EL VENDRELL, Spain -- Portuguese rider Manuel Cardoso won the fourth stage of the Volta of Catalunya on Thursday, while Alberto Contador retained the leader's jersey on the same day that cycling's governing body decided to appeal his doping acquittal.
Cardoso, of RadioShack, edged in front of a pack to claim the 121-mile ride from La Seu D'Urgell to El Vendrell in northeastern Spain in a time of 4 hours, 33 minutes and 2 seconds.
Contador finished out of the top 10 but remained in first place overall at 17 hours, 38 minutes and 34 seconds.
After crossing the finish line, the three-time Tour de France winner said he would fight to prove his innocence at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
