

Population: About 80 million people; 33 percent of its residents are age 14 or younger.

Education: Percentage of the population over age 15 who can read and write is 71 percent. (83 percent of men, 59 percent of women).

Language: Arabic is the official language; many educated people speak English and French.

Key industries: Agriculture, textiles, tourism, chemicals.
