Coach Mike Shanahan said he had a good meeting with Pro Bowler Albert Haynesworth on Wednesday morning, but the Redskins' top football official wouldn't commit to Haynesworth remaining on the roster for the entire season. While meeting with reporters at Redskins Park, Shanahan revealed that he spoke with Haynesworth and "was very pleased with his mindset and where he was coming from." Washington begins training camp Thursday and Haynesworth plans to join the team for its first practice. But Haynesworth, who skipped the Redskins' only mandatory minicamp and most of Shanahan's first offseason program in a dispute over which position he will play, still has much to prove to the coaching staff and his teammates. **Cornerback Carlos Rogers confirmed via text message that he will sign his one-year, $1.54 million tender offer and practice Thursday. "Well, we'll see," Shanahan said. "All I can do is tell you that we're going to give him every opportunity to show us what he can do. Hopefully, he'll like the position that we play him in and give us everything that's he's got." In June, the two-time all-pro requested a trade, in part, because he did not want to play nose tackle in the team's new 3-4 scheme. Although Haynesworth, who will earn a salary of $3.6 million this season, likely will play the nose at times, he also will be used at defensive end, team sources said. Veteran nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu, a starting-caliber player when healthy, is recovering well from an Achilles' injury that sidelined him the entire 2009 season. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and key defensive veterans have been communicating with Haynesworth for weeks. Haynesworth has assured them he will not be a distraction, is in shape and is ready to return to work. "It's easy to talk the game, but we'll see what he does in practice and see what type of shape he's in and how committed he is and all the things we've talked about over the last couple of months," Shanahan said. "But he's here, he's ready to go, he looks in good shape and so we'll get a chance to find out here very quickly." With Haynesworth far behind his teammates in learning the new scheme, he will not start training camp with the first-team defense. "Since he had not been part of our offseason program, there's a conditioning test he'll go through. And if he passes that conditioning test then he'll work out with our team right away. If he doesn't, we'll make sure he's in shape before he works out with the team." In text messages to a reporter Wednesday, several Redskins veterans said they plan to welcome Haynesworth back. Linebacker London Fletcher was among the players who harshly criticized Haynesworth for missing the mandatory minicamp. "I think all our players are very consistent with their feelings," Shanahan said. "They're hoping Albert is in great shape, and [he] buys into his responsibility and he plays like heck and he helps our football team win. Our players would accept that. But he's going to have to buy in and play it the way we want it to be played. And if he does, then he could help us win." In other developments, the Redskins are hopeful that first-round pick Trent Williams will sign soon. The fourth overall pick in the draft, Williams is listed as the starter at left tackle. The man charged with protecting quarterback Donovan McNabb's blind side is considered a gifted athlete, but he's a rookie and has a lot to learn. "I don't think it's unusual for guys not to be signed yet," Shanahan said. "Our organization is very fair. We've been very fair to draft choices. There's always that market value that people are tying to figure out at this time and I would be surprised if he misses any length of time. But the quicker he gets in, the better off it's going to be for all of us." Although defensive lineman Jeremy Jarmon (knee) and safety LaRon Landry (toe) are coming off surgery, both are expected to participate in practice Thursday. Cornerback Carlos Rogers still has not signed his one-year tender offer "but I'll bet you he signs it," Shanahan said. The Redskins still have an offer on the table to free-agent running back Brian Westbrook. "I don't believe the door has closed on Westbrook," Shanahan said. "We talked about that third-down back, a very talented back, but no. The door has not closed." Beginning Thursday, the Redskins' charitable foundation will launch its "Stuff a Backpack" school supply drive. The team is seeking donations of new school supplies to help families prepare for the new school year. The drive, which runs through Aug. 7, will be held at Redskins Park during training camp practice sessions open to the public. The supplies sought include unsharpened No. 2 pencils, pencil sharpeners, colored pencils, pens, highlighters, erasers, rulers, glue sticks, notebook filler paper, spiral notebooks, three-ring binders and crayons. Fans unable to attend practices or those who would prefer to contribute financially can do so. For more information, contact Jordana Taylor of the team's charitable foundation at (703) 726-7497.
