Albert G. Paulsen, 91, a periodontist and retired Navy Reserve rear admiral who ran a dental practice in Falls Church from 1954 until he retired in 2000, died Feb. 10 at his home in Falls Church. He had prostate cancer.
Dr. Paulsen joined the Navy in 1942 and was stationed at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda and in China during World War II. He retired from the reserves in 1977.
He was a gardener and owned a nursery in Great Falls from 1965 until the mid-1990s. He volunteered at Green Spring Gardens Park in Annandale and Meadowlark Gardens Regional Park in Fairfax County. He was a member of the Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association.
Albert George Paulsen, a native of New Haven, Conn., graduated from Loyola College in Baltimore in 1942. He received a dental degree in 1945 from Georgetown University and a master's degree in dentistry in 1950 from Northwestern University in Illinois. He was an associate professor at Georgetown from 1945 until 1990.
He was a past president of the Northern Virginia Dental Society and the Greater Washington Society of Periodontology. He served on an advisory committee to help Northern Virginia Community College establish a dental program.
His wife of 60 years, Sara Jordan Paulsen, died in January; a son, Jeffrey J. Paulsen, died in 1997.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverley S. Paulsen of Falls Church; a brother; a sister; and three grandsons.
