The union workers did not gather 'uneasily'

Friday, March 11, 2011; 6:38 PM

I attended the Feb. 28 legislative conference sponsored by the National Treasury Employees Union, and I was surprised the next day to read the headline "Federal workers union gathers uneasily for meeting" on the Federal Worker page [Metro, March 1].

What I saw at the event was a strong, proud and committed group of civil servants willing and able to describe their work and how it helps the American public. These workers understand quite well that some politicians are demonizing the federal workforce to promote certain agendas or to turn attention toward the federal budget instead of jobs and the economy. There was no sense of uneasiness at the gathering, and describing it in those terms was not accurate.
