TORONTO -- Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is unlikely to attend the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in London next month because of a looming election in Canada.

A senior government official said Thursday that Harper's participation is unlikely. Just two weeks ago Harper and his wife, Laureen, formally accepted the invitation to attend the Westminster Abbey ceremony on April 29, but opposition parties are set to topple Harper's Conservative government on Friday.

The election date is expected to be May 2.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak about it publicly.

The royal couple accepted an invitation from Harper to visit Canada this summer, making it their first official trip as a married couple.
