Silencing Westboro without harming free speech
I agree with and support Romaine Patterson's silent activism ["Hate speech vs. our better angels," Outlook, March6]. Why don't we just turn the other cheek? I strongly disagree with the church's protests (especially when directed toward a military funeral), but their right to free speech must be upheld.
However, that doesn't mean we have to listen to whatever they say. They only get their words out because someone is paying attention to them. This is further exacerbated through media coverage and controversy. By refusing to give them publicity, we can refuse to be hurt by their message of hate.
