Biography: Tantawi rose to defense minister and commander in chief of the armed forces under President Hosni Mubarak.
He began his military career as an infantryman in 1956 and played a role in all of Egypt's most momentous conflicts, from the 1956 Suez Crisis to the Six-Day War and the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.
During the 1991 Persian Gulf War, he played a key role in leading Egypt's forces in the coalition that liberated Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion.
He has been military attache to Pakistan, commander of the Presidential Guard and infantry brigade commander.
