SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq -- The mayor of a town in Iraq's Kurdish self-ruled region says one policeman was fatally shot and ten others wounded during a demonstration.

Goran Adiham says that about 250 young people gathered for a rally Tuesday in the town of Halabja, 43 miles (70 kilometers) east of Sulaimaniyah, the provincial capital.

He said the demonstrators threw stones at police, who tried to disperse them using sticks.

The mayor said he did not know who shot the police officer. The other officers were wounded by sticks and rocks.

Kurds in northern Iraq have been protesting almost daily, calling for political and economic reforms.
