It's a dog's life

The "Mutts" comic strip by Patrick McDonnell is warm and amusing. Earl the dog and Mooch the cat couldn't be more lovable. McDonnell's occasional portrayal of shelter animals reflects an admirable concern for pets in need of love and care.

However, Guard Dog is always pictured on a taut, short chain, as in the Feb. 19 cartoon, apparently as his only way of life. This is painful to observe and seems out of keeping with McDonnell's otherwise humane philosophy.

How about giving him a break, Mr. McDonnell, and free Guard Dog? I feel pretty sure Earl and Mooch would approve.
