It's a mollusk, not a crustacean

In his Feb. 28 article, "Farm Bureau targets EPA pollutant limits for Chesapeake Bay," Darryl Fears stated that oysters are crustaceans.

They are not crustaceans (members of the phylum Arthropoda, subphylum Crustacea). Oysters are mollusks (members of the phylum Mollusca, class Bivalvia).

The non-scientific term "shellfish" lumps crustaceans and mollusks together; perhaps that was the word he was searching for.

It does not take a degree in biology to look such things up before going to press.
