PARIS -- UNESCO's chief says the organization is stopping all cooperation with Libya's government and suspending a partnership with a charity group headed by Moammar Gadhafi's son.

The Paris-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization says director-general Irina Bokova took the measures after recent U.N. actions critical of Libya's human rights record.

Bokova's move includes halting a 10-year partnership deal with the Gadhafi International Foundation for Charity Associations - chaired by Seif al-Islam Gadhafi. The charity has helped UNESCO fund activities in Libya.

Bokova said in a statement Wednesday she was moved to act in part because of recent statements from high in the Libyan government "inciting further violence against the civilian population."
