Immigrants who commit crimes

Regarding Kate McCauley's Feb. 19 Free for All letter objecting to a Metro headline mentioning the illegal status of a murder suspect:

Most people who object to illegal immigration do so not because they are "racists" but because there is a perception that some who entered the country illegally are criminals and abuse social services. If all of those here illegally were hardworking and non-criminal, the resistance to letting them stay under a defined government program would cease. Mentioning the legal status of a criminal is perfectly appropriate.
