Flummoxed by fleeing legislators

Regarding the March 4 front-page article "Some debate; others decamp":

Admittedly, many years have passed since I studied U.S. government in school. As I recall, though, debate and diplomacy are central to democracy. How do elected officials who object to legislation and who literally walk away from voting on it demonstrate support of democratic principles with such behavior?

What message does this send to our children about working together to deliberate in a civil manner, to make tough choices and to resolve differences?
