washingtonpost.com: Hey, thanks for joining us today. Lots of interesting questions lined up, so let's jump right to it.

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Hi GOGs! After thoroughly enjoying Restaurant Week last week, I have heard rumors that some restaurants have extended their restaurant week through this weekend. Do you have a list or know of a website where I can find restaurants that have extended restaurant week?
Thanks a lot!
Erin: Here is the rundown of places I know of:
701 - through Aug. 14
Ardeo - Dinner through Sunday
Butterfield 9 - Lunch through tomorrow, dinner through Sunday
Cafe Mozu - Lunch through Saturday, dinner through Sunday
Corduroy - Lunch through tomorrow, dinner through Saturday
Finemondo - Through August
Ortanique - Dinner through Saturday
Oval Room- Lunch through tomorrow, Dinner through Sunday
Oya - Monday-Thursday through August
Also, 1789 offers a $35 special through the end of summer.

Penn Quarter, Washington, D.C.: You all have mentioned cooking classes in previous chats. Are these one-time classes or a series of classes that meet several times. What classes that are metro-accessible do you recommend?
Thanks and keep up the great work!
Erin: It varies. TasteDC offers single day classes. If you're looking to take a series of classes, check with local continuing education schools (particularly in Arlington) or you can consult last year's list from the Post's Food section. Keep an eye out for this year's list coming soon.

Alexandria, Va.: Do you know of any good (and free) outdoor movies/concerts/events this weekend?
Jen: Not sure if this is too far of a hike from Alexandria, but the Outdoor Film Festival at Strathmore kicks off tomorrow night. Movies are free, under the stars, and Metro-accessible (via the Grosvenor station) through Aug. 21. This weekend's features are "Shrek 2" on Friday, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" on Saturday and "West Side Story" on Sunday. There are several food vendors on site, too, so it's nice and easy to have a picnic before the film starts.

Downtown Washington, D.C.: Hey GOGs,
A few ladyfriends and I were planning to check out Avenue tomorrow night, but heard a rumor that it's 23+. Any truth to that? Couldn't find anything on the web or reach anyone at the club.
Fritz: I just wrote about the club two or three weeks ago, and no one mentioned that -- and the free passes for tomorrow night (get yours at madpowerunit.com) say "21 and over."

Reston, VA: Do you guys ever get a chance to come out the burbs? I just moved to Reston and would like your viewpoints on some of the better establishments in this area. What would be your picks? I can't seem to find a decent bar/lounge/dance club around here.
Fritz: Well, Reston, I do get out to Reston/Herndon/Vienna, and honestly, I haven't been blown away by too many places. The ones in the town center are pretty much chains with an okay bar (i.e. Clyde's). There's Champps Americana for sports viewing, of course, and a decent happy hour.
Herndon has two I like, the comfortable neighborhood spot Jimmy's Old Town Tavern (dancing on the weekend, but it's not all that) and Carpool, which has a nice patio, numerous pool tables, fine beers and a good crowd.

DC: I've been trying to find a way to get my girlfriend to dump me as I'd feel too guilty if I ended things myself. She's very traditional prim and proper type. Could getting her to go see "The Aristocrats" with me do the trick?
Jen: Yes. If she's that prim and proper, she'll never speak to you again if you take her to see that movie. To make the situation as bad as possible, tell her "The Aristocrats" is a Jane Austen-esque love story/period piece set in Wales. Then she'll really be caught off-guard.
If for some reason the plan backfires and she still doesn't dump you, there's always the patented, George Kostanza "It's Not You It's Me" routine.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Help! My husband's birthday is this Sunday and my parents are coming in from NYC this weekend. They got a hotel in the Tyson's corner area. Any recommendations for restuarants near the mall preferably Asian (Filipino/Chinese/Malaysian) or American food. Thanks!
Erin: How about Busara , Infusion , Tachibana and, if you trek a bit, Blue Iguana for some nice Indonesian?
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: What's the vibe like at IOTA? Could I take my 16yo sister there?
David: The vibe at Iota is wonderful -- laidback, unpretentious, the perfect cross between a neighborhood bar and a quality music club. I have a higher percentage of "show enjoyment" there than at any other area venue, I'd say. Unfortunately, your 16 year old sister will have to wait 5 years to enjoy it, as it's strictly 21+. That said, they do have the occasional all-ages Sunday matinee, which would be a perfect time to take her to check it out. The next one is next Sunday with Last Train Home.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Have you guys ever eaten in the bar at Kinkead's? It's my last Saturday night in DC and my BF and I would like to eat somewhere that is very DCesque. I know that going to one place is basically impossible to cover the wide cultural range this place embraces. But, I've actually done alot of ethnic place and not many of the DC politico places. Also thinking about the Osteria del Galileo.
Erin: I haven't eaten at the bar at Kinkead's, but you can certainly get the full menu there. I think that Galileo is a littly over-hyped myself. Are you looking to stay in that Foggy Bottom-ish vicinity? If you eat meat, Prime Rib is a Washington, D.C. establishment and near Kinkead's.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: The girls and I are headed out for a night on the town on Friday night and are looking for somewhere to go with a fairly low-key, friendly, open, laid-back vibe and plenty of opportunities to chat up some mid-20's to mid-30's guys. Where can we go (in DC or Arlington)?
Thanks!
Rhome: Immediate suggestions in Arlington would be Gua-Rapo , Eleventh Street and Continental . Heading into DC, there's the oft-debated but always jumping Wonderland . Or you could make a night of bar-hopping along Barracks Row .
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: I saw a new science museum downtown, can you give me the background and maybe whether it's worth visiting?
Fritz: You're thinking of the Koshland Museum at the National Academy of Arts and Sciences. It's not really an over-the-top experience like the Science Museum in Baltimore, but it's not a staid center full of displays in glass cases. Instead, there are interactive displays (computers, films, games) about how science is used to catch criminals, and global warming. It's worth a visit, whether you have kids with an interest in science or you're just a novice like me.

Washington, D.C.: Friend in town this weekend and thinking of trying a new brunch spot. I always seem to end up at the same spots. Thinking about Tabard Inn...thoughts? The doughnuts sound fantastic. Anyone have any menu favorties that I should try?
Erin: Tabard Inn is a great brunch pick. They do everything well there (waffles, oysters and quiche). To throw out a few more options, Colorado Kitchen has amazing donuts and Cashion's Eat Place is a rockstar at brunch.

What to do with 2 1/2 year old?: Hi Gurus,
We're new to the area and the East in general, and live in Arlington. Can you (or anyone out there) offer any suggestions for what to do with a 2 1/2 year old boy in the area? It's looking like it'll be a little warm to do too much outside with the kids (we also have a 5 month old girl as well). We've done the some of the museums in the Mall, the DC Ducks, and the zoo so far. He's a big fan of trains, if there are any train related activities around. Thanks!
Jen: My nephew was in town recently and he's a huge train buff as well. He's 5, so he's a little older. You could take him to the America on the Move exhibit at the Museum of American History , which includes trains and other vehicles that may intrigue him. If you don't mind venturing to Montgomery County, he might like the National Capital Trolley Museum . Also, both Cabin John Regional Park (near Montgomery Mall in Bethesda/Potomac) and Wheaton Regional Park have miniature train rides, which he would probably love. (Wheaton has a carousel as well). There may be other miniature trains closer to Arlington, but those are the ones I definitely know. Hope this helps.

Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus: Any suggestions on places in Cap Hill for beers before or after Nats games? Hopefully fun, cheap, and close to the Eastern Market or Potomac Ave. Metro stops. Thanks!
Fritz: Potomac Ave: Your only real choice is Trusty's (thankfully, there are $2.50 beers until 8). It's a cozy little dive with a glossy, automotive-inspired sheen.
Eastern Market: Tunnicliff's offers $2 beers before and after all home games, but I prefer the atmosphere (and the pints) at Finn Mac Cool's or the Ugly Mug.
There's an interactive map of pre and post-game bars
here
.

Columbia Heights, Washington, D.C.: My friend from NYC is in town this weekend, and we're looking to reminisce on our days in New York with an old-school night of cheap beer, music and pinball. I've noticed good pinball machines and good jukeboxes are hard to come by these days. Any recommendations that have both in D.C.?
Fritz: My top two would be Asylum and the Black Cat. Both rotate their games pretty often (or used to) and have cheap beer, too.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Fritz/All, what's Politiki like on a Thursday evening? Anyone other than stuffy staffers there to take advantage of the $1 Bud/Bud light bottles?
Fritz: Interns! Actually, I was there doing "research" a few weeks ago and there was a pretty lively crowd, not all of whom were (a) 21 or (b) wearing laminated badges around their necks.

NW Washington, D.C.: Hey GOGS. Love the chats!!! I'm really hoping you'll find it in your collective heart to answer my question. My wife and I are headed to Hairspray this weekend and we were thinking of dining at Merkado beforehand. We've heard some mixed reviews from friends, but I'm curious what you guys think. Should we try it or not?
Erin: Yum, I love Merkado. Experiences obviously differ (due to somewhat iffy service), but they have some excellent menu options (including pre-theater) and cocktails. (Note to the person seeking a good Bloody Mary -- they have some great takes on the bev. at Sunday brunch.) Now you've got me thinking about Calamari linguine.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Everyone:
Wanted to get your expert opinion on a local music fest this weekend...
I was thinking of hitting the Fort Hunt Festival this Saturday -- I heard that the line-up includes several local bands. Can you tell me more about this Festival...if it's worth the price of admission?
Thanks so much!
G.
David: The price of admission for the festival at Fort Hunt Park on Saturday seems a bit steep at $20. That said, it seems there will be beer and wine on the house included in that price. As for the bands, why don't you check some of them out on our MP3 site? No Second Troy , Wes Tucker , and Broken Tailight all have songs you can listen to. No Second Troy have a pretty big buzz around town right now, they have a rather tuneful, streamlined rock sound that could translate into big success if they get a break. Let us know how it is if you go.
_______________________
Washington DC: I could use a cold mixed drink today after work. Any suggestions for the Dupont area?
Fritz: At happy hour, I'd hit Topaz or Rouge. Both have great happy hour cocktails ($5) and solid bartenders. If you're not looking for deals, it's the Town and Country Lounge at the Mayflower (Sam is a legend).
_______________________
Elkridge, Md.: My friend is a HUGE Kiefer Sutherland fan and has heard through the grapevine that he's been in town shooting a movie. Any clue where we could catch him in the act? And any possibility that Mr Sutherland has been hanging out in any of the local bars? We're heading down to D.C. on Friday night and thought we'd try our luck!
Thanks!
Jen: Kiefer is in the Michael Douglas movie, "The Sentinel," which had been filming on the Mall a week or so ago. I'm not sure if the crew is still in town; if someone else knows, please chime in.
It's quite possible you'd be wasting the trip if he's already gone. But if you're really set on trying to track him down, I'd suggest hanging out near the hotels where the rich-and-famous usually stay (the Ritz-Carlton and the Four Seasons in Georgetown or the Mandarin Oriental). You could also try Cafe Milano, since that seems like a mandatory stop for a lot of celebs. Kiefer strikes me as someone who might go somewhere a bit more down-to-earth, though, so I don't know. Frankly, it's all a bit of a guessing game. If I could read Kiefer Sutherland's mind, I'd definitely tell you where he would be ... and I'd also tell you what's going to happen on the next season of "24."

Single in D.C.: Is it ever acceptable for a late '20s gal to go out alone on a Saturday night? I mean, I'm sure it is, but where?!?!?!
Ideally, I'd like to meet a few people, but am always too shy to make the first move.
What's a girl to do?!
Rhome: It's 2005. You're a grown woman. Of course it's acceptable for you to go out alone.
First of all, limit your choices to places where you can get there and back safely. No long walks in areas without people around, make sure there's parking or a Metro stop in close proximity, etc. Had to get the practical issues out of the way first.
Second, if your shyness persists, you could put yourself in the most social situations but still end up disappointed if you're always waiting for someone else to take the initiative. You'll have to make a step forward to prime the social pump.
Now, the best thing for you is to go to places where people talk a lot. Simply talking to your bartender can work wonders as they will often facilitate some social engineering among the customers. The result - new friends for everyone. Try Galaxy Hut, Tonic, Soussi, Aroma and Wonderland. If you hit that last one this Saturday, you're bound to have a good time
here
. Even a shy person can't help but meet people as long as you at least try to jump in to the dancing frey. If you're alone though, you might want to take a cab.

Washington, D.C.: What is the most romantic restaurant in D.C.?
Erin: Well, I like 1789 , but Little Fountain Cafe , Le Paradou and Marcel's are contenders in D.C.
_______________________
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: My mom is coming in town this weekend and she loves to shop. While I definitely share her love, my bank account doesn't...and so I don't have much experience shopping in DC. She loves funky boutiques (think SoHo) -- what's the best area to take her to on Saturday afternoon? Thanks!
Janet: I'd take her to the U Street corridor. Funky boutiques there include Wild Women Wear Red (shoes), Nana (vintage and new women's clothing)and Home Rule and Go Mama Go! for quirky home accessories. Enjoy the day.

Alexandria, Va.: Hello All,
My girlfriend and I are celebrating our one-year anniversary together on Sunday. We're going to have dinner at La Loma (where we had our first date) and then travel over to catch some music at Mr. Smith's in Georgetown. Now, we've agreed that the most we can spend on a gift for each other is $10. I'm struggling trying to find something that's special, but stays under the limit. Any ideas?
Janet: It kind of depends on what she likes. If she's the kind of girl who likes chocolate (and I seriously question one who doesn't), I'd buy her the best I could find for $10 -- even if it's only one or two pieces.

Centreville, VA: Gurus --
I'd love to see The Aristocrats, but I don't want to travel all of the way to the city to do so. Will it be playing anywhere in NoVA?
Thanks in advance.
Jen: " The Aristocrats " opens tomorrow and is only playing at Landmark's E Street Cinema. It's possible that if it does well, it may expand. Of course, AMC has refused to book it and NoVa has numerous AMC theaters, so you may be waiting a while. Personally, I say make a day out of coming to D.C. -- go to some museums, have a nice lunch, then see "The Aristocrats." Even if you don't like the movie, it still wouldn't be time wasted.

Anonymous: Have you heard anything about the three new restaurants on U Street? I think they are called Creme, Tabaq, and...I can't remember the third one.
Erin: The third one is Al Crostino. Here are our first impressions.
_______________________
Filipino restaurants near Tyson's: As a Filipino-American that grew up in McLean, I had to reply to this post... I don't know of any Filipino restaurants right by the mall, but I have seen a sign for one in Falls Church on Lee Hwy. From Rte. 7, head west on 29/Lee Hwy and look for the "Filipino Appetizers" sign on your left after about a 1/2 mile or so. Never been there so I couldn't tell you what to expect. For a specific place that I do know of, you'd need to head down to Arlington to Little Quiapo. (Divey but good food.) Also Springfield has several restaurants but I can't remember any specific names.
Erin: Nice. I'll have to try Little Quiapo.

Logan Circle, Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,
Are there any neighborhood Irish bars/pubs within the Disrict that have a decent jukebox (Flogging Molly a must!), good stout, and a fun laidback crowd? Something like Fado, but less commercial. Thanks for making DC a fun place to live!
Fritz: One word: Nanny's. (At least, I think I've heard Flogging Molly there. If not, it's the most likely spot.) Great staff and owners, terrific pints.

Silver Spring, Md.: I'm a desperate girl that's been trying to find a pair of designer jeans for what seems like forever. The main problem is I have athletic thighs from years of squats, hurdles and soccer. My rate limiting step is finding jeans that my legs will fit into comfortably w/o huge gaps at the waist. Supposedly AG Jeans makes a jean for ladies with actual curves, but I have yet to find anyone in the area who has them. Nordstroms carries AG Jeans but doesn't carry the "Legend" jean they only carry the skinny thigh jeans (b/c I guess only skinny legged people deserve designer jeans right?).
Please help! I'm also willing to try other brands that athletic legged ladies have found to fit well. Lucky Brand Jeans are OK but I have an entire closet full and would like to branch out into something a bit different.
Janet: They're not designer, but did you know that the Gap has recently come out with a style of jeans meant for women with curves? I haven't checked them out yet, but they would be worth a look. Another option (much more expensive) is to see how Cambio jeans might fit you. Finally, Mauro Farinelli at Denim Bar on Pentagon Row is the jean meister in town; give him a call or make a trip over there.
_______________________
Washington, DC: What do you know about art/music/plays at the Warehouse Theater? Are they generally worth seeing? One of my friends wants to see a film series there, but I'd never heard of it!;
David: Yeah, you could argue that the whole point of the Warehouse is to showcase stuff that folks have never heard of. Sometimes it'll be really great, other times not so great, but almost always different, which scores points in my book. So check it out, by all means.

Arlington, Va.: Hello!
My b-day is quickly approaching! It's going to be a long day at work though, and I would love to indulge (post work-out, of course!) in a decadent chocolate dessert that evening.
Any thoughts on the best dessert or dessert spot in nova/dc (preferably low or moderately priced)? Gracias!
Erin: This could be one for the peanut gallery, but I love the molton Godiva cake at Morton's .
_______________________
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: With my million nieces and nephews, I am always in need of cute kid presents. I'd love to hear your recommendations for some great kid stores (preferrably in DC) that sell toys & games for the elementary & preschool crowd. Thanks in advance! (Love your blog, by the way).
Janet: There's Sullivan's in D.C. on Wisconsin and there's another store in Foxhall Mall on New Mexico Avenue that I can't think of the name of right now. Why Not? is a super kids store in Alexandria that specializes in toys and games and Whirligigs and Whimsies in Bethesda on Old Georgetown Road is also a good place to try for games and such for the pre-school crowd.

Rockville, Md.: Dear Gurus:
My five year old daughter and I are getting together with my girlfriend and her dog next week around Q Street, DC, noonish. We'll spending the rest of the day together and are very open to suggestions as long as they don't involve much driving around. Given the recent weather, we would probably to spend most of our time indoor. Thanks.
Anne: I'm going to guess you mean Q Street in Dupont, so let me know if not. I'm sure you'll be heading to SweetLicks a lot. That's the only place nearby I can think of where dogs will be welcomed in. I'm also a fan of Afterwords Cafe 's family-size sundaes meant for sharing. The Phillips Collection is free for anyone under 18, an even better reason to introduce your daughter to Hiroshige's woodblock prints.
_______________________
Arlington VA: I understand that "The Warrior", which won the BAFTA a couple of years back, is scheduled to screen in DC sometime soon. But getting in touch with distributor Miramax is next to impossible. Anybody have the skinny on when and where the film will play here?
Jen: I feel like I heard something about this recently, but my brain can't seem to pull the info. I've put in a call to someone who handles publicity for Miramax. If I hear back before the chat ends, I'll post the details.
_______________________
Bar at Kinkead's: That is the only place we ever eat there because you can just drop in and get a meal without reservations, and it is great. The bartenders are really wonderful, and yes, you can order from the whole menu.
Erin: Got that people?
_______________________
Crofton, MD: Hot day like today makes me think of a cold beer. Loved Abita Amber when I was in New Orleans. Any place you can buy it locally?
Fritz: I see Abita Amber all the time on draft and in bottles around D.C. (Maybe Crazy Otto's and Rafters don't stock it?) If you're in Crofton, I'd try Rips on 301.

Soon To Be U Street: Hi Gurus,
At the end of the month, a friend and I will be moving into an apartment in the U Street area. You've given us plenty of good going out advice for the area, but I guess this is more of a staying in question. We're looking for a relatively cheap home furnishings store in the District to start decorating our new home. Can you make any suggestions (other than Ikea, please) to help us decorate on a budget? Perhaps somewhere carrying used furniture? Thanks so much!
Janet: A couple of suggestions for relatively cheap home furnishings: Reincarnations, Goodwood, Ruff 'n Ready (check the hours because they're odd) and Miss Pixie's. Both Ruff 'n Ready and Miss Pixie's carry furniture bought at auctions and estate sales.
_______________________
Arlington, Va.: I remember reading in the Sunday Source about a place in Maryland that has the best pies. What is the name of that place? Or, where else can i get some excellent pie by the slice? I have a hankerin'. thanks
Erin: Well, the place that pops into my mind is Dangerously Delicious Pies in Baltimore. You can snag one locally at Dean and Deluca. Here is a recent Food section article. Here is another delicious read that could help you on your way! One of the stands at the Sunday Dupont Circle farmers market sells seasonal large and mini pies. Yum.

Washington, D.C.: To the single girl looking to go out by herself - from one singleton to another I recommend going to dinner by yourself at an interesting restaurant and sitting at the bar (I had a great time at Firefly and Sushi Taro in Dupont Circle). You can usually get great dinner conversation that way and often an invite to go out with fellow diners. I've also had lots of luck going to shows by myself at Black Cat and 9:30 Club - you can find cabs easily and being single often attracts more men than if you were in a group of girlfriends. Good Luck!
Fritz: Good advice. Thanks.
_______________________
Arlington, Va.: I'm sure you've answered this before, but I can't find it in the transcripts - what's a good place to get a (preferably inexpensive, but "good" is more important) bikini wax in Arlington?
Janet: There's Natural Body Day Spa, for one. Also, there's an Aveda in Pentagon City.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Any insider info on the Montgomery County Fair going on this weekend and next? I grew up going to the Ohio State Fair and miss the annual butter sculpture contest, cotton candy and ferris wheel. Will I be able to get my fill?
David: Cotton candy and ferris wheel, definitely. Butter sculpture? Not so sure about that. The fair Web site is quite informative and should tell you everything you need to know. I think I'll be heading out there this weekend for some pig races and maybe even next weekend for the Demolition Derby. I have fun there every year, I'm sure you will too.

Keifer: I read an article that Keifer Sutherland has already been to Cafe Milano, Chadwicks, and Ozio.
Jen: I also read that he stopped by McFadden's.
I'm kind of thinking he's left town by now since he was spotted a couple of weeks ago. I could be wrong, though.
The question is: Does knowing where he's already been help figure out where he'll be next? Would he go back to, say, Cafe Milano if he's already been there?
Things that make you go hmmm...
_______________________
Falls Church, VA: I recently moved to Falls Church from the land-locked midwest and want to buy a boat and get on the water ASAP. First things first, though...Where can I take adult sailing lessons in the immediate area?
Janet: There may be other places, but the only one I know is in Annapolis at the Annapolis Sailing School on 601 South Sixth Street, 800-638-9192. May the wind be with you.
_______________________
Seattle, WA: Hey Gurus!;
I live in the "other" Washington, but I'm coming out there later this month to spend the weekend with my special someone for his birthday. Would you happen to have any suggestions for a restaurant SO incredible, that it would impress even the most out-going DC native?
Erin: Is The Inn at Little Washington too cliche? Maestro and Restaurant Eve are special restaurants. You could do a weekend at the White Pig B and B near Charlottesville.
_______________________
Dupont: I've been reading these chats religiously ever since I decided to move into Dupont from Arlington in May. Its been a great way for me to become familiar with the city.
Now that I've moved in (two weeks ago) I need to find a shop where I can get my Soccer gear (jerseys, scarfs, etc). Fritz, any recommendations? i still have a car so it doesn't need to be metro accessible. Thanks.
Fritz: I really buy most of my stuff online these days. Are you looking for generic apparel or team-specific uniforms? For the former, I like the Adidas outlet in College Park. (It's known as Three Stripe for legal reason, I'm told.) For the latter, there are shops in Kensington that I've been to, and I've heard good things about Godek Rugby and Soccer, which is on Gallows Road in Vienna.
_______________________
Alexandria, Va.: Can you offer examples of places to go around DC and Arlington for the 20-something crowd that aren't bars or clubs? Those are fun, but sometimes I just want to go hang out somewhere without all the smoke and alcohol. I figure that there have to be places that cater to that niche around here, right?
Rhome: There are a number of smoke-free nightlife options but it would be difficult to break down the whole universe of non-bar/club options without a little more of an idea of what you're looking for. Maybe you should try a Nats or DC United game. Hit up some museums and galleries. Bethesda Art Walk is tomorrow, although that might be a haul for you, but similar events happen in the galleries downtown, in Georgetown and in Dupont .
_______________________
Haircut for guy: Where can I send my boyfriend for a good haircut (in Arlington or D.C.)? He's hesitant to go to a "salon" but I'm looking for something better than your average barber or Hair Cuttery. Thanks!
Janet: Guys around here like Demian, which is in Adams-Morgan on 2427 18th St. NW.
_______________________
Kinkeads no: Please not the bar at Kinkeads. It has no atmosphere and for my money very little food or personality. Why not the Grille? Hotel Washington? Oysters at Old Ebbitt for that last DC experience? Which is kind of impossible as well. Take a picnic to the other side of the Potomac and just watch the city. But not Kinkeads.
Fritz: Oysters at Old Ebbit are a great way to spend a night in D.C., especially if you're there for happy hour. A friend and I were at the back bar the other night. I wanted crab claws, she wanted oysters. We agreed to share. After one of the Prince Island oysters, I regretted my decision immensely.
Great old atmosphere though -- brass, dark wood, hunting pictures -- and very Washington, I think.

Crofton MD: Fritz -- You've been to Crazy Otto's?? If I had known that I would have bought you a beer (but not an Abita Amber!;)
Fritz: And Rafters, too. I get around.
_______________________
American U, DC: Hi Gurus!; Have you heard anything about the happy hour rooftop parties at the Hilton Embassy Row? Would love some info if you have any...Thanks!;
Fritz: All the info you need is here .
_______________________
Aristocrats, DC: It is also playing at Lowes Georgetown!; A good alternative for the person in NoVa who doesn't want to go deep into the city.
Jen: Hey, you're right. For some reason I thought it was an exclusive at Landmark E Street, but that's not true. It's also at Georgetown and the Muvico Egyptian at Arundel Mills. And it opens at the Landmark Bethesda Aug. 19. Of course, none of those are in Virginia, but Georgetown might be easier than E Street.
And, like I said, it may come to Va. next Friday.
Thanks for correcting me on this ... my brain is clearly not working today.

Curious?: I've heard rumors of a "lifestyle" club on U street. Is there any truth to it.
Fritz: Yes. Saturdays at Bar Nun. Ladies are admitted free. Men can't get in unless accompanied by a woman.

Hooray!;: I just got my first apartment, so its time to get some furniture...but on a major budget. Where do you suggest I trek to check things out? Things must be metro accessible--I'll rent a truck for the actual moving.
Janet: Reincarnations, Ikea in College Park (I think there's a Metro stop near), Ruff 'n Ready. You may also want to check the paper for estate sales that will start happening in early fall. If you can wait that long.

Alexandria: For a miniature train (slightly) closer to Alexandria, try Burke Lake park in Burke, VA. I loved the train ride there as a kid. It used to be 50 cents per ride for kids and adults, but it's probably gone up a little in the past 20 years... They also have a great carousel, ice cream parlor and playgrounds there.
Jen: That sounds perfect. Thanks, Alexandria.

Petworth: Oh, also for the person looking for kid stuff- Some of the biggest hit presents for kids I've found not at the toy store, but in museum shops. Especially recommended: Building Museum, Hirshhorn, National Gallery, Air and Space, American History and Natural History
Janet: Great idea. I forgot that option. Thanks.

Columbia Heights, DC: What should a Wonderland/Mark Cafe woman wear or
expect at the 1223 Friday night happy hour?
Thanks much
Rhome: Fashionable attire. The stuff that you'd generally dry clean.
This is harder for women than men though, because ladies have so much more leeway than dudes.
No tight black slacks with a little handkerchief top though. Please, I'm appealing to all of you to let that go.

College Park, Md.: Had to submit early, have a meeting during the afternoon. I recently moved to the area and was looking for good bars/clubs. My friend took me out to the Black Cat which I really liked. Anything else similar to that you could recommend (preferably Metro accessible)?
David: Well, without discovering a new Metro stop you can try Velvet Lounge , DC9 and Cafe Saint-Ex . The first two offer the same part-bar/part-live music as the Black Cat.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Hi GOGs. After three years of law school (voluminous reading of small print) I think my once-perfect eyesight may have taken a wee turn for the worse. I am looking to get my eyes checked and should I need them, a snazzy pair of specs. Nothing too wild and crazy, rather something very fashionable. I won't say that money is no object, but I am willing to spend a little for something I will be happy with. Could you recommend any stylish and good-quality eyewear shops, preferably in DC? Thanks.
Janet: Thankfully, the search for a good-looking pair of glasses is not the treasure hunt it once was. However, some of the places that offer the snazziest specs are also the most expensive, such as Blink and Georgetown Optical, which both have a great selection. But by all means, try the discount options -- Hour Eyes, etc. -- too.

Arlington, Va.: Help! My girlfriend (transplanted Rhode Island'er) is planning a bachelorette party in DC. She has the day planned (limo wine tour) but needs some help for Sat nite. It's a small group (10 girls, all from New England) and while I suggested Zataynia for dinner, I'm worried with the fact that they don't take reservations. Afterwards, I told her to head up to Adams Morgan, but beyond the Reef and maybe Madam's Organ, not sure where to send them for a good time. They want (then again, what guy can ever say he truly knows what women want) casual bar, not up scale, wait in line, bars. Suggestions, O' Mighty Ones?
Fritz: We'd worry, too. If you want to do Zaytinya, you should get there on the early side, or be prepared to wait -- especially with a large group. If you want to stick in that area, Rosa Mexicano would work for such a group.
And on a Saturday night, I'd waver about the Reef. The lines were pretty bad last Saturday, and it was packed inside. Tom Tom, too. I'd try someplace like Dan's, where they can mix their own drinks, Chief Ike's or maybe Soussi. The upstairs lounge at the latter is a cool place to hang, and the bar has a big patio. They could always go dance at Nolan's (the old Crush), which is sticking to the formula of cheesy -- er, "fun" -- dance music and cheap beer.

Washington, D.C.: Help please! My sister (25) is going to be in town this weekend. We're looking for fun things to do Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday morning/early afternoon. Only requirement is that they are free/inexpensive, as we're both broke. I checked the entertainment guide, but wasn't inspired. Any news on festivals, fairs, or anything else happening this weekend? Thanks!
Anne: The Outdoor Film Festival at Strathmore means free movies this weekend, and I recommend the Lego expo this weekend. It's $7 to get in, and if you're in the right mind set, you'll be astounded by the creations. An entire cathedral or battling robots made of legos, for example.

New York, NY: Not a question, but a good find ... I was visiting the area this past weekend and found a cute little boutique in Great Falls called the Pink Martini, very reminiscent of my favorite spots in NYC.
Janet: Thanks. I love the name; will have to check it out. And it's named after one of my favorite groups.

Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: The concert series at Fort Reno Park: yay or nay? I have teenager visitors next week and was thinking that it might be a Monday night option.
David: Yes, certainly, as long as they can deal with somewhat off-kilter rock music. Very good show on Monday, too, with Mary Timony , Medications and The Threads.

Washington D.C.: Here's a tough one for you.
I'm a middle-aged gay man living in D.C., with three kids in their mid-twenties who live in New York City. They'll be visiting ne next weekend with assorted significant others.
Saturday night, I'm going to take the group out to dinner, and I'm trying to think of a place that would be fun for all of us to stop afterward for a drink and maybe some music.
They're perfectly comfortable in gay bars in NY, but there the line between gay and straight doesn't seem so rigidly defined. Here in DC, everything is much more segregated, whether by race, orientation, age, political preference, or something else. I don't think my usual hangouts--Halo, Green Lantern, DIK Bar--would seem particularly welcoming to them.
Any suggestions for a place where some fairly hip New York twenty-somethings and their gay Dad can hang out together?
Fritz: You raise an interesting point. I, as a straight man, have never felt uncomfortable at Halo, for example -- though no one's ever asked if I was gay. (The Lantern, on the other hand, is a different matter.)
I wonder how they'd like Helix, which seems to draw a fairly mixed clientele, and has cool drinks, a mod decor and that awesome patio. Gazuza might work, too, although the attitude that I've seen (and heard about) on occasion can be off-putting. The other Dupont/Logan Kimpton hotel bars (Rouge, Topaz) would be runners up.
Chatters?

Cleveland Park: Fritz - Any word on when the Cleveland Park Bar and Grill is going to open? It would be such a waste of that rooftop if they dont get it open this year. Also is Atomic still having a hard time moving into the Park Bench space?
Fritz: I agree. It's been sold to the owners of Vida, and they said they're working on it (no timetable, though). I wish they'd hurry up.
Atomic is still negotiating with the Park Bench owners about rent and space issues -- and I've heard a rumor that the above-ground space on Ordway is a sticking point, but can't confirm that.

Washington, D.C.: Where can I meet some cute British boys in this city?
Fritz: Mousetrap (next Saturday night at the Black Cat) or watching football at Lucky Bar or Fado this weekend.

Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.: I desperately need your help. I am moving out of town in a week and as a good bye party want to host a karaoke night with a bunch of friends. Do you know of karaoke places that have semi or completely private rooms? I know of Cafe Muse, but are there any in the District, preferably near metro?
Fritz: None in the District, sadly, though if you show up early to Recessions on Friday (7 to midnight) you can probably get a few songs in. It's not as packed as Cafe Japone or Peyote Cafe.

Kid Toys: There is a new hobby/game/toy store on the corner of S. Royal and Prince in Alexandria. I have not been there, but have heard good buzz, and you could check it out and then treat yourself to the Shoe Hive. . .

14th St.: Just a comment. A large group of friends and I celebrated a friend's birthday at Tabaq last night and what had the potential for a great night, left many in my party, most of whom live in the neighborhood, quite turned off. While the surroundings are cool (though no music) and the space seems to have much potential, an overzealous enforcement of the dress policy in their first week of business was completely unnecessary and rudely and unequally enforced (e.g. to a friend in dress shirt and jeans waiting for a friend to leave, "You have to go. The only reason you got in here is because you were with the party.")
As a business owner on 14th Street, I can think of no faster way to turn away potentially great local customers...of course maybe the cool neighborhood folks aren't they're target demographic; that's certainly the impression I was left with, and it's really a disappointment.
Rhome: New places are always a toss-up right when they open up as the kinks are still being worked out. Fritz and Erin see potential there and I had a good experience last night trying the place out when it wasn't packed beyond reason. The service was attentive with some minor lapses.
My friend and I did notice some folks turned away at the door and that seemed odd.
I was rocking an ethnic print shirt, some khaki military pants and black shell-toe Adidas. No one gave me a hard time.
Seems ominous for such an attitude to take root in a restaurant on U Street but we can only watch and see how that develops.

arlington, va: For the person seeking cute kids gifts...
There's a place in Arlington called Kinderhouse. It's at 4510 N. Lee Highway

Great kids books, stuffed animals...there's also a game store in that same strip mall, can't think of what it's called, that has every game ever made!;
Anne: And another...

Petworth: Tree Top Toys is the place on New Mexico Ave. They're great. I have no kids, and lots of nephews and nieces, and while I remember what I liked as a kid, I don't remember what ages go with what things! So, on my own, I'm prone to buying things that the kids are too young for. Anyhow, at Tree Top they have great books and toys and staff who know what stuff is right for what age who are willing to help! I go there every year for all the kids' presents, and love love love them!
Anne: Thanks, Pet.

Wsahington, D.C.: What did you think of Breeze? It definitely is no Air (the first year that is). I was greatly disappointed, left around 12:30 and do not plan to go back. No regrets, though, because I won't have to wonder what the club was like. I could have gone to a bar, not paid a cover charge and hear better music. The best thing about my outing to Breeze was eating at that great Italian restaurant on 19th and M.
Fritz: You know, My views pretty much mirrored yours. It was uncomfortably packed, the music was okay, and I wouldn't pay the $15 they wanted after midnight. It's nice to be outside, but come on -- you're standing in the courtyard of an office building, surrounded by a bank, a vacant office and a hair salon. Not much in the way of atmosphere to make me forget I just paid $6 for an "aluminum bottle" of Bud.

Washington, D.C.: Single in D.C.: Try one of the structured events put on by Professionals in the City (www.prosinthecity.com) or Things To Do DC (www.thingstododc.com). Anne: Good ideas, D.C. Thanks.

Chevy Chase, Washington, D.C.: I have 2 friends coming to visit this weekend from Manhattan and they've requested that we go to an Orioles game. I obliged and bought 4 tickets to the 4:35 game on Saturday. 2 questions: What could we do in Baltimore to kill some time before the game, other than the aquarium? Also, I'd really rather have dinner in D.C. than Baltimore after the game. Is it unreasonable to think that we could make it back here in time? Thanks!
David: You know, Richard Harrington wrote a very nice article in the Weekend section a few weeks back about some of Baltimore's lesser-known attractions, so I'll just direct you there. And you should have no problem getting back to D.C. for dinner. Game should be over by around 7:30, getting you back here by 8:30, maybe 9 if you get stuck in a parking lot while leaving. That's not too late to eat on a Saturday, is it? The way the O's are playing, you'll probably want to leave early anyway.

Washington, D.C.: Is the Air & Space Museum out by Dulles open on Sundays? If so how do you travel there if you don't have a car? Is there a metro, bus, shuttle?
Anne: The Udvar-Hazy Center is open every day. For those without a car, there's a shuttle from the National Air and Space Museum on the Mall that costs about $12.
