Where to buy poppy seeds in bulk

Although you can find poppy seeds in almost any supermarket, they are usually packaged in 1- or 2.5-ounce jars costing $5 and up - too small and expensive for the accompanying recipes.
I used to make my mother smuggle bags of poppy seeds when she came to visit from Israel. Poppy seeds are now available in bulk (12 to 16 ounces, $6 to $8) in European, Indian and some Mediterranean markets, spice stores and online. If you have an "in" at a restaurant supply store, such as Restaurant Depot in Alexandria, a 16-ounce container of poppy seeds there costs less than $4.
Remember to store poppy seeds in the freezer; because of their oils they can go rancid.
