The Going Out Gurus
of the washingtonpost.com City Guide
Thursday, January 12, 2006; 1:00 PM

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's City Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the City Guide or read transcripts of past Got Plans? discussions .

The transcript follows.

washingtonpost.com: Afternoon, rock stars. It's pretty peachy outside today and we're keeping our fingers crossed that the long weekend offers some more of the same. Lots of questions about the Redskins today (wonder why...). We've got a lively group here with Anne, Julia, David, Jen, Janet, Fritz and Rhome itching to start answering . I'm Erin and I'm behind the wheel of this here chat, so fasten your seatbelts and let's get going.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus!

I heard that Butterfield 9 is doing a "Double Restaurant Week". Do you know of any other restaurants that are extending Restaurant Week?

Erin: From what I've heard, Sam and Harry's, Dino and the places in Washington Harbour (Sea Catch, Cabanas, Nick's Riverside Grille and Tony and Joe's) will be extending it in addition to Butterfield 9. How is everyone loving Restaurant Week so far? Hope you're eating well.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi gurus--Love the chat. I hope you can help! I want to get my boyfriend a new wallet, but he won't use anything leather. Any ideas on somewhere to get a leather-free men's wallet (a nice one---not one made out of duct tape or plastic). Thanks guys!

Janet: Hi, there,

I just called Pangea Vegan Store and they said they carry men's wallets made out of hemp. Hope that works for you.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I would like to take a class on art history. I have checked out the Corcoran and other museums and do not find anything that fits. Do you or the crowd have any ideas. Ps-- it would have to be after normal business hours. Thanks!

Julia: Have you tried the Smithsonian Associates Program ? Click on the Courses link on the left-hand side. I'd recommend checking out the local universities as well. George Washington has a great museum studies program and American University's art history program is well-regarded, too. Probably a little on the pricey side, though.

Logan Circle, D.C.: Hi G.O.G.,

My parents are in town and I am looking for suggestions for dinner around Dupont/Logan/Downtown or G-Town. My mom is a foodie and my dad a meat and potatoes, but tolerable to experiment, as long as it's not the lobster foam reduction type. Is there anywhere that you recommend, preferably not a chain, where their food preferences can meet in the middle? I have already thought of Johnny's/Cashions so anything else would be welcome. Thanks much and a happy 2006.

Erin: I think Viridian might be good for you. They had an interesting buffalo steak when I was there and also play with unique seasonal vegetables that would please your mom. Otherwise, Mendocino Grille is a good bet in Georgetown, Hank's Oyster Bar and Komi are also worth a look.

_______________________

Judiciary Square, D.C.: Hi GOGs! SO excited to have reservations at Rasika for RW on Saturday! We can't wait to check it out! Just wondering if anyone knows the best way to get there? Metro to Gallery Place? If we drive do they have parking? valet?

Erin: You should definitely be excited - I think Rasika is arguably cooking up the best Indian in the area these days. As for getting there, it's about 2 blocks from Gallery Place, but they do have valet parking.

Washington, D.C.: Dear All-Knowing Gurus,

Here's a kind of random question (and I'm sure in one way or another this has to do with going out) but what are the rules surrounding going to a "Key Party" if you don't have a car, and therefore don't have any keys to drop in the bowl??

Will house keys do?

Thanks!!!!

Jen: Are we talking key party, as in the key party in the "Ice Storm"? If that's that the case, I don't think people at that kind of party would care if you used the key to your diary.

Now if the party has a Key Master, like in "Say Anything," then the question of not having a car would be moot, as the point of the Key Master ("You must chill!") is to prevent people from drinking and driving.

But I kinda don't think that's what you meant.

_______________________

Restaurant Week: I went to the District Chophouse for restaurant week, and it was such a good deal. You get an appetizer, entree, salad, and desert. The entrees were items from the regular menu and were the normal size they usually serve. The food was amazing and the service was top notch. If anyone's still thinking of somewhere to go I highly recommend it.

Erin: Thanks for the feedback. That's good to know for next time around (I'm already counting down until August.)

_______________________

Alexandria, Va.: I noticed a new restaurant has opened at the corner of King and Union Streets in Old Town (where the Alamo was). Any info? Any other new restaurants in Old Town? thanks!

Erin: That's 100 King , from the group behind the garlic-infused Guru fave, Lebanese Taverna. This place is much sleeker. The restaurant is very open and light. There are two levels and large windows overlooking King St. The food blends French/Mediterranean/Lebanese and offers lots of small plates. I am still partial to the great basics at LebTav, but I think that 100 King adds a posh vibe to that part of Old Town.

_______________________

U Street: What's the deal with DC Sanctuary? When does the party get going there? Is it only a late-night spot? And what kind of music do they spin?

Rhome: Straight up deep, soulful house. The culture of that scene makes it a really late spot. 11pm arrival is considered early. The best span of time is midnight to 3 am but the music usually keeps going until 5 am.

What to expect: Friendly, close-knit hardcore devotees of the music in a space that feels like someone's home. Dancers range from the awe-inspiring to folks who just want to move any way they know how. No one really cares as long as everyone respects each others' space and the floor (spilling drinks is a no-no as is smoking). DJs have to be on their toes because the patrons know what's up and have high expectations. It's definitely not a pick-up spot and has more of a family energy. The sound system is seismic, bring earplugs.

Cleveland Park, D.C.: Regarding Ireland's Four Provinces, what's the scoop? New sign, new name, new owners? Anything else changing there? Does it have to do with the smoking ban?

Fritz: We covered some of this last week: To make a long story short, Christy Hughes, who owned the 4Ps since 1991, sold the Falls Church branch in 2004. In the sale, that pub got the rights to the name. (I still haven't been told why.) Last year, Christy sold the Cleveland Park pub to his brother, Frank. The Falls Church pub owned the name, so the Cleveland Park pub had to change its name. They settled on the Four Green Fields -- fans of Yeats and Tommy Makem will know it's an allegorical reference to Ireland's Four Provinces.

I've been in since the name change and nothing seems that different: great pint of Guinness, great 46-guestion pub quiz, pleasant bartenders.

(And this has NOTHING to do with the smoking ban. To date, no D.C. bars can blame the proposed ban for their demise.)

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I keep hearing this rumor that perms have changed these days. Less ramen noodles, more Grace Adler. Is this true? And if so, is there a place in DC that is sort of specializing in this? Thanks!

Janet: That's a tough one. I don't know anyone who's had a perm in a long time. Anyone out there had a good -- or bad -- experience with a perm lately?

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: I heard that a touring production of "Spamalot" is going to be coming to Washington, maybe to the Warner Theatre. I can't dig up any confirmation of this on the web...do you folks know anything?

Erin: Does our site count as confirmation ? Don't fret. It will run at National Theatre beginning June 6.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.- wine bars??: So, I'm looking for a wine bar downtown...can you help? I've been to Sonoma on the hill.. anywhere else to share a bottle of fine wine? Where are all the wine bars??

Fritz: Mendocino in Georgetown's a good one (from the same owners as Sonoma). Charlie Palmer has a good by-the-glass selection, and I'm partial to the upstairs lounge at Bistro Lepic in Georgetown.

Eastern Market & Used Books: Have a couple of random questions, thought you all would be able to help!! Thanks!!

I was planning on going to Eastern Market this weekend for the first time to look for an artsy, unique or antique-y gift for my boyfriend. I looked up info on the web site and it said that the Flea Market was on Sunday and some art thing on Saturday. Not looking to spend too much money - what day should I go?!?!

Also, on another topic, where I can sell/give away used textbooks. Second Story's web site (my old place to sell my books) says that it does not take textbooks. I really have no use or desire to keep my old Legal Ethics text, but have issues with throwing it away and don't think that it will be too useful to Goodwill!

Thanks so much!!

Julia: I've always found Eastern Market to be better on Sundays. The flea market is a great spot gifts; I was very tempted by a vintage Redskins lampshade last time I was there. Make sure you check out the basketball court area on the right side of 7th Street (as you are looking north). Great deals in there -- if you can sort through a lot of junk.

Don't know off the top of my head about any used book dealers that take textbooks. Have you considered crashing a used book sale at one of the local universities? Chatters, any suggestions?

Former Williamsburg resident: So, the Tribe will never make it to the final four, eh Jen? Come on, just give Tony Shaver a couple of years to get the program in shape! Did you catch the UMD/Duke game last night...?

Jen: I am sorry to admit that I wasted more than an hour of my life watching the second half of the Maryland/Duke game. I'm not even sure you can call it a game, really. It was more like basketball solitaire. (Duke: Kicking butt. University of Maryland: Just watching.) Frankly the whole thing was so traumatic that I can barely discuss it.

At least I was smart enough to watch "Lost" instead of the first half.

As for William & Mary, I would love to see them in any kind of tournament someday. But given that they've just lost four in a row, I am not optimistic of that happening, say, before I die.

_______________________

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Hi GOG's I've been out of the going out loop for a couple months and I'm ready to come out of my shell this weekend. My friends want to check out lucky strike and then hit a bar in the area afterwards. I've never really hung out in that neighborhood on the weekends - do you have any recommendations? In my neck of the woods I like the Reef, Pharmacy Bar, Local 16 types of places. What do you think?

Fritz: I think you won't find much like those spots around Gallery Place, though I really enjoy the new Clyde's -- it's spacious, it's classy and all-around comfortable. If you're looking to save a few bucks after bowling, my reasonable-price fallback in the neighborhood is the Irish Channel, a pub a few blocks away at 5th and H.

_______________________

Cleveland Park: Hey Gurus, Do you have any information on how/where to join a group beach house? Would love to do something in Dewey this summer. Thanks!

Fritz: There's an annual beach-house happy hour that matches prospective renters and rentees. Here's what I wrote about it last March:

Thursday, March 10

As silly as it sounds, it's time to start planning for beach season. We know -- you've got more on your mind right now than where you're going to crash in Dewey on a lazy July weekend, but if you don't starting thinking now, you're going to be one of those folks sending out e-mails like this on Thursday afternoons: "Hi Guys. Can anyone let me crash at their house this weekend?" Make it easy for yourself: Head out to one of the weekly House Book Sign-Up Nights. Tonight from 7 to 10, Dewey's legendary Starboard hosts a party at the Bottom Line to help folks looking for spaces in beach houses find the folks who have vacancies. (Simple, right?) The Starboard's DJ Smoky provides the tunes; the bar provides the specials. Can't make it? On Tuesdays, Ballston's Front Page is the place to be, with music by beach favorites Love Seed Mama Jump and $2.25 beers. Sign-up nights at both bars run through the first week of April.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus, I need your help! I'd like to surprise my friend with a pedicure after her birthday lunch on Saturday. We'll be in the Gallery Place/Chinatown area. Are there any good nail places there? We'd be willing to travel as long as it's on the metro. And I'm looking for something in the $30 range - no pricey Red Doors. I appreciate your help!

Janet: Salon Cielo has a location in Dupont Circle; they offer a petite pedicure (25 minutes) for $25; the more deluxe version is $40.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi GoGs,Is there a moderately priced all-you-can-eat sushi buffet in the area?

Erin: Is Herndon too far out for you? Eve Zibart reviewed Matsuri in last week's Weekend section.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Has anyone been to the new Brazilian gaucho steakhouse on Penn Ave called Fogo de Chao. If so is it worth the trip or any other feedback?

Thanks.

Erin: Great timing: I stopped into Fogo de Chao for dinner this week. It's pretty good - the meat is high quality, diverse and plentiful and they have a nice salad bar. I liked the pepper spicing on the bacon-wrapped chicken/filet mignon. The meats tend to be on the rarer side, but that showcases the flavor. They also have an extensive wine list to accompany all of the different meats. It's a pretty pricey dining experience (prix fixe at about $50), but it's certainly worth the cost if you go with enough of an appetite.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I'm trying to get some things together for a friend's bachelorette party. Any suggestions on some "sex shops" I can hit up for fun gifts/games? I would prefer staying in DC, but anything metro-accessible would be great.

Julia: Embarrassed that I knew this one so quickly, but I'd try the Pleasure Place in Dupont or Georgetown and Night Dreams in Bethesda (next to the California Tortilla ). The salesgals in Night Dreams are very chatty; the could definitely help with bachelorette party ideas.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Any tips for a good coffeehouse in Alexandria that's relatively quiet and has good muffins?

Erin: St. Elmo's in Del Ray offers a huge variety of tempting muffins and other baked treats. Firehook Bakery is probably less comfortable if you're looking to hang out, but has some good things as well.

_______________________

Alexandria, Va.: Hello almighty GOGs! I'm posting way early since I'll be in a meeting later. This isn't really a "going out" question but I hope you can help. I recently had a falling out with my hair stylist over her creative vision (she envisioned me with plain, boring, nothing-exciting-to-it, one-length long hair and I did not). Can you recommend anyone creative who LISTENS to what a client wants in Alexandria who'd do well cutting long and extremely thick hair? I have the hardest time finding a good stylist! Thanks so much in advance for any suggestions.

Janet: I always hear good things about Sugar House Day Spa & Salon in Alexandria. I recommend calling and asking who would be the best person to deal with your thick, long hair. Then if it's not too much trouble, go in and talk to that person and see if you get a good vibe. It's a lotta leg work, but it could be worth it.

_______________________

Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: I was wondering what's your best recommendation or something to do on a Saturday morning/afternoon? My girlfriend and I work long hours and frequently resort to just sitting around watching TV because anything's better than working and because it takes less energy than trying to think of something fun to do. I feel like this is a recurring problem for us. Does anyone else feel the same way and how do you overcome it? Thanks!

David: Well, I mean, there's always the museums, where you can play fun games such as Which Piece in the Hirshhorn's Permanent Collection Would Look Best in Our Living Room or What Is the Least Deserving Artifact on Display at the American History Museum. Do you like music? Record shopping could be a good activity for a lazy Saturday. You could hop in the car and hit up Crooked Beat, Joe's Record Paradise, Revolution, Orpheus, even Tower. Head on over to Eastern Market, perhaps? How do you chatters spend your weekend mornings?

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Whatup Guru's...common problem here but can't get any good answers. Moved back to the area not too long ago and reconnected with some old friends. Would love to meet some new people though (girls mostly, but guys too) but don't know where to go. Not looking for sleazy pickups at bars but also not really into picking up trash at the park or a book group. Any suggestions?

Fritz: Good for you for putting yourself out there.

I have to say that I hear nothing but good things from people who use

MEETinDC

, a user-run organization that works something like this: You pick an activity you want to do (go see the Sam Gilliam exhibit, go to a DJ night, check out a movie), post it on the board, and other users can decide whether to join you or not. No cost, no pressure.

I have friends who are active in groups like the Smithsonian's Young Benefactors and the Corcoran's 1869 Society, which are, shall we say, an artier meet-and-greet scene. You should also check out the "young professionals" groups like Professionals in the City, Things to Do DC and Euronet International, which organize dinners at embassies, classes, trips to clubs and so on. They can be meet markets, but you'll meet new people and say that you had a chance to go to a cocktail reception at the Embassy of Finland.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus (aka the loves of my life),

My parents are coming to town this weekend and I have to trek all the way to Dulles to get them. My mom wants to hit up Tyson's on the way from the airport, any non-chain restaurant lunch-time suggestions for the Dulles or Tysons area?

Thanks!!!

Erin: What kind of place are you looking for? I like Coastal Flats in the Tyson's expansion.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I am a huge movie fan, but I feel like I haven't seen any of the nominated films. Where in DC can I catch a good double-feature of GG nominated movies this week? Bonus if the theater has something that counts as dinner.

Jen: Sounds like you're looking for a one-stop shop, which is tough. I'm not a fan of this theater, but the Loews Dupont is showing both "Capote" and "Brokeback Mountain," both of which should be big winners on Golden Globe Monday. If you don't mind Metro-ing between theaters, you could catch "Brokeback" at 4000 Wisconsin Ave. , then head to Landmark E Street for "Good Night, And Good Luck," "Transamerica" or "Match Point." (There are also lots of good places to eat near E Street.)

Either way, I think seeing "Brokeback Mountain" should be at the top of your list since I suspect it will snag at least a couple of major awards.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Speaking of the smoking ban, do the all-wise Gurus know if Tryst is considered a restaurant, and will thus be non-smoking pretty soon? I love hanging out there, but I hate that I reek of smoke after I leave. Thanks!

Fritz: Last time I checked, Tryst has a restaurant license. Then again, so many places in Adams Morgan have been switching to less-restrictive tavern licenses that it's hard to keep up.

_______________________

Washington, D.C. NW: Hi guys. Here's a new one for you: Many people have asked about hair stylists who specialize in cutting curly hair. I happen to be a woman in my 20's with very fine and thin hair. I'm looking for a stylist that will be sensitive to this situation and provide some guidance on hairstyles for my particular hair. Can you or your readers help????

Thanks.

Janet: I happen to like Bok at Paul Bosserman in Georgetown. He's a great hair cutter and in his off time he bartends at Creme Cafe in the U Street Corridor.

_______________________

Petworth, D.C.: Went to Vidalia last night for Restaurant Week and it was stellar. They had an expanded menu (w/supplemental charges for certain items), great service and a warm atmosphere. Kudos!

Erin: Yeah, I'm hearing rave reviews on Vidalia these days. I'm glad to hear that it treated you well.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Does Lucky Strike have a dress code for bowling?

Fritz: Yes -- a rather restrictive one that bans long white T-shirts, "excessively baggy" clothes, skull caps or athletic wear. Rhome and I agree that if you dress like someone who doesn't listen to rap music, you'll be fine.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: You all have talked about great places to eat brunch before, but I am looking for a good brunch DEAL, not necessarily the most amazing food. Preferably with a drink special involved (mimosas/bloody marys), where lots of young people hang out. Anywhere in DC or Virginia.

Anne: I can't vouch for the brunch food at these places (and I can't say I support the all-inclusive brunch concept), but I love their menu and atmosphere otherwise. Levantes has an airy, Mediterranean feel, and the buffet is 16.95, including champers. Vibrant and tropical Banana Cafe offers an $18.95 brunch deal with mimosas. Logan Tavern has an extensive bloody mary selection, and an a la carte brunch menu.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Sorry to ask, but I've exhausted all my resources. I did a search and it wasn't too helpful. Anyway, where's the best place in DC for a first-timer to get a brazilian wax? -runs and hides-

Thanks!

Janet: Skin Beauty Lounge gets raves.

_______________________

Silver Spring, Md.: So what's with the spot that used to house Red around the corner from Five. I heard rumblings of a new hip-hop spot or something opening there? Any idea what's opening there and when?

Fritz: DJ Dirty Hands is opening a new spot there called Fly this spring. It will be mostly hip-hop, and we hear rumors that the waitresses will wear stewardess uniforms.

_______________________

Fairfax, Va.: Hi

A good friend wants to celebrate her 30th B-day in Old Town Alexandria and we are trying to think of a place with great atmosphere/music, good food, a fantastic bar and a great 30 something crowd. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Erin: I think that Vermilion offers a good combination of those things without sacrificing the food. You can also hop down the street to Cafe Salsa .

_______________________

Maryland: Do guys have any ideas for a somewhat funky place for a wedding rehearsal dinner in or around Silver Spring? Our families are anti-stuffy and not too formal.

Jen: When you say funky and Silver Spring, my immediate thought is Jackie's, but they don't have a private room, unless I missed it.

Cubano's might be a fun choice, or what about Ceviche? (Again, I have no idea whether they host private parties, just trying to think of fun places for you to explore.)

If anyone has other ideas, by all means, speak up.

_______________________

Georgetown, D.C.: Hi GOGs! Thanks for the chat! I love them. I really hope you can help me out. I'm going to Sam & Harry's on Saturday night for a girls' night out (good start to the night). Is Sam & Harry's the type of place where I should wear a cocktail dress, or is it more of a black pants/fancy top type of place?

Thank you SOO much!

Janet: I really think you could go with either look at Sam & Harry's. Depends on what you feel most comfortable in. Of the two, cocktail dress is a bit more dressy and serious.

_______________________

Washington, D.C. : Hi all, quick question: does the new Clyde's in C'town have half priced wines on Sunday?

Erin: According to my sources, they don't.

_______________________

Brazilian wax seeker: I LOVE Van at Gaston (20th and L). She is very detailed oriented and not too pricey!

Janet: Another suggestion...

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hey Guys:

I live in the city and my boyfriend lives in Vienna, Va. Unlike our experience in the city, we have been unable to find good restaurants at a reasonable prices in this area of NOVA. Maestro and Colvin Run are wonderful, but we are looking for a neighborhood non chain restaurant where we go regularly without breaking the bank. We appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks!

Julia: Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant is a Tom Sietsema favorite. I don't know if a quick ride up Hunter Mill Road is too out of your way, but I love the Jasmine Cafe in Reston.

_______________________

Silver Spring, Md.: I've been hearing a lot about Mie N Yu lately - between the review in InStyle magazine and hearing that Nicole Kidman frequents there when she's in town. Is this place really all that fabulous? And if so, where's the best seat in the house? I'll be making a reservation this weekend...

Fritz: As I said in the InStyle piece, the bar is what's fabulous about Mie N Yu. The restaurant -- not so much. I don't think that highly of the food, but the cocktail list is interesting (and recently updated), DJs play a great mix of downtempo and house, and I really enjoy the Silk Road atmosphere and decor.

If I were you, I'd hit the bar first before deciding to have dinner there.

Re: Textbook resale: Check Amazon.com or Half.com - I bought books from both sites in college. S&H could be hefty, but it could be worth it depending on the value (Cost/Benefit Ratio - any finance books?!).

Julia: These sites and Craigslist were suggested for textbook-gal!

_______________________

U Street: I'm pretty up on D.C. indie rock, but I've yet to be able to get a handle on the hip hop scene. Can you recommend any good local acts (in the tribe, most def, talib kweli vein)? I caught a group I think was called RPM at a Katrina benefit awhile back and was definitely impressed. Where are the best venues to catch groups at?

Rhome: I'll drop a mention of this show in next week's Nightlife Agenda column. I would have included tomorrow's Beat Grinder in this week's episode but I just got the information. Beat Grinder is a hip-hop producers' battle similar to Philly's Beat Society showcases. You'll be able to see some of the current crop of the local scene and get more info about everyone's goings on. It takes place at Capital City Records and starts at 7 p.m. Keep an eye out for the monthly Hip-Hop Independents' Day showcases at Cap City also. They usually feature drawings for $50 worth of local music.

RPM is indeed dope. If you dig them you should check out Hueman Prophets at the 9:30 Club on Sunday.

David: Kev Brown and Head-Roc , who I mentioned in my year-end blog post , are well worth checking out. Food for Animals is pretty intense and great, too. I'm surprised Rhome didn't mention Priest da Nomad since it was his favorite local record of the year , but he's another one.

_______________________

Tavern City, D.C.: Please explain the difference between a tavern and a bar (at least in DC Council's opinion!).

Fritz: The difference in question is between a restaurant and a tavern; taverns don't make 45 percent of their gross profits from food and can have permanent dance floors.

There is no "Bar" license.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,

Going to the Improv for a show and would like a suggestion for a cool place to eat that's close by before the show. Thanks!

Anne: Panache is about the closest you can get, opening at 6 on Saturdays. There's a lot of clubby steakhouses nearby and other high end places; I don't know if the timing at those places fits in with your show or your mood. You can also eat at the Improv if you want -- it's set up like a dinner club with big communal tables. The food's not bad for what it is -- typical pubby items but also salads and an emphasis on burritos/tacos, etc.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hello Gurus,

Looking for a place to take a friend for her birthday party this weekend. K Street, Eye Bar, etc. are a bit pricier than we would like. Any fun places (on the level of Helix, Gazuza, etc.) that are still nice where we could show up with a group of 15 and enjoy good music and drinks? Thanks.

Fritz: Are you looking to just show up or make reservations? With 15, I'd pick the latter -- just to guarantee that half of your group won't be left standing out in the cold while everyone else gets in.

_______________________

Adams Morgan, D.C.: My mom is coming to visit me this weekend, and I was hoping to take her to a cool art museum event/exhibit (that's not a permanent exhibit that she would have seen during another visit to D.C.). Any suggestions? Thanks!

Erin: I am itching to get to the Andy Warhol exhibition before it closes in February. There are some beautiful shots at the free Wide Angle exhibition at National Geographic and Julia recommends " The Way We Worked ."

_______________________

Vegan Wallets: You can buy a really cool duct tape wallet from www.uncommongoods.com. I got my brother one last Christmas and he LOVES it!

Erin: I've seen those before and they're hot. I kind of want one.

_______________________

Restaurant Week: Some friends and I went to TenPenh on Monday for Restaurant Week. They offered most of their appetizers and all entrees. Rave reviews all around -- except from me. I am a vegetarian and the only option for me made my meal, had I ordered a la carte, cheaper than the $30.06. Just throwing that out there -- for other vegetarians out there, it's best to look at the original menu and prices. It might be cheaper other times.

Erin: I think that the passion food hospitality group (TenPenh, Ceiba, DC Coast, Acadiana) does a fantastic job with food (and server enthusiasm) during Restaurant Week.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: For the person looking for a wedding rehearsal spot around Silver Spring, I would suggest Mandalay. They have a private room and great food if one enjoys Burmese cuisine. It's also run by a really nice family. (And no I don't work for them in any way).

And to respond to the question of what people do on weekend mornings, perhaps the chatter should look into seeing a matinee in order to get out of the house? Less crowds and cheaper tickets.

Jen: Good thoughts; thanks for the suggestions.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Do you guys know if there are there are good comedy shows coming up?

David: Can't really vouch for the quality, but we talked about a couple of local comedy showcases in Nightlife Agenda this week. It's all local talent, so it's worth checking out at least once, right? The Improv's upcoming schedule doesn't seem too exciting. Does Colin Quinn even qualify as a comedian? Oh, Wanda Sykes is going to be at the Warner Theatre next month. They don't come much funnier than her.

Washington, D.C.: Does Oyamel in Arlington have a happy hour on Tuesdays and what is the deal with it?

Erin: From 4-7, they have classic margaritas ($4) and draft beers ($3), rail liquor and glasses of wine. They do little nibbles (like tacos) for $1.50.

Alexandria, Va.: Went to 100 King before Christmas. Totally different from Leb Tav. Food good, service good. Though they haven't gotten into a grove yet. Lost our reservation. They can't decide what their hours are to be on Sunday, etc. I will try them again soon.

Erin: Yeah, they're definitely still smoothing out issues in service. The hostess was directing servers to their respective tables when I was there last weekend, but it holds great promise.

Bethesda, Md.: Hey Gurus!

I just moved here and am curious to check out the Juste Lounge. I'm a big fan of blues and jazz. However, all of their promotional materials show African Americans. Would I look out of place or cause a problem? (I'm a Caucasian, my date is too.)

Thanks!

Rhome: I'm sure Juste would welcome your money which is just as green as everyone else's. He seems to like white folks . (I keeeed...) From over here it looks like they're aiming for a multi-culti crowd since Bethesda nightlife has been homogeneous for so long. I think that's a good trend and should be supported. If you're into good music and partying with a browner shade of Bethesda you should check it out. Your date might give you props for trying something different.

Arlington, Va.: Hello, Gurus! I have family coming to town to check out the Silver exhibition at the Renwick (which I had a small hand in putting together, incidentally). We'd like to grab brunch sometime on Sunday before we see the show. Any recommendations around the Renwick? Someplace not too expensive, and preferably with eggs benedict available (Mmmm.). I suppose we could always knock on the White House door and see what's cookin'....

Thanks ever so much!

Julia: Many of the spots downtown are closed on Sunday, unfortunately. If the White House doesn't work out for you, Old Ebbitt Grill isn't too far away and that is probably your best bet for Eggs Benedict -- though it can be a little more pricey. The service is much better there on the weekends. Check out our list of restaurants near the Renwick for more ideas.

National Zoo: My friend's birthday is this weekend and to end on a high note we are going to see Tai Shan on Monday afternoon and then drink away our holiday with our first annual baby panda bar crawl. Not knowing the area around the zoo that well, which bars are "musts" for our bar crawl??

Fritz: Monday afternoon.. Hmm. Depending on what time you go, most places may not be open -- Aroma, the Four Green Fields, Nanny O'Brien's and Dino don't start serving until 5.

So if you can hold off, I'd say cocktails at Dino, a martini or two at Aroma (say 'Hi' to Krishna for me), Guinness at Nanny's or the FGF or both. All are an easy walk away in Cleveland Park.

(If 5 is too late, the Zoo Bar across the street is a nice little dive with a new coat of paint, and Open City is Woodley Park's new favorite coffeeshop/bar/hangout for locals and conventioneers.

Used Text Books: I sold all my pharmacy school text books on Amazon.com and got a hefty penny for all of them as well. Mailing is easy as you can actually truthfully use the 'book rate' offered by the post office.

Goodluck!

Julia: Good idea about the book rate for the textbook seller. I sent my textbooks back from Australia that way.

Alexandria, Va.: Hello,I have a friend coming in to town on Sunday. She really likes art. Are there any good exhibitions or museums you'd recommend? She's been to the National Gallery before.

Thanks!

Anne: The Andy Warhol show is at the Corcoran, the Wide Angle photo exhibit is closing this month at National Geographic, and the National Museum of African Art's current show will surprise you. I'm fascinated by the rozome works at the Textile Museum.

Viridian: Just a note: Tom Sietsema says that Viridian's chef, wine consultant, and general manager are leaving, effective tomorrow. So, it might not be a good time to try Viridian, unless you can get in tonight.

Erin: Actually, that change is effective January 31, so there's still time to get in and I recommend that you do.

Arlington, Va.: This may be a bit of an odd question but I really need some help here! I am going to an 80's prom party this weekend and I CAN'T FIND A DRESS!!!! This is really frustrating me as I can't go to an 80's prom without an 80's dress. I'm looking for a place in NoVa. preferably. I've tried most of the Goodwill's in town and some out of the way places but there's either nothing or what there is doesn't fit. Any suggestions on cool thrift stores or vintage stores that don't stop at the 70's where I may be able to look?

Jen: I can't think of a place in NoVa, but you could try Meep's in D.C.; they may have a few things.

Another option: Buy some contemporary clothes and dress them to look more 80s. A foofy skirt with a fluorescent or off-the-shoulder top, some bangle bracelets and excessive eye shadow all smack of the '80s, but each piece can easily be found at a shopping mall. If anyone has the gall to bust on you for not having a "real" dress, tell them that if Andie from "Pretty in Pink" can make her own prom dress, so can you. (Then close by saying, "I just want everyone to know they can't break me.")

Yeah, I'm big on the movie quotes today.

Washington, D.C.: I want to go out and celebrate my b-day this Sunday night with a whole bunch of friends (since most people have Monday off). Any suggestions for fun Sunday night bars in the DC area- preferably metro accessible?

Thanks!

Fritz: How about the Prince-themed dance party at Chief Ike's, a pub quiz at Bedrock, Taint at DC9 or Sam "the Man" Burns at Dragonfly? All things that folks who have to be up nice and early on Monday often miss out on.

K Street NW, Washington, D.C.: Hey GOGs:

Thanks for taking my question. A group of 12(!) of us are going to Iota in Arlington on Friday night, and we want to go for a sit-down Mexican meal around 8PM somewhere near there. We just want a place where we can get a few drinks and chow that would be big enough to handle a crowd of that size. Doesn't have to be 5-star dining, and we'll make reservations. Any suggestions?

Erin: Well, Mexicali Blues offers the closest Mexican food. I prefer Taqueria Poblano, but that's a bit further afield.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus, I've been trying to hunt down a good scotch bar in town and hoped you could help. Thanks.

Fritz: The Flying Scotsman on the Hill. Best place I've celebrated Burns night in Washington.

For the person looking for a GG-nominated double feature: I know they wanted DC, but the Bethesda outlet of the Landmark Theatre chain is showing both Capote and Brokeback and is within a block of many decent restaurants including a number of spinoffs from downtown like Jaleo and Levantes. It's also right next door to Mon Ami Gabi.......mmmmmmm....mussels......

Jen: Excellent point. I was sticking to D.C. because that's what he/she requested, but Bethesda is an easy Metro ride. That theater is showing almost nothing but Golden Globe nominees ("Munich," "Match Point" and "Good Night, And Good Luck" are all there, too).

Georgetown U: Hi gurus! First of all, you saved my summer, I owe you one. Second, I'm looking for a reasonably priced relaxed happy hour place in the Cleveland park/zooish area, today if possible. Thanks!

Fritz: Today? I'd say Nanny O'Brien's is my favorite: beer and appetizer specials, if I remember correctly. I think the Cleveland Park Bar and Grill has good drink discounts, too.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Lady Gurus-

I asked this week and maybe you didn't answer because you didn't have time or just don't know....But, where can a girl find airbrush foundation services in DC? I need flawless skin for a ritzy gala coming up. Thanks!

Janet: Hi, WDC,

I could have sworn there were several places in D.C. that did airbrushing, but I've called at least 10 places who have said they don't. Anyone know for sure who does this in D.C.?

Washington, D.C.: Hi Guys,

I was trying to avoid the Restaurant Week hype since I've been on a diet (and doing quite well - down 22 lbs since November). But I love dining out - hence the diet - and I feel like it's time to reward myself. Tonight's probably the only free evening I'll have before Restaurant Week is over and I doubt I can find a date that quick. However, I don't mind dining alone if the place has a nice bar area - one that is set up for and gets a fair number of single diners. Eating at the bar seems less lonely than sitting by yourself at a table for two. Are there any Restaurant Week places that have a nice bar area for single diners? Thanks!

Erin: Acadiana has a nice bar area, you could probably eat at Cafe Atlantico's bar or maybe Palette.

Rockville, Md.: HELP!!!! Just moved to Rockville and can't find anything to do around here. Any advice on restaurants, or hang-out spots for the 20-something crowd?? Thanks, you rock!

Fritz: I've asked before and didn't get many answers beyond hanging out at the Orange Ball. Anyone have any suggestions?

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Do you have any suggestions for a smoke free bar, or bar with a decent non-smoking section, to watch the Redskins game this weekend? Thanks.

Fritz: Willie and Reed's in smoke-free Bethesda would be a great choice: Lots of televisions and seats. Caddies down the street would be a good choice as well.

Brunch: Don't forget Bombay Club, where $19 will buy you a great buffet, champagne, and a great pianist playing in the background.

Anne: Forgot to mention the piano at Banana Cafe, but here's another piano player.

Thanks for the chats!

Erin: Am I crazy for thinking that a cool toddler would love the kiddie area of the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show ?

Clarendon: Brunch on Sunday....Whitlows in Clarendon has an awesome brunch- all u can eat buffet and a la carte menu too that's very reasonably priced with lots to choose from. And a make your own bloody mary bar, but their house bloody is YUMMY. Always packed too.

Same thing with Front Page in Ballston, great buffet and menu and stellar make your own bloody mary bar...

Anne: More for the bloody mary aficionados.

Re: Out in the Cold: Thank you Fritz. We'll make reservations for that large birthday group. Any specific locales for this Saturday we should consider? Appreciate your help!!

Fritz: Hmm. 15. You might consider Gua-Rapo, Mantis -- what about that little back room at Bar Rouge? It's not as happening at Helix, but your group could get in.

Washington, D.C.: I'm having a birthday coming up (on a Thursday) and want to have a few friends come out with me for a dinner and drinks. I'm wanting to find a place in the Adams Morgan/Dupont area that isn't too pricey since I don't want to burden my friends with expenses. Some place with a great atmosphere and good drinks would be nice. Thanks!

Julia: For group dinners on the cheap side, my friends and I have done San Marco , Luna and Lauriol Plaza . Busboys and Poets is a little out of your way, but that's a really good bet for a big group as well. If you're willing to spend a little more cash, give Merkado Kitchen in Logan Circle a try. I just had the best group dinner I've had in months there a few weeks ago.

Rockville, Md.: Hi! Just wanted to say I've been to IndeBleu and Taberna del Alabardero for Restaurant Week thus far. IndeBleu was great, I really loved the food and the experience. Taberna was a bit of a let down because I've heard such good things about their dishes, yet was not wowed. It may be due to the limited menu they offered. Just my two cents.

Erin: Yeah, Taberna is like the kind of place where I have to have the full menu at my disposal to truly enjoy it. I'm glad to hear that you liked IndeBleu -- I've heard grumblings from people who wish they would expand the RW offerings.

Silver Spring, Md.: The woman who wanted a good place in Silver Spring for a rehearsal dinner might try Mi Rancho as well. Terrific Mexican food, fun atmosphere, and while I don't know if there is a private room, the restaurant is huge, so they might be able to just cordon off a section of it.

Erin: Take note, rehearsal party-planner.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: where would the best place be to watch the 'skins game this weekend?

Fritz: How about placeS?

The Arlington Cinema and Draft House and the State Theatre are both showing the game for free on giant movie screens, lessening the chance you'll be stuck behind some dude's head.

Mister Days in Clarendon has Redskins cheerleaders (ah, the advantages of an away game) and discount pitchers of beer. Get there early for seats.

Eastern Market: Marty's on 8th Street is another smoke-free bar with TV's a plenty.

Fritz: "A plenty?" I think I remember a couple.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus, I read on some web site that Lulu's has a college party going on Thursday nights, but the calendar on their official site only mentions Friday. What's the best night to go to there?

Fritz: How about Saturday? The cast of the Real World Austin is going to be there! For only $15 -- $5 more than regular admission -- you can hang out in the "VIP" room with them!

Bored in Chevy Chase, Md.: Hello GOG,

Submitting early, hopefully you get to this one. I'm trying to find a cabin rentals for this weekend, within 2 hours drive max. Every place I've found it's about 5-7 hours. I want to go away for the weekend, not spend it in the car! Any suggestions? Shenandoah Valley or WV?

Many thanks in advance!

Anne: Berkeley Springs isn't so far, and there's even a site to tell you what cabins have openings . Check this site, and browse the Escapes column or Virginia and West Virginia archives to get ideas for more little getaway towns that don't require driving all day.

Adams Morgan, D.C.: Hi GoG's!

Okay, so the family is coming in two weeks and have mentioned that if it's a nice day they want to see Rock Creek Park...I drive the Parkway every day to/from work, but I don't know any of the park above the Connecticut Ave exit... we'll want to do some driving, some walking... where do we go? How do we get there??

Thanks so much!

Julia: Follow Beach drive North from the Connecticut Ave. exit and you can park at a picnic grounds by the intersection of Tilden/Park Road and Beach Drive. (Turn left once you see the the Pierce Mill on the left side of the road). From there, if you walk toward the Zoo (back the way you came), you can see what I consider to be the coolest part of the park -- trails, bridges, random monuments to a French diplomat. Well worth the trip.

20010: Fritz,

Any word on a cask tonight at the Reef? Do you know any other interesting beer-things this weekend?

Thanks!

Fritz: It's Czar from the Avery Brewer in Colorade. I'm told it's a hefty Russian Imperial Stout -- owner Brian Harrison says it's "super rich" with "lots of roasted malts."

Nothing else beery going on this weekend that I'm aware of.

Washington, D.C.: Does Andalu still have the "Global Tuesdays" hip-hop night? I was in the area a couple of times and didn't see anybody there.

Also, what would be your top choices for Thursday night (tonight)? I'm looking for a big college crowd. Thanks

Rhome: It seems like Andalu is only as good as its promoters these days and I'm not sure there's any consistency. I think what you're looking for is over at Eyebar on Tuesdays now.

Your choices for tonight aren't legion but Platinum or Love should give you what you need.

Washington, D.C.: So, it's my birthday this weekend and I'm looking for a place to go out for post-dinner drinks on saturday night with about 8-10 people. Most of the group is in their late 20s, early 30s, but my mother and aunt are also coming out, which kind of makes this task challenging. They're two hip chicks, no doubt, but i don't want to take them to some overly crowded place with a bunch of college kids. I'd like a loungey, more grown-up place where we can get some sort of table and possibly listen to some good (not overpowering) tunes.

We'll be done with dinner by 9:30, which I'm hoping will make the task easier. We were shooting for Adam's Morgan, just b/c it's easy to move around if one place is too crowded, but I'm up for any area. Any suggestions? Any places where I can reserve a table without buying a $500 bottle of liquor? Am I dreaming????

Fritz: There just aren't that many loungey "adult" places in Adams Morgan, sad to say. You might do better down in Dupont or U Street. I'd suggest Eighteenth Street Lounge, the new Science Club, Helix, maybe Chi-Cha Lounge? If it's early enough, you'll be fine at all those places.

20009: OK GOGs, so far in today's chat you've quoted "Say Anything" and "Pretty in Pink". Please complete the '80s movie trifecta by working in a good quote from "Risky Business" or "Sixteen Candles", starting..NOW!

Julia: I don't believe this, 20009. I've got a trig midterm tomorrow, and I'm being chased by Guido the killer pimp.

Silver Spring, Md.: Gurus:

I badly broke my ankle over the holidays and am just now feeling up to going out. I am still on crutches.

I can easily see a movie or play but am a little more cautious about going to bars/lounges. I'm looking for chilled out places with seating (and a bathroom on the same level). I used to frequent Aroma (short on seating), Quarry House (no go b/c of stairs), and Chi Cha (super crowded doesn't make hobbling easy). I will go back to my usual haunts in 6 weeks but in the interim...?

Fritz: From a friend who recently got off crutches after tearing a muscle in her leg:

"Aroma was very crutch-friendly. The bartenders are aware of what's going on in the bar and will make sure that you're okay. Just get there early enough to snag a stool. The Lush level of the Reef was good early on a Saturday night, but as things got more crowded it was hard to hobble to the bathroom and the door to leave.

I was offered a seat at Bar Pilar. I was told that the one empty stool at Bistrot du Coin belonged to a guy's friend, but he offered to let me use it while his friend was in the bathroom. Thanks.

Mostly, plan to go out early because even the nicest people become less aware of their surroundings after a few drinks and tapping people on the ankles to get through a crowd because they didn't hear you say "excuse me" gets tiresome."

Washington, D.C.: Where's the best place in the District to watch the Redskins game on Saturday? Preferably a place with a fun crowd and cute guys, but not too insane.

Fritz: Most places in D.C. with more than one TV will have the game on. I avoid ESPN Zone as much as possible. How about Cleveland Park Bar and Grill, Rhino Bar, Ventnor Sports Cafe, Porter's, the Pour House or Lucky Strike (plenty of seating and big screens)?

_______________________

Washington, D.C.-AM: Gurus,

Ever heard of a place called BLANK Bar and Loungeh and what type of place it is?

Rhome: That sounds like this place on 18th in Adams Morgan that I just wandered into a couple of months ago because I was curious... and because it was called Blank.

It's a tiny shoebox decorated in all white. Small bar and smaller dance floor in the front, seating area in the back. Got a weird vibe. The owner was an odd fellow.

BTW, what's a better name for an establishment, Blank or Drinx?

Going Out in Rockville: For the 20-something, I would suggest either heading north (Gaithersburg) or south to Bethesda. G-burg has the infamous JJ Muldoons as well as the new Dogfish Head Ale House, Summit Station Brewpub and the bar at the Last Mango. Bethesda.......well being as I'm from G-burg I don't get out in Bethesda much, but I remember they do have their fair share of bars/clubs.

Fritz: Thanks.

Washington, D.C.: In the Nightlife Agenda, you mention that the Yacht Club, Stoney's, and Vida are closing this weekend. Why no love for John Harvard's? Sunday is their last night. Granted, it wasn't the most happening place, but it still warrants mentioning I think.

Fritz: Uhhhh... because I thought they had a few weeks to go? It's my bad.

Anyone who likes JH beer -- and I do, on occasion -- there are no specials this weekend, but they need people to kill those kegs.
