Regarding the March 11 front-page article "Teen suspended from school over acne drug":

There is no doubt that any society needs rules to facilitate good order. But what this story showed is that sometimes the enforcement of rules runs amok and can be counter to common sense. When a "drug" is found in a student's possession, school authorities need to determine whether it was a mistake, a lapse in judgment by the student (or parent), or a matter of intent on the student's part to dispense or sell the substance to others. That should be the bottom line, and it should not take weeks to determine the answer.
