Got Plans?

The Going Out Gurus
of the washingtonpost.com City Guide
Thursday, January 5, 2006 1:00 PM

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's City Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the City Guide or read transcripts of past Got Plans? discussions .

The transcript follows.

washingtonpost.com: Good afternoon, Washington D.C. (and 'burbs). We're back after a much-needed holiday break and ready to talk about going out. I'm Fritz, and I'm joined by Rhome, Anne, David, Jen, Julia and Erin. One note before we begin: Our Erin is going to be on Channel 9 News at 5 p.m. today talking about Restaurant Week, and we hope you'll all watch.Okay, on to your questions...

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Good Afternoon Gurus,

Looking to have an unusual meal...Where is a good place to eat and watch belly dancers?

Erin: Afternoon, Arlington. That sounds like fun. There are a few spots 'round town that should suit you. I would suggest that you shake yourself on over to Taste of Morocco in Arlington or Silver Spring , Marrakesh and Casablanca for Moroccan belly dancing. If you'd like to change it up a bit, Dukem restaurant offers Ethiopian entertainment and some fun dancing that seems more unusual than formulaic belly dancing.

U Street, D.C.: To Fritz: a word of support from another guy who doesn't think NYE is all it's cracked up to be.

New Year's 06 this year didn't suck because I spent it doing a large party with friends (for less than the amount we would've spent per head at a supposedly big-scale function with "open bar"). We had all we wanted to eat by combining cooking/pot luck with takeout from a variety of great spots around town. And, we had all the alcohol we wanted/needed.

Afterwards, those with energy to spare went to low-cover/no-cover bar party to hang and be festive with even more folks. No "last dance/last chance" vibe needed to justify the cost.

Thanks for giving me the nudge to break from the peer pressure, and instead ring in NYE sensibly. Now I can blow dough on other cool parties throughout the year!

Fritz: That's great. I had dinner with friends and then went bar-hopping to a bunch of places that didn't have a cover. If there was a line, we went on to the next one. If it was too crowded inside and we couldn't get the the bar, we went on to the next one. We were trying to imagine how ticked off we'd be if we'd gone to one of those sardine factories after paying $85 for "all we could drink once we made it to the front of the line."But what do I know? I got called a New Year's Grinch on the radio.

Thomas Circle, D.C.: Update on American Apparel question: I got an email from their list to check out the new store at Lincoln Square (plus a coupon!). However, I tried calling their phone and got a generic Verizon voicemail. Since I haven't stopped by yet, when will it finally open?

Julia: American Apparel is OPEN and it's lovely. They had several problems getting permits from the city, but everything's all cleared up now. The storefront is on F street at 11th -- right across from H and M. You can buy t-shirts and sweatpants to your heart's content.

_______________________

Cubeh*ll, DC: I headed to Ozio for the first time on Saturday night. Quick question about the dress code there. I (a 30 something dude) am lacking in club attire. On their web site, they specifically say "No jeans" but in the pictures on the web site 75% of the people appear to be wearing jeans. Do they really mean "No unfashionable stoned washed jeans but nice jeans are OK" or should I try to manufacture something that looks nice out my normal work clothes? Thanks!

Fritz: Either or. I've gone in a nice button-down shirt and jeans without a problem. I'd leave most Wranglers at home, though -- stick to the PDC or Diesel end of the spectrum.

_______________________

Art-y question: Has anyone been to the PostSecret exhibition in Georgetown. If so, worth seeing before it closes this weekend?

Julia: Absolutley. Go .

_______________________

Could be confused...: Two questions: 1. Any Indian restaurants near the MCI center? 2. BF and I going to the hockey game tomorrow night. Usually I get tickets in advance, but I thought we'd just get them at the ticket window before the game. Never done this. How early do you think we need to get there and do they ever sell the better seats at a discounted price as game time gets closer just to get rid of them since they're obviously not occupied? Thanks so much...

Erin: Ok, are you looking for regular old Indian food or snazzy Indian food? I am completely enamored of Rasika right now (I'm hitting it up for Restaurant Week) and don't hesitate to recommend that, but it's not hole-in-the-wall Indian food. It's nice. You can justify the cost by hitting it during pre-theater hours. Anyhow, if it's not what you're seeking, (and you're not interested in the fusion-y Indebleu) then I would say that Aroma at 19th or Dupont's Heritage India are the closest solid bets. As for the hockey tickets, I think that you should be fine getting there about 45 minutes to an hour before the game. I don't think that they discount tickets, but would any peanuts like to throw in their advice and experiences?

_______________________

Washington DC: Which show should I see tonight, Iota's or DC9's?

David: Well first I'd recommend checking out the MP3 pages that we have for each band. The IOTA lineup: Full Minute of Mercury , Run Silent Run Deep , Chrysalis . The DC9 lineup: The Opposite Sex doesn't have an MP3 page on our site, but here's their MySpace page , Skydivers and Lejeune . So that should help you. I'd probably opt for DC9, just because the IOTA lineup is a little metal-heavy for me. The DC9 lineup is gentler, more synth-pop, dream-pop sort of stuff. That's more to my liking. But maybe you aren't a wuss like me and want to REALLY RAWK OUT. In any case, good for you for supporting local music.

Alexandria, Va.: Hi Gurus:

I'm 23 and a lot of my friends are moving away for jobs, grad school, and the like. I'd like to meet some new people my age and was thinking of joining an area hockey league or kickball team. The one problem is that I am horrible at sports since I spent all of my childhood at the dance studio. Do you have any suggestions for some good groups to join, preferably ones where talent isn't a big issue? I live right near the Metro so I can get to almost any location in the D.C. area. Thanks! Love your blog, by the way.

Jen: First of all, I don't think you should worry about how talented you may or may not be. I mean, that never stopped Britney Spears, did it?I suspect that many of the people who join local hockey or kickball teams are doing it for the same reason you are: They just want to meet new people. So if that concept still intrigues you, explore it. Ask if you can go to a game once and just watch. That way you'll know if it's overly competitive, or accepting enough that you won't feel pressured to become Ruler of the Kickball Universe. That aside ... you mentioned spending your childhood at the dance studio. If you don't take dance now, why not sign up for a class? That's a great way to meet new friends. I believe the winter session at Joy of Motion is just getting underway, so that's an option. Anyone else have other suggestions for Alexandria?

Washington, D.C.: GURUS.. excellent advice in the past on a sleek place to eat, Tabaq..emm. But now I need help with my New Yorker friend this weekend.. we want to do some "mod Male" shopping, a little tough in DC.. Clothes/Shoes... help a sister out.. Thanks!

Janet: Maybe not as tough as you would think. Three suggestions that may help: Carbon , Pop and Denim Bar .

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi GOGs! I'm going to Tabaq tomorrow, got a reservation on the roof. Is there any drink/food I shouldn't miss?

Erin: That should be great. I hope that you have a clear view. For food: my friend liked the lamb shank on eggplant (I didn't have any). All of the lamb dishes look good. I can personally attest to the deliciousness of the house hummus (I recommend all of the spreads) and the walnut beef. As for cocktails, I like the ginger one (gingebre?) and I'm always partial to mojitos. I think the bartenders excel at muddling up good ones.

_______________________

Alexandria, Va.: I would love to go Ice Skating. I know about the rink on the mall and the one in Pentagon Row, but they are small and crowded. Do you know of anything indoor or off the beaten path where there is room to really skate around?

Julia: Here's a whole bunch of ice skating rinks in the area. Pershing Park is one of my favorites. It doesn't get too crowded even though it's right in the heart of downtown. I also have to mention a completely rad ice-skating celebration in honor of Elvis's 71st birthday this weekend. I'm humming "Suspicious Minds" as I type.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi GoGs. The eastern edge of Capitol Hill has been a "hot" real estate market for a while, especially for youngster couples and families. Yet the bar and restaurant scene is WOEFULLY lacking east of 8th St. Other than Joe Englert's plans for H St. NE, have you heard anything about prospects for getting bars and restaurants in the area? (Maybe in connection with the new development next to the Potomac Ave Metro stop?) Thanks!

Fritz: Aside from Trusty's, which opened at Potomac Ave. last summer, I haven't heard about many new places moving in over on that end of the Hill. If I remember correctly, much of the problem is zoning -- excepting Pennsylvania Ave., most of the area is limited to residential development, not commercial.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Where can I get an outfit like the one Fritz sported on the recent Channel 9 segment?

Fritz: I ordered mine from ClintonPortis.com.

_______________________

Arlington, VA: I've been out of town for a few weeks and am wondering the status of the Washington Ballet season with its strike/lockout? I am scheduled to take my young goddaughter to their Beatles production at the Kennedy Center in February and am wondering if we need to make alternative plans.

Julia: Unfortunately, yes, you do need to make alternate plans. The Washington Ballet is now processing refunds for that show. If you mail your tickets back to them, they will refund you in full. No word yet on when the labor issues will be resolved. As for something else to do with your goddaughter, check out our list of theater and dance performances that weekend.

_______________________

Clyde's at Gallery Place: I just wanted to report that I went to the new Clyde's last night before going to see a movie, and it was absolutely splendid. The food was so much better than the one in Georgetown. The service was outstanding. We told them we had to make a movie in an hour and our server could not have been more accommodating. The space is awesome... I can't wait to try out some one of the many bars there. And best of all, the bathrooms were sooo nice. I recommend highly.

Fritz: I love the new Clyde's. It's gorgeous. It reminds me of a Beaux Arts hotel. One friend thinks it looks like the Titanic. The bars are huge, with plenty of seating. (And you can read more gushing about the place in tomorrow's Weekend Section.)

_______________________

D.C. Restaurant Week: With D.C. Restaurant Week coming up next week, I'd like to figure out where I can get a good meal for the best value (i.e. total savings from the regular cost) since I can't afford to go to expensive restaurants regularly. Any ideas?

Erin: Wow, are we being parsimonious and looking for a sheer economic breakdown of typical menu price to Restaurant Week cost? Are you looking to include upcharges? Can I turn this into a cost benefit analysis and include taste, quality and diner satisfaction? I'm just kidding. It's certainly a good question and a great opportunity to be a thrifty gourmand. I think that Corduroy offers the best RW experience. There usually aren't upcharges and the quality doesn't suffer. That means that you can have pork belly and lobster salad for a bargain basement price. DC Coast , Ceiba , 1789 and Indique will be good deals as well.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Gogs, I need your help! I am in my late 20s and I have a friend from work who is in her early 40s and recently divorced. Where do you suggest us ladies go to happy hour to satisfy our taste for men in each of our age ranges? Thanks!

Rhome: Firefly .

Herndon, Va.: Local Open Mic Nights? Sorry must submit early, working lunch meeting! Please PLEASE help! My boyfriend is a temporary transplant from the SF Bay area and is an amazing guitarist and composer. His music would be classified as possibly progressive/experimental/world.

What are the most prominent, well-attended, and most talented open mic nights around the VA MD DC Metro area? He would be looking not only to play himself but to meet other local musicians for playing and camaraderie.

Before he heads back to CA to permanently pursue his playing and recording there, I'd like to show him that there are also some great places here as well that appreciate talent and originality!

Thanks much!!!! 'G

David: Jammin' Java is probably your best bet. Staccato could work pretty well, too. Anyone out there have any favorites?

Washington, D.C.: Epiphnay and Three Kings in D.C. metro?

Many in the DC area will celebrate the Epiphany, Jan 5-7. On Jan. 5 (Eve) & 6 Latin Americans celebrate the Three Kings'Day, o Fiesta de los Reyes Magos. People gather to exchange small gifts, sing, dance and of course - eat. Community celebrations usually include a visit from the 3 Kings themselves (local volunteers dressed in rich middle eastern attire). Greek, Eastern European and Ethiopian communities also celebrate their own distinct holidays. In the spirit of inclusion... could you provide information on some events, or even better, run a small section on Friday's Weekend Section?

Thank you - Carlos, D.C. Resident

Anne: I don't work for the Weekend section, but I know it is featuring Sunday's Three Kings Day celebration at Gala Hispanic Theater. Some googling proposes a good suggestion -- you could visit the National Gallery of Art and study the several works there depicting the Three Kings or magi . The City Guide will always list the events we know about -- do you know of some others? (You can submit events you're organizing by sending an email to events@washingtonpost.com.)

_______________________

Capitol Hill: Hi GOGs,I feel the need to make all my friends skate around and around a rink while listening to "Xanadu." Are there local places we can rent out for a private party?

Jen: Oh my gosh, I feel that need every day. It's almost like you crawled inside my brain and borrowed my thoughts ... or, possibly, read my bio on the GoG Blog. In any case, there are several roller rinks in the area , but I'm not sure which ones allow private rentals. Try calling around -- start with Franconia, or try the Rockville Skating Center (I think that's still open). You will have to venture to the 'burbs, but if you can make your "Xanadu" dreams come true, it should be worth it.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Which bars serve English real ale? I know you've talked about them before, but I can't find it in the archive.

Fritz: Bars that have it on all the time tend to be brewpubs: I like the rotating specialty at John Harvard's downtown (a had a brown last time I was in). The two Rock Bottoms are generally solid -- I tried the Pale Ale last night in Bethesda -- and Dean Lake, who just took over brewing in Ballston, had some tremendous real ale up at Thoroughbred's in Leesburg. (I don't know if the new brewer is keeping it up.) Shenandoah Brewing Company has a handpump, too. The Reef has a weekly cask, too; tonight, it's Dogfish Head's World Wide Stout, which is a complete beast of a beer. Last week, they had the Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter, the former champion beer of Britain. Don't even talk to me about R.F.D., because the staff usually warns me off the cask when I think about ordering it -- it's often pretty bad.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I'm newly single and new to D.C. Needless to say I'd like to get out and meet more people. What are some of the best bars in D.C. and/or NOVA to meet people (single women)?

Rhome: The ones that have the music, crowd and atmosphere that you dig. What are you into? Maybe your needs are quite simple and you're just looking to pick-up. Here you go .

_______________________

Washington D.C.: Is there a way to get to Birchmere w/o a car?

David: We actually covered this topic in a pretty in-depth manner back in the summer . Click on that lin, hit CTRL + F and type in "birchmere" to follow the string of questions/comments. Basically, short answer: yes. Is it easy? No.

_______________________

Washington DC: Hello. I have 2 shopping questions. First, I would like to find a thrift store where I can find funky and vintage clothing at reasonable prices. Second, I remember a discussion once about stores that fit customers for bras, but can't seem to find the transcript now. Any advice on either question? Thanks!

Janet: Although it's not as easy as it used to be to find funky, vintage clothing that is also reasonably priced, I'd still venture Meeps & Aunt Neensie's in the U Street corridor as a suggestion. You could also try Nana in the same nabe. As for bra fitting, I've recommended Sylene and Underwraps in the past, and I stand by those suggestions.

_______________________

Erin, you ROCK!!: Erin, thank you for recommending La Mexicana Bakery and Taqueria (odd name, GREAT FOOD) the other week for my Mexican fix! I died and went to heaven (hey, I'm Texan, what can I say?). And it's in Alexandria, which is not very far from me.

Question: Where can I take an old flame for drinks in the Northern VA area? Preferably in the Arlington area. I'm new here, sorry!

Thanks guys!

Erin: Wow, thanks (mom?). I'm glad I could help a fellow Mexican food-lover and am happy to do it anytime. As for your question, I like the wines at Tallula, you could get a sangria at Gua Rapo and Eleventh Street is nice as well.

_______________________

Springfield: Hi! I'm going to watch Harry Potter at the Imax theater at the Air and Space Museum. Is there any where to park that is near by or should I just take the metro. Thanks!

Jen: You may be able to find parking nearby, but it's so much easier to Metro to that museum. That's what I would do if I were you.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I've lived in this city for 24 years and I am ecstatic that the Redskins are back in the playoffs. Me and a good 20 of my friends want to watch this game somewhere in the city. Any suggestions? I was thinking a sports bar around MCI Center or Georgetown.

Fritz: This will sound funny -- I know it will -- but I might suggest you go to Lucky Strike. Yeah, it's a bowling alley, but that's secondary when you think about the three 10-foot screens, the dozens of plasmas, the couches and the beer. There should be plenty of room for all of you.

_______________________

Arlington: Hello GOGs!

Wanna take out my friends to a great night out in Arlington, but I need ideas as to what bars to take them. We love Guarapo's, Whitlow's, Iota, Dr. Dremo's, but I was looking for something that possibly had a dance floor as well as a bar and tables? Other than Guarapo's does this exist in Arlington? Thanks so much!

Fritz: That would be ... Clarendon Grill, unless I'm missing something.

_______________________

Redskins, DC: So, can't go to Tampa, where do you recommend a group of 8 or so watch the redskins game? Yes, we want to go to a bar not stay at home, yes we know we're crazy. Somewhere in the District, preferably NW area--- and yes we will get there early to get seats. We're thinking Mackeys, anywhere else that you can think of? Prefer a place with one large screen and some decent bar food. Thanks! You guys rock!

Fritz: Mackey's is a fine choice. I like Porter's, too, because there are multiple screens. Same with Ventnor in Adams Morgan, maybe the new Cleveland Park Bar and Grill -- it's fine for TVs and beer.

_______________________

Bethesda, MD: It's my friend's birthday next Friday and he loves cupcakes. I am looking for any recommendation for a good bakery that makes cupcakes. Any suggestions?

Erin: I'm with him on that one. I love cupcakes. Maybe he'd want to go in on a Buttercup Bakery franchise with me. In the meantime, call Baked and Wired and figure out when they're doing cupcakes. If you can't make it to Georgetown, Wheat Berry in Cleveland Park has good ones and you can buy some at Balducci's.

_______________________

Logan Circle, D.C.: Hey Gurus,

Hope your holidays went well. My husband and I bought one of those little (2 feet) living Christmas trees for our apartment. Is there a way to dispose of the tree like donate to a tree farm or another good cause. Must be Metro accessible! Thanks!

Anne: Generally, tree farms aren't Metro-accessible. Is there a school or a park near your place that might welcome a young tree? The DC Parks and Rec number is 202-673-7647. Another idea is to contact a community garden -- check growdc.org.

_______________________

Washington, DC: Not sure if you've wrote about this before but a great little place is Aroma on Friday Nights...I used to go when Dj Dredd was there but now since he has moved on to his own restaurant, the new DJ, Madness, is great as well and definitely a place worth checking...

Rhome: I hadn't even followed up to see what Aroma was doing once Dredd packed up. Madness has been around for a long time in this city but hasn't often gotten the good gigs. He's solid and gets the Guru Seal of Approval.

_______________________

Alexandria, Va.: Hitting a few places in/around Penn Quarter tonight for drinks, we'll most likely check out RFD, maybe Coyote Ugly for some laughs and slight I-don't-belong-here feeling, but is there someplace we can go beforehand that's not too sex-in-the-city but where we can have a nice cocktail? Also, anyone know of a dive bar that used to be a block or so from MCI? Don't recall the name but it was on the second floor of a building...looked for but couldn't find it last week.

Fritz: I'd say the bar at Rasika would be a good choice. Really nice cocktails with some spice and zest. drinx. might also work, though service there can be dodgy. You're thinking of Top Shelf on New Jersey Ave. I tried calling them a while ago and the phone was disconnected. You might want to try the Irish Channel, a cozy little pub a block away from MCI -- in the Red Roof Inn, of all place.

_______________________

Wedding Dos: I hope you all might be able to help me with this or someone out there today. I need help! I'm getting married in June and I need a recommendation on where to go for updos makeup and nails for the wedding party. I cant afford to pay for everyone so I need it to be reasonably priced and still look fabulous (bonus if they can travel and pamper us all at my place or the church) This is in the Springfield/Alexandria area. Any advice or names?

Janet: Do you have a place where you regularly go to get your hair cut? I'd start in your own backyard. Start with your local salon and ask who can do hair, nails and makeup for a wedding party. They're sometimes willing to travel to the venue, too. Anyone out there have a recommendation?

_______________________

Washington DC: Hey Gurus, I'm trying to reconcile with my beau - what are the top 3 most romantic places to dine in the city? Pricewise - definitely willing to spend, but not trying to break the bank. (btw - can you leave Little fountain cafe off the list). Thanks so much!!

Erin: Good luck with that. How about Tabard Inn , Le Paradou , Bistro Lepic , Al Tiramisu or Firefly ?

_______________________

20009: Hey Gurus,

Can you tell me what happened the 4 P's in Cleveland Park? Why is it called Four Green Fields now? Is it really different? I am confused. Thanks!

Fritz: It's kind of simple, yet odd.Owner Christy Hughes sold the Falls Church branch late last year, and when he did, the new owners wound up with the rights to the name "Ireland's Four Provinces" along with it. His brother Frank, who's a partner in the Cleveland Park pub, said that it's ironic that the original pub, which has had the name since 1977, is the one that had to change, but that's the law for you. The only thing that's changed is that the pub now has a shorter name.

_______________________

Needing friends: Alexandria, VA- I hear you loud and clear. Right now, I live the life with all of my friends in the District. But by August, they're all going to be gone. I've done kickball before and feel pretty luke warm about it. I am sports challenged and definitely cannot dance. Any other ideas about how to boost my friendship numbers?

Jen: Sounds like you're looking for a more cerebral activity to introduce you to more people. Do you belong to a book club? If not, ask friends or colleagues if they belong to one you might be able to join. Even if you already know one or two of the members, chances are there are others you don't know. And those people might provide an entry into entirely new circles of friends. Or sign-up to do volunteer work that involves a group effort, like fixing houses or serving food at a homeless shelter. Honestly, there is probably a group out there for every service or activity that interests you. Make a list of things that you like and start searching around for organizations that focus on those things.

_______________________

Hockey Tix: Usually you would have not problem getting hockey tickets, but tomorrow is the Flyers game and lots of Philly Fans will be there. You can probably buy the expensive tickets at the window. All the cheapies will be sold out. Best bet is to buy off and "ticket broker" on the st. Probably have to pay 25$ for a 5/10$ ticket

Erin: Ok, thanks for the input. Get on those tickets early to help cheer on the Caps.

Washington, D.C.: Hi gurus, submitting this one early,

In Baltimore, where I grew up, there are College Nights where young clubgoers mingle and flirt and grind against each other. It's a "meat market" atmosphere where everyone is having a lot of fun. I realize Baltimore is a more down-to-earth, blue-collar kind of town, but the closest equivalent I've found in DC is Platinum. I loathe the obnoxious "yuppie" places in NW and stay away from them. What else besides Platinum can you suggest (I'm guessing it'll be in NE, although even Dream/Love has that elitist white-collar feel that I dislike).

Rhome: Young folk wildin' out up in the club because they're excited to be off campus? Ahhh... I remember those days. R.I.P. to The Ritz. You might want to try Home if you're looking for something similar to Platinum. They're practically right next door to each other anyway and DJ Enferno kills it on Saturdays.

_______________________

Wheaton: What's the scoop on the changes at Quarry House in Silver Spring? I'm not that big a fan of Jackie's and always dug the old Quarry House, so I've been reluctant to stop in. Also, any word on the new club, Pearl, I think it is called in downtown Wheaton. Thanks!

Fritz: I haven't been back yet, but I'm hearing lots of rumblings of discontent from staff and patrons. I'd hoped it would all work out, but some of the new changes (no more pitchers of beer, for example, and a fancier menu) don't seem to have gone over well with the regulars.

_______________________

Ashburn, VA: Fritz, wondering if you have made it out to Sterling to see the new Ned Devine's Irish Village? Couple friends spent new year's eve there and said it is remarkable what they were able to do. We're planning on making a trip over on Saturday.

Fritz: It's on my to-do list.

re: Postsecret: My two cents: go to the Postsecret exhibition and stand in line to read the notes/sit at the reader's corner and read the book that contains all notes OR don't go to the exhibition and buy/borrow the book.

Either way, you still experience the idea of Postsecret.

Julia: There weren't any lines when I went on a Saturday afternoon and I thought that being there added a whole new dimension to the project. Actually going to the exhibit allows you to interact with other exhibit-goers. I walked around with my friend and talked about the secrets and our own secrets and secrets we thought were cool and why we thought they were cool. I heard other groups of friends doing the same thing. That was a new element to what has been a completely anonymous project. But, yeah, either way, the idea of PostSecret is a cool one. Check it out however you can.

Washington, DC: Has anyone heard of this new Wilfried Huismann film, "Rendezvous with Death"? This new film alleges a link between the assassination of Kennedy and Cuba. Anyone know if it is playing or being broadcast anywhere?

Thanks much!

Jen: This doesn't ring a bell. There's a New German Film Festival coming up at Landmark's E Street, but I don't see that film on the schedule. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for it.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus... where is the best place to go for a margarita after work in the Georgetown or Rosslyn/Ballston/Arlington areas? Preferably one with food/drink specials, or on the cheaper side.

Thanks!

- The fab four

Fritz: Dear Fab Four,I like the margaritas at Caribbean Breeze in Ballston. They have "fab" mojitos and great happy hour deals, too.

_______________________

Foggy Bottom: I can report from friends whose opinions I trust about beer that the new brewer at Thoroughbred's is doing a splendid job.

Fritz: Glad to hear it. I need to get back out there...

_______________________

Dupont Circle: Looking for a new neighborhood bar...something along the lines of a dive... ala the 4P's and Natty O'Briens in Cleveland but in Dupont. Something casual where you can go get a drink by yourself or after work...not sure what's around here other than the gay bars. Thanks!

Fritz: Townhouse Tavern? Fox and Hounds? Biddy Mulligan's?

DC: Hey!

I'm dating a great guy who is totally into sports, scared to be adventurous and seems to only like eating at bars and American food places. I am the type of girl who loves going out for sushi, Indian, Spanish and wants to do active things. It's gotten to the point where our typical date is lame food and a movie. Can you think of anything he might be into that we could enjoy together? Thanks and Happy New Year!

Rhome: Why can't you just alternate? One date you do something that fits your tastes, the next one is his preference. If you can't compromise what's the point of being together? It's all about real talk in the '06 (not like that's anything new).

_______________________

Shaw, DC: Hey, I love your Q&A! I was wondering if anyone can tell me why Brokeback Mountain is only showing at one movie theater in the District? Is there any hope that additional theaters will eventually pick it up since it is nominated for so many rewards? Thanks GOG!

Jen: It's playing at several theaters, just not many in D.C. proper. The number of theaters in which "Brokeback" is showing around the country will expand in the next couple of weeks leading up to the Golden Globes. Hopefully that means another D.C. theater will pick it up. The Loews Dupont wouldn't exactly be my top place to see any movie, especially one that looks so lovely on a big screen.

Washington, D.C: Which is the best place to get a tattoo in the area?

David: Today I feel like being the Got Plans? search function. Tattoos, you say? Discussed in this GP classic .

Washington, D.C.: What are your thoughts about H st Martini Lounge, Karma and Russia House for cocktails with a few friends on a Friday night? Are there better nights to try them out? Thanks!

Fritz: H Street: Okay, good if you're in the area, but not really worth the trip yet. That said, I hear they're improving. Karma: Best for happy hour, arrive early to snag a table. Good bartenders, gets crowded. Russia House: Comfy couches, opulent setting (marble set into the walls, etc.). Can get really expensive really quickly if you start doing shots, but stick to martinis and you'll be fine. It gets busy later than the other two.

Washington, D.C.: You guys are great. However, Cityguide is not great. I find it very difficult to navigate. It seems that the closest Metro station is no longer given. Instead a neighborhood is given that may not indicate the closest Metro (for example, Chocolate Moose's neighborhood is Dupont, but Farragut North is the closest Metro). Full reviews from Tom Sietsema are very difficult to find (in CityGuide and on the web site in general) and CityGuide is incomplete. Last week, I searched in vain (using many different keywords) for information on Comedy of Errors at the Shakespeare Theatre. I found nothing in CityGuide even though this was currently playing and had been reviewed by the Post. Then I wanted to search for events on Saturday. I can search for the weekend but not the day. The search options are too limited. How, for example, would I search for just museum exhibitions on Saturday? The old entertainment guide had problems, but was much better than CityGuide.

Anne: Thanks for the feedback, DC. To answer your questions, many places do list the nearest Metro, like the Daily Grill , for example. If we've included that info, it will be right there under the neighborhood. We'll add the nearest Metro listed to more places. To find Tom Sietsema's reviews , just type Sietsema in the City Guide keyword search. Click on each restaurant to read the full review. The Comedy of Errors temporarily disappeared because of a technical glitch, but it's back now. One way to find museum exhibits you can see this Saturday is to start on the City Guide main page and click Show All under the Browse Categories header. Pick Exhibits to see all of the exhibits, default sorted by when they end. If you want to see only the ones that are on exhibit this Saturday (most of them) scroll down and on the left, under the Date refine choice, click Show All and pick Jan. 7 from the calendar. Please write us at CityGuideHelp@washingtonpost.com if you have other questions.

Washington, DC: Hey, a response to the earlier Kickball question. I loved my kickball team this spring and going out with them tomorrow even though the season ended 3 months ago! The people are great, and while a few can get needlessly competitive, most are chill. With a 45 minute game and the rest of the night to hang at the bar, the priority is definitely meeting cool folk, not proving your athletic skills. I say go for it!

Jen: The kickball contingent weighs in ... you feelin' that, Alexandria?

Anonymous: Can't believe you like American Apparel. I went after reading about you waiting for it open - what horrible quality at ridiculous prices. I would be embarrassed to claim that garbage as American. The most ridiculous items are those labeled "sheer" because the fabric is so damn cheap EVERYTHING is sheer.

Julia: And now for a completely different take on American Apparel. I think the prices are good on some things (sexy t-shirts are a reasonable $14) and not so good on others (I'm totally not paying $36 for a skirt I could sew together myself with my eyes closed). That being said, I think the comments on the fabric quality are a bit off-base. I have a few band t-shirts that were silkscreened on American Apparel digs and they have held up really well over the years. To each his own....

Washington, DC: Hi GOG's!!!What should I do tonight? Think bars....booze...happy hour....hotties.

Rhome: You should have a house party and invite everyone from the chat. Anything else would be a let-down. Pass the Courvoisier.

Alexandria, Va.: I was in San Antonio, and found a restaurant that had 50% off any bottle of wine over $50 on Wednesdays. Do you know of any similar deals in DC?

Erin: Heck yeah. There are tons of places with great deals. Most notable: Clyde's does 1/2-priced wine on Sundays, Sonoma/Mendocino both discount Sundays as well and Mondays are half-off at Olazzo .

Washington, DC: Hey Gurus-Ladies, you may know the answer to this. I'm supposed to go to a gala in a few weeks and I have not been able to find a dress anywhere? (by anywhere I mean Pentagon City Mall). I know DC has balls and galas all the time, so there has to be somewhere where everyone goes to get a ball gown. Any suggestions?

Janet: Nothing at Nordstrom? Try Saks, Neiman's and Bloomie's and look for labels like Teri Jon, Carmen Marc Volvo, ABS or BCBG. Don't know how much you want to spend, but the labels mentioned above are reasonable.

Arlington, Va.: I'm looking for some information on Dupont Circle's First Friday gallery crawl tomorrow, can you help? Specifically, I would like to know what galleries participate and what I should expect.

Julia: As newly anointed museum gal, I'm going to First Friday myself. Check out this list of several of the galleries involved. I used to live in that section of Dupont and the whole area just lights up on First Fridays. I think your best bet is to wander around an stroll into whatever random gallery beckons. You see some new contemporary art tomorrow -- like this conceptual photography exhibit at the Conner Contemporary.

Arlington, Va.: So, I have these friends who want to go to Dream (or Love or whatever their calling themselves this week), and I'm debating whether or not this is something I want to do. Can you give me a sense of what it's like? I always think I'm going to like dance clubs, because I love to dance, but often I find the scene so pretentious, the people annoying, and the drinks very expensive, and that I just want to go home and watch a Sopranos DVD instead. What kind of music do they play? What's the vibe like? I went to Blue Gin earlier this year and was seriously underwhelmed by the music, the crowd, the drinks, and the space. Am I going to like Dream/Love? Or should I pass and spend the night with Tony Soprano and my cat?

Fritz: Love is ... well, love. It's huge, it's crowded and drinks aren't cheap. They do a good job keeping a steady flow of folks on the floor with radio-friendly hip-hop, some house and plenty of old-school tracks. The setting is much bigger and more varied than Blue Gin, but -- and don't hold this against me -- you don't sound like you generally enjoy dance clubs in general. I don't know what kind of music you like, but it sounds like you'd be a better fit for Five or even Mantis than one of the megaclubs.

Alexandria, Va.: GoG,

Any ideas on a Tryst-like place in VA (Alexandria, especially)? I love Tryst, and wish I could spend more time there, but it's such a pain to park there, and it's a bit away from me. Thanks!

Erin: Hm, that's a tough one. I would say battle parking at Tryst. If that doesn't fly, Misha's is the closest you'll get in Alexandria or Murky Coffee in Arlington.

Washington, DC: Have I missed something, or is it impossible to search the GOG Blog? (I'm trying to find your words of wisdom about Zengo.) Thanks!

Fritz: You can't search, unfortunately, but you can narrow it down by category on the left (bars, restaurants, etc.) and then do a "find" command in your browser from there.

Silver Spring, MD: Here's a report on the Quarry House Tavern... checked it out last Friday for dinner, it was pretty crowded. Place has obviously been shined up but no other changes are obvious to the interior. (Maybe the jukebox, but I forgot to check.) The menu is different, but not drastically so... still plenty of burgers along with some other "bar food" staples (dogs and the like). The burger wasn't at all the same (they use some fancy organic beef that is doubtless much healthier than the old stuff, but not as juicy/greasy) but it was good. Beer selection was suffering that night but they still had Wild Goose and a few more. For me, the bottom line is it wasn't that different (yet) but if you were hooked on the food, you'd have to assess for yourself. It's probably worth doing so.

Fritz: One field report. Thanks.

Redskins Game: You should go watch the game at Arlington Cinema Drafthouse. Huge movie screen and beer! Go!

Fritz: That's one option, and you'll have a good view of the screen.

Arlington, VA: Is it true that you can fondle the equipment of the dancers in gay male strip clubs in DC.I am planning a bachelorette party for my sorority sister and this would be over the top for all of us. Which club has the best dancers?

Fritz: The "no touching" rule applies to men as well as women.

Washington, D.C.: This seems like a long shot, but I thought I'd try anyway. I made a resolution to play more pool in 2006, and I was wondering whether you knew of any billiards/pool clubs that meet regularly in the District (or even Arlington), particularly ones composed of younger people (20's/early 30's). Thanks in advance...

Fritz: Good question. I'll throw this out there and post the answers, if any.

Logan Circle/DC: Wow, Erin-- where's the 'Love, you giving up on CakeLove's cupcakes?

Erin: Wow, Logan. That could be a question for the Black Eyed Peas. As for CakeLove, there are a few reasons that I didn't throw it out there. First, I'm partial to Baked and Wired's product. Second, it's often the first place people think of, so I threw out a few less obvious spots. I don't mean to be hating, though.

HR-57: Is HR-57 still dry? I've checked the web site and it doesn't say one way or the other if they have gotten a liquor license. We just need to know if we should pick up a six pack on the way or not.

Fritz: They do indeed sell beer and wine, but you can still BYO for a small corkage fee.

Takoma Park, Md.: Any interesting free events going on next week in the evenings?

Anne: I'm interested in the reception before the DC Modern series , being held at Design Within Reach in Georgetown, 6-8 on Thursday. Wonkette , a k a Ana Marie Cox, is talking on Monday. Millennium Stage will hook you up with a free performance every night. Here's some more freebies coming up.

Washington, D.C.: What is going to be the status of bars serving hookah pipes after the smoking ban goes into effect?

Fritz: Hookah bars are exempt from the ban. As Carol Schwartz said, If the smoking ban is a workers-rights issue, why is it okay to endanger the health of workers in some bars (hookah bars, cigar bars) but not others?

Ice Skating: For Alexandria -- Cabin John Ice Rink has ADULT-ONLY skate sessions on Thursday nights. I discovered this distinction is vitally important after wading through a sea of waist-high, oblivious rugrats at an ice rink on a Saturday afternoon. Much less crowded and more enjoyable without the moving obstacles........

David: Ooh, sounds kinky. Thanks for the tip.

Washington, D.C.: Hi. A friend and I want to learn hand-dancing in dc.. Do you know of any places? Thanks

Fritz: I've had good experiences with Poetry in Motion (http://www.poetryinmotion1.com/) and Smooth N EZ (http://www.smoothnez.com/) and would recommend their instructors.

Washington via B'more: Hey guys, Happy New Year. I used to live in DC for about 7 years before moving to Baltimore to go back to school. I'm going to be in DC for a few days next week to visit my girlfriend but her classes start so with the exception of lunches with friends I will be on my own. I want to go to the zoo to see the new panda but I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of some exhibits in the museums or anything else going on. Thanks.

Julia: I'd check out Gryoscope at the Hirshorn -- a very cool re-installation. Sam Gilliam: A Retrospective is a good one as well.

Arlington, Va.: Have you guys ever heard of Mini Bar. I think it is a small restaurant or part of a restaurant that serves a multiple course meal...but of small, unique plates specially created by the chef. Any ideas of how to get more information, phone number, etc or if it is even still open?

Erin: MiniBar is part of Cafe Atlantico. Call them to find out more, but Chef Katsuya Fukushima does some pretty amazing things with textures and tastes. When last we spoke, he had an amazing take on buffalo chicken wings. Yum. They only do 2 seatings a night and it books far ahead, but it's worth it.

Washington, DC: Hey Crew -

I went to Adams Mill on NYE for their advertised (and listed in the WP) no cover night and they were charging $10 to get in. The bouncer said it was a last minute decision. Also, Pharmacy Bar was charging $40 to get in on NYE. Pharmacy Bar! And this was after midnight. Dissappointing moves for both of them.

Fritz: Ah, the old bait n switch. But Pharmacy? Wow. That's like ... wow. Someone have a talk with Kristaps, please. Wow. I hope you got all the Hoegaarden you could drink for that much.

13th and L: Dear Gogs:

I am writing early because I have a working lunch meeting. I dont know why my boss insists on havint them every Thursday its almost as if she is trying to keep us from reading yall. Its not like she doesnt get a body wax every other Tuesday.

Anyhow, me and like a bunch of my friends from New York are looking for a place to go out. I want to show them a typical DC bar- where should I take them. I would like somewhwere that has cheap drinks and foods that start with the letter R. The guys should be able to watch sports from Peru and the girls would like a blue dance floor with hip hop music sung in 3/4 time. Also, midget servers would be a bonus. And no crowds, I dont want to be surrounded by the poor people from the suburbs nor the poseurs from the city.

Thanks!

Rhome: I hear they have loads of places with all that stuff in New York. This one spot even had multiple tv's showing Peruvian bullfighting . Awesome! Have you been there? We're still playing catch-up down here below the Mason-Dixon.

Kennedy Center: Hi-

I haven't been by the Kennedy Center in ages. Are there any cool bars to hang out at after a show on Saturday that we could walk to?

Thanks!

Erin: Sure, I think that you could mosey over to Circle Bistro 's lounge for a Dark and Stormy or grab a drink at Vida .

Fritz: If it's not too late, I like the back bar at Notti Bianche.

Washington, D.C.: I've got a friend who will celebrate his 26th next Saturday. He dies for good chicken wings and french fries, and is very adverse to "fusion" or "fancy" food. He likes to keep the food simple. I want to have a great get-together at a hip bar, but the hipper the bars get, the weirder the plates get.

Going Out Gurus, is there a perfect marriage of great chicken wings and a trendy bar atmosphere anywhere in DC?

Fritz: I think drinx., because they have a user-friendly menu (burgers! wings! sandwiches!) and a long cocktail list with some really well-made drinks. It's just trendy enough, and we had our office holiday party there.

Erin: I vote Hooters. In all seriousness, I think that McCormick and Schmick's and Zoo Bar have pretty tasty ones.
