Leesburg woman killed in collision with SUV

A Leesburg woman was killed March 2 when her car ran a stop sign in McLean and was hit by an oncoming sport-utility vehicle, according to Fairfax County police.

Sow-Hoong Hon was driving a 1999 Honda Accord north on Bellview Road about 1:30 p.m. when she did not stop at a sign at Old Dominion Drive, police said.

A 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser struck the driver's door of the Honda, police said.

Hon and the driver of the SUV were taken to hospitals, and Hon, 42, was pronounced dead.

The driver of the SUV had injuries that were not life-threatening.

Neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash, police said.

Loudoun man pleads guilty to stabbing wife in 2009

A Leesburg man facing a second trial on charges stemming from a 2009 assault on his wife plead guilty to aggravated malicious wounding last week, according to a statement from the office of the commonwealth's attorney.

In April 2010, a Loudoun County jury found Mark Haldeman guilty in the July 2009 attack on his wife, Irene Haldeman, who was stabbed in the back and neck. Haldeman was sentenced to 25 years in prison, the statement said.

After the trial, Haldeman's attorney raised concerns regarding one of the legal instructions provided to the jury, and the judge declared a mistrial, the statement said. A second trial was scheduled to begin this month.

Haldeman's sentencing hearing is May 5. He faces a possible term of 20 years to life in prison.
