Groundbreaking Saturday for fields on Witter land

New sports fields are on the way to the Witter property.

Mayor William D. Euille (D) and the Alexandria City Council will break ground for a lighted baseball field and two other fields Saturday.

The 13-acre property was given to the city as part of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge agreement between Alexandria and the Federal Highway Administration.

The athletic facility will include restrooms, parking for 145 vehicles and pavilions. The foot path and cemetery will remain.

For details about the project, go to www.alexandriava.gov/witterfields.

Foundation formed to support Lubber Run

The Lubber Run Amphitheatre Foundation was formed last month. The community organization aims to unite Arlington County government with residents to run the park facility.

County officials closed the amphitheater last year over safety concerns. Neighbors have been working to preserve the theater, which is more than 40 years old, and its free programming. The foundation is applying for tax-exempt status.
