Too harsh toward local musicians
The National Symphony Orchestra's March 3 performance of the premiere of "Concerto for Four Soloists" by Indian composer Zakir Hussain was an exciting delight; we who attended applauded until our palms hurt to show our appreciation.
But the March 4 Style review by Anne Midgette ["NSO's 'Maximum' convergence"] dismissed audience reaction with a few words ("they ate it up") as she went on with paragraph after paragraph that missed the magic that occurred.

The extremely negative Feb. 21 Style critique of the Virginia Opera by music critic Joe Banno ["Virginia Opera's Wagnerian shortcoming"] certainly could lead unfamiliar readers to assume that this is some third-rate opera company.
The Virginia Opera has consistently offered for years first-class vocal and orchestral productions in the Washington area.
