Charlie Powell, 79, a pharmacist for 40 years who operated Powell Pharmacy in Columbia, died Feb. 21 of pancreatic cancer at the Vantage House retirement community in Columbia.
Mr. Powell moved to Columbia in 1971 and later opened his pharmacy, which he ran for 25 years before retiring in the mid-1990s.
Charles Arthur Powell was born in Havana, Kan. He received a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Kansas in 1954 and a master's degree in pastoral counseling from Maryland's Loyola University in 1988.
He served in the Army from 1955 to 1959.
In 1961, Mr. Powell opened a pharmacy in Independence, Kan., which he operated for 10 years.
Mr. Powell, long interested in psychology, was a member of the Jung Society of Washington. He studied Jungian psychology in Switzerland during the summers from 1982 to 1990.
He was also a skilled abstract painter whose work was displayed at TAG Galleries in Baltimore.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Nan Charles Powell of Columbia; four children, Michael Powell of St. Louis, Mark Powell of Florence, Italy, Brad Powell of Lake Tahoe, Nev., and Julianne Frazier of Columbia; and seven grandchildren.
