Medicare: By the Numbers
1. QUALITY RANKINGS: Based on 24 basic measures of care from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Office of Clinical Standards for Quality, including the percentage of hospitals that give heart attack patients aspirin and Beta Blockers within 24 hours of admission. Detailed risk adjustment is not critical because few patients are contraindicated for the 24 procedures. Rankings are by The Post.
2. SPENDING PER BENEFICIARY: Adjusted for age, race and sex; also adjusted for inflation and differences in state price levels. Data for DC and Puerto Rico are not available.
