Why bring up Lara Logan's race and complexion?

As I was reading the Feb. 17 op-ed excerpt from Alexandra Petri's ComPost blog ["What happened to CBS's Lara Logan"], I was taken aback by this line: "This sort of story has a pernicious staying power: not a faceless statistic, but a known, blond, white woman."

I will admit that the story of an American reporter being attacked in Egypt hit closer to home for me because I am an American, but I certainly hope that it doesn't matter that Lara Logan is blond or white.
