Four Years of War
Four years after the Iraq invasion, a large U.S. force remains amid sectarian warfare involving Sunni insurgents, many of them allied with the group al-Qaeda in Iraq, and Shiite militiamen, most of them loyal to anti-U.S. cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. About 3,200 U.S. troops have died in the conflict.
