NEW ORLEANS -- A Houston company is helping the Coast Guard clean up oil on the shores of Louisiana even though the company denies responsibility for the slick.

Anglo-Suisse Offshore Partners said Wednesday it was surprised to learn that the Coast Guard believes the oil spill originated from one of its non-producing wells in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company says it was in the process of plugging and abandoning the well when it reported a discharge of less than five gallons to the Coast Guard on Friday. The company says the well was shut in Wednesday morning and can't flow any more.

Between a quarter- and half-mile of coast line has had patches of oil. The Coast Guard said preliminary tests suggest a possible match with oil from the company's well.
