What's right should decide votes

Maryland Del. Tiffany T. Alston (D-Prince George's) explained her changed position on same-sex marriage by saying that voting for what she knows to be right against the wishes of some of her constituents is "not my function here" ["Md. delegate explains her quandary," Metro, March 11].

On the contrary. That is precisely her function as an elected representative. Otherwise, we could dispense with politicians and simply set policy by public opinion polls.
