Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's City Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. washingtonpost.com: Hello, Washington! Welcome to Got Plans? You all psyched for the Anselm Kiefer Opening Party tonight? I know I am. Anyway, we've got a full crew today: Fritz, Erin, David, Anne, Jen, Janet, Rhome and me (Julia) are all ready to answer your questions. Let's get this party started.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: My Dad wants to have dinner in Georgetown next Wednesday, followed by a drink at Mr. Smiths (his old haunt), any suggestions? Birreria Paradiso is the only new place I can think of. (Mom wanted to try Agraria, but since it was recently father's day and all it got vetoed)
Erin: If your dad's a beer-drinker, the cozy Birreria is probably a good bet. Mendocino Grille is one of my favorite places on M St. Does the place have to be new? While it's not exactly Georgetown, the Blue Duck Tavern (at 24th and M) fully opens its doors tomorrow and it's delicious. There are soft shell crabs, huge hunks of beef and amazing pickled spicy tomatoes. It's not more than a 10 minute walk up to Mr. Smith's from there.

Arlington, Va.: Hi GoGs. I'm in the market for someone new to cut/color my hair. The old guy has stopped listening to what I want plus it's a bit pricey. Has anyone heard anything about Paul Mitchell The School in Tysons 1? Students do your hair for reduced prices which helps my wallet but I don't want a bad haircut either.
Janet: Anyone out there tried Paul Mitchell The School? Good experience or not?

Maryland/D.C. Metro: So this weekend is the "D.C. Carnival" or Caribbean festival, or whatever it is called around here. Where can I go that will have spirit of the party, without all of the madness? Not the usual hangouts with the long lines and overly packed dance floors. I'm looking for more of a relaxed atmosphere with a breath of the Caribbean vibe appropriate for the weekend. Maybe somewhere where I can get a drink, possibly relax in a couch and listen to some Dub Music. Help me if you can...
Fritz: While I'd really like to see Byron Lee at Zanzibar on Saturday night, that place is going to be crazy. Not sure if even my "Dr. No"-loving self will make it down to the Waterfront. Instead, after the party on Georgia Avenue, keep the island vibe flowing with a tall, cool Dark & Stormy cocktail at the Islander on U Street. They have dub on weekends, though it can be kind of loud.

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: How is Fritz given the conclusion of the U.S./Ghana game? (My buddy is at Bedrock Billiards drinking away his sorrows.)
David: Fritz "Benedict Arnold" Hahn was actually rooting for Ghana. Do you believe that?! So he's happy with the result. You know that Fritz thinks he's European, so he's pulling for all of those countries over the U.S. anyway.

Crystal City, Va.: Where can I find some high end baby clothes? Been to the big baby stores like Babies 'R' Us and they just have the ordinary. Cute things but not great. Does Neiman Marcus have a baby department? Looking for a birthday gift for my soon to be one-year-old niece, but something high end that would be suitable for Trump's kid. Thanks.
Jen: I think Neiman Marcus does have a baby department, and Saks might, too. So you could check those two places. I'd also recommend baby boutiques, like Piccolo Piggies in Georgetown or Bethesda. There's also a new baby shop in downtown Bethesda called Wiggle Room, not far from the Daisy Baby store. Both of those might be worth a look.

Washington, D.C.: Hi GoGs: I am desperate for your help. I need to find a place for next Saturday, for 3 of us to get pedicures at the same time. I wanted to class it up a bit from my usual neighborhood place and hit Sugarhouse in Old Town, or Elizabeth Arden, but they are both booked solid. We'll be celebrating a birthday and we'll have an out of town guest. Any suggestions for nicer places, maybe not as mainstream as the one's I've mentioned? Oh, Old Town would be great. Thank you!
Janet: How about Circe Aveda ?
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: I've heard about a place called 201 Lounge near Union Station. Can you tell me more about it: atmosphere, drinks, etc? Thanks!
Fritz: 201 is the closest thing Capitol Hill has to an upscale martini lounge. It's dressy, the furniture has an old-school retro look (big round booths in the corners), and the cocktails are huge and (usually) well-made. Check it out on Tuesdays when the martinis are half-price, so you'll only pay $5-$6.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: I'm submitting this early because I have to be at a meeting... but still, please oh please, pick me!
A friend just gave me tickets to see 7x7 at the Washington Ballet this weekend. My problem: what should my husband and I wear? Since it's held at the school, does that change anything? What do people wear to the ballet nowadays, anyway?
Janet: Dress codes are pretty fluid these days, so you can pretty much wear what you want. That said, it's a lovely event and it's on a weekend, so I'd suggest stepping up the effort above jeans and a T-shirt.
_______________________
I know you guys have talked about this before...: but I'm hoping you'll take some pity on me and tell me a bit about the Happy Hour at McCormick and Schmicks. I'm supposed to be going tomorrow to the one in Chinatown. What's it like? What are these $2 appetizers people speak of? Thanks!
Fritz: I really like the M&S happy hour, though it's not an endless parade of drink specials. In fact, there's not a one. But here's the deal: You get to order from a $1.99 appetizer menu, which can include half-pound burgers, bowls of mussels, huge salads, etc. The only catch is that you get the drink with a two-drink minimum. Still, even that way -- two beers and a burger should only set you back $12 plus tip, which is an absolute steal.

McLean, Va.: Hi Gurus!
My mom is visiting and this is her first time to DC. I want to take her to a nice restaurant (but would like to get out of there for no more than $100), but I have no clue where as I haven't lived here long. The thing is she is a vegetarian and I love my meat (also she isn't super adventurous on ethnic foods). A place with a good view would be great too (but not a must).
Thanks!
Erin: Does that include wine? If not, Nora is a pleasant, but upscale organic spot. Viridian caters to both preferences and has a bit of outdoor seating. Cafe Divan in Georgetown is also a thought.

Washington, D.C.: Hi there! Do any of you have any experience with the circulator buses? I have some friends from out of town coming in this weekend so we will be heading down to the mall for some touristy fun and I was wondering if this was a good way to get around? I've looked at their Web site but would love more info/any first hand experience? How often do the buses come?, etc. Thanks gurus!
Julia: My friend worked for the Downtown BID when it was developing the Circulator bus, so I heard about the hype for months before it actually launched. I've only taken the Union Station to Georgetown Circulator , but I think it's really helpful. Gets at a route that the Metro doesn't do so well.
Anyway, the busses are subject to backups like every other Washington bus, but they usually come every ten minutes. Pretty decent way to get around downtown. I saw people piling on them along the Mall a few weekends ago. It's also a great way to get down to the
, which is a great place to take your out-of-town friends in the summer.
_______________________
Bethesda, Md.: Do you need to order tickets ahead of time for the French Embassy's Fete de la Musique?
Fritz: I would order my Fete de la Musique tickets in advance. First, they're cheaper ($12 vs. $15 at the door), and you never know if this event is going to sell out. If you buy the tickets ahead of time, you've guaranteed yourself a seat inside. Champagne and live music sounds like a winning combo, n'est-ce pas?

Birthday Party!: I'm trying to plan my 30th birthday party. My friends want to do the normal restaurant/bar thing, but I want something more unique. One idea was to rent out a picnic shelter at a Regional Park for the day...but friends are complaining because alcohol isn't allowed. Do you all have any unique ideas that jump out at you? Thanks so much!
Jen: I have an idea that could combine the picnic concept and the alcohol: Set up an afternoon of winery touring in Va. wine country. I was out that way not too long ago and saw at least one party at Oasis Vineyards that was celebrating a birthday -- they had rented a limo and reserved a table at the vineyard so they could hang out, picnic and taste some wines. I'm not sure how expensive that would be, especially if you have a lot of people involved, but it's an option.
You also could rent a picnic shelter for a late afternoon lunch/early dinner, then head out for drinks afterward. That's a nice, easy and inexpensive compromise.

Washington, D.C.: Due to the sweltering summer that's already upon us, I'm looking for a guide to hotel pools (i.e., ones you can pay for day use of). I know WaPo used to have one, but I can't find it. Can you all help? Thanks!
Anne: I don't know of many hotel pools that are keen on this, actually, and the ones that offer it charge a hefty fee. What's wrong with following Mayor Williams's cannonball into a community pool? Have to been to Georgetown's pool in Volta Park?
_______________________
Arlington, Va.: I'm thinking of going to Fort Reno tonight (weather providing). Do you know anything about the bands who are playing? Thanks.
David: Sure hope they get tonight's show in, it'd be a bummer to start the season off 1 for 3. I like tonight's bill. Greenland is a three-piece indie rock band, sorta reminds me of Joy Division, the Walkmen, a little "dark" but still catchy. Our intern Molly adores them. Mess Up the Mess is lots of fun, kind of hyperactive, dancey girl punk. Hope for sunshine, or at least something far away from what happened on Monday.
_______________________
Birthday Dinner: My husband is flying in from overseas for my birthday. We want to get dressed up and go somewhere nice with outdoor seating. We aren't big foodies, the times we've tried (Mark and Orlando's, Ardeo) we've been underwhelemed. Can you recommend a place that might work for us? Thanks!
Erin: Oh, that's so sad. You should give Ardeo another chance sometime. I think it's pretty wonderful these days. Anyway, how about Taberna del Alabardero , Marcel's or even dressing up for the roof at Perry's? If you're looking to kick it up a notch, 2941 has a small terrace.

Washington, D.C.: Guys, necesito ayudo (that's Spanish for "need help"). New to town and have a date with a girl (Friday) who has lots of Cuban music on her iPod, but doesn't know how to salsa. As an American of Cuban descent, I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't either. Where can we go have a great, fun second date, learn how to salsa, and dance all night? Muchas gracias.
Fritz: Estoy aqui. Two suggestions for you: Habana Village is the one that gets plenty of nods from salsa heads, because the DJs are quite good, dance instructors are reliable and the mojitos are strong and delicious. I'm not sure whether it's the best place for beginners, though, because the crowd is pretty experienced.
At the moment, I'm partial to the Friday night salsa parties at Caribbean Breeze in Ballston, which I recently reviewed -- a fun crowd and instructors who take time with beginners. You can grab dinner there before the dancing starts, too.

Washington, D.C.: Trying to impress a girl coming in from London over the Fourth of July weekend. Was looking for some great non-mainstream Jazz clubs. Anything come to mind?
Rhome: Cafe Nema, Utopia, HR-57. The perennial favorites. Some jazz heads were asking about Federico Gonzalez Pena (Google him) a few weeks back in this chat. I was sitting up in Nema asking some of the fellas that exact same question (any of y'all seen Freddie lately?) when I heard some familiar voicings and rhythms coming from the keyboardist. I sez to my friends, "wow that dude sounds like Freddie."
He just happened to stroll in and sit in on a few tunes that night after being on the road with Chris Botti.
One of my other favorite stories is walking in on Roy Hargrove blowing the roof off of Utopia after a Blues Alley gig.

Springfield, Va.: Hey GOGs! I want to surprise my boyfriend for our 3 year anniversary and take him out somewhere completely unique and original. We've gone to Old Town, Georgetown, Downtown, etc. more times than I can count and I'd love to take him somewhere new. We're both big fans of the outdoors (for hiking, eating, etc) and not so much on the club/downtown scene. Any ideas for something really special?
Jen: I'm not sure this qualifies as particularly original, but have you thought about going to Great Falls? I recently visited after an extremely long hiatus and was struck by what a special place it is. On a nice day, you could picnic outside then go for a good, long hike.
If you want to make your anniversary extra-special and turn it into a weekend-long celebration, there are tons of places you could go for a short vacation: the Eastern Shore or elsewhere along the Chesapeake Bay, West Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley ... that might be your best bet if you really want to break out of the mold. Not that there's anything wrong with the mold...

Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus,
What can you tell me about Club Venus on K Street, NE? I drive by it every day and can't seem to find anything online.
Also, have any of you been to Bar Nun on Saturday night for Entre Nous? Super sketchy or somewhat seductive?
Thanks!
Rhome: No knowledge here about Venus. Fritz? Chatters?
Sketchy is in the eye of the beholder is it not? It's about as risque as you would expect but not swarmy. Definitely not for delicate sensibilities though.
Fritz: I've heard about Venus. Mostly hip-hop shows, from what I've seen. Haven't been yet, though; the flyers said something like "Off North Capitol Street behind the Kentucky Fried Chicken," which doesn't make it sound too promising -- but we'll see.

Arlington, Va.: I need a reputable, but reasonable, jeweler to re-string my pearls. Where in DC/Arlington/Alexandria should I go?
Janet: Boone & Sons has locations in McLean, Chevy Chase and D.C., and my experience with them has always been good.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Re: the Circulators-- they are great!! They come -much- more regularly/frequently than the city buses (I know from sad experience waiting on the D6 on K St. and watching Circulator after Circulator go by every 5 min, even during the rushiest of rush hours). They are nice to ride on (again, compared to city busses) and get you where you are going in good stead. Thumbs up on the Circulator!
Julia: More on the big red bus.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Why are 201 Lounge and Union Pub both listed as 201 Mass Ave NE? Is one upstairs, like Pour House?
Fritz: No. They're around the corner from each other -- entrance to 201 is downstairs on Second Street SE, while door to Union Pub faces Mass Ave -- but part of the same building, hence the same mailing address. They share an owner, too.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Good baby things can be found at Dawn Price on 7th/Eastern Market. It's not Babies R Us prices, but I didn't want to pass out either. Fun little extras/toys around too for baby gifts.
Jen: Our reader suggested she wanted to get something Trump's kid could wear, which may mean she's only looking for places with prices that require smelling salts. But I think this is a good tip and a place where she might find a truly unique gift.
Thanks.

Washington, D.C.: Hi gurus-
I'm headed to see "Charlie Victor Romeo" on Sunday night at the Studio Theatre. It looks a bit disturbing, so I'm thinking that since it's a date, dinner might be better before the 7 p.m. show rather than after (around 9ish). Do you have any suggestions in the area or reviews of the play? Thanks!
Erin: I didn't go to see that play, but I hear that (thanks to transcripts from real crashes) it's pretty realistic. Right in that area, Merkado Kitchen is fun fusion cuisine. Rice is just across the street with Thai food and Viridian is up the block. They're three solid bets. If you're willing to walk a few blocks, you can also eat an early meal at Cafe Saint-Ex.
_______________________
Silver Spring, Md.: Hello Gurus! I'm hoping you can help me out. Two of my friends are I are planning a ladies night out. Sadly its been a while since we've hit the town. In our younger days we spent a lot of Adams Morgan, but we're looking for something different. We plan on starting the night out at Tabaq for dinner and drinks. Any recommendations for other places nearby in the U St. area we can hit for drinks and possibly some dancing? I'd prefer not to end up spending a lot on cover charges. We aren't too picky on ambiance, but we are planning to put our party dresses on, so we would likely be out of place at a dive. Thank you so very, very much!
Rhome: Good dancing can be found at Jin along with pricey drinks. Liv at Bohemian Caverns is doing a mainstream hip-hop/R&B/dancehall thing on Saturdays now. It should be like Love and the rest without the rigamorole at the door.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Hi GOGs, I'm looking for a bar with a patio for a fun Friday happy hour (along with everyone else in the world). I love the rooftop at Reef, but it bums me out when it's at the crowd limit and they won't let anyone else up there. Any ideas? What do you think of the patios at Larry's Lounge or Stetson's? I'm more than willing to trek beyond Adams Morgan for a laid-back bar with cheap beer and a good patio. Thanks!
Fritz: The back patio at Stetson's can be a gem, and it's relatively secluded (I had to have someone show me how to find it the first time I went), but it fills up on the weekends. Still, it's always worth a shot.
Larry's patio is small and often crowded -- it's just a couple of plastic chairs on 18th Street -- but I have a soft spot for the place. Very friendly crew of locals of all ethnicities, though predominantly gay, and while the staff can be a little slow, they're pleasant and accommodating.
Another suggestion: The patio at L'Enfant.
_______________________
Arlington, Va.: Can you give more information or a link to the Fete de la Musique please?
Fritz: Time for the weekly "Remember to read Nightlife Agenda every Thursday" comment. Our tips -- including a write-up, link and schedule for the Fete de la Musique -- are here .
_______________________
Baby Clothes: I can't remember the name... but I found some adorable high end baby clothes in a store right across from the Whole Foods in Clarendon.
Jen: Yes, another good tip. I know exactly the store you mean and for the life of me, I can't remember the name. But it's on Wilson Blvd., not far from the equally cutesy pet store whose name I cannot recall either.
Should we change the name of this chat to "Got Plans? with the Going Out Gurus, Who Can't Remember a Damn Thing"? It's a longer title, but I think it's got zip.
_______________________
Alexandria, Va.: Need new options ~ we're going out with a few friends on Saturday and as much as we love the them - we've done Lauriol and Zaytinya to death. Got any recommendations for something that shares the goodness of both of those places (great food, great atmosphere) that's off the beaten path?
Erin: Is there anything that's really off the beaten path these days? So are you looking for a crowded spot? Have you tried Oyamel, Zaytinya's Crystal City sister? I love the margaritas and patio there.
In Old Town, you might be into 100 King or the patio at Taverna Cretekou. Tandoori Nights above Bertucci's in Clarendon has solid Indian food and a nice bar area. Bourbon in Adams Morgan might be another destination and I assume you've been to Tabaq.
_______________________
Craftytown: Oh, Great Gurus... I'm feeling crafty this weekend - are there any metro-accessible craft stores that sell fabric and frames and all that fun stuff? Especially fabric - I don't need high quality, and would prefer cheaper. I need to cover some large blank walls in my apartment. Thanks!
Julia: You'd have to walk a bit from the Metro, but Bruce Variety in Bethesda is amazing for this kind of project. The fabrics are cheap and the designs are cool. Don't think they have much in the "frames" department, but I'm telling you, you won't go wrong with the fabric. G Street Fabric isn't too far from the Rockville metro either, but then you'd have to walk along Rockville Pike and through big suburban parking lots, which would be kind of annoying.
There's a fabric store on K Street, too, but I think they're kind of pricey and may not be open on weekends.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Gift-giver --> check out K baby on M Street in Gtown.
Jen: Thanks for this, too.
I'm starting to think we've all been to one too many baby showers...
_______________________
Not Paul Mitchell, But...: I've gone twice now to the new Aveda Institute and have absolutely LOVED it. $18 for a cut (not sure how much for color, but it was cheap!) and a lovely head massage and makeup application included! I can't rave about it enough!
Janet: Another option for the person in search of a haircut at Paul Mitchell The School.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Big weekend, lots of two day events. Old Dominion Beer Fest, National Barbecue Battle, Booz Allen Classic, etc. What would you all reccomend?
David: It is an especially busy weekend, and would be a major bummer if it rained the whole time. I'm partial to the Beer Festival on Saturday because the Waco Brothers and Robbie Fulks is a great bill, and I prefer beer to meat . If you're up for a short drive, there a couple of fun options up in Annapolis: Eastport-a-Rockin' , with lots of food and music (including current faves, elementary school rockers Eyeball Skeleton) and you know you're intrigued by the Mid-Atlantic Ukulele Invitational . Not to mention all the Caribbean Carnival stuff going on.

Birthday Girl: Hi Guys,
So I turn 26 tomorrow. Eeek. I plan to celebrate with 7 or 8 girl friends. We have decided to go to Zaytinya for dinner and then thought we might go to Blue Gin and then Modern. This crowd usually frequents Daily Grill and Town Hall and waterfront so we wanted to try something different. Think this plan makes sense. Thanks so much!!!
Fritz: Yeah, that sounds like a good plan to me. May want to consider going to Modern first if you don't have a table reservation, though, because capacity is much smaller than Blue Gin's and you don't want to get stuck in line.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: We're planning a dinner for eight people who haven't seen each other in a while. We're looking for a restaurant in the Adams Morgan/Dupont/U Street area that is fun and hip, but not too loud so we can catch up. Any ideas?
Erin: I've already recommended it this chat, but I'll go ahead and throw out Al Crostino again. You could sit upstairs with a group that size and hear each other pretty well.
Heritage India on Connecticut below the circle might work out, Sette Osteria and Bistrot du Coin are also good spots to accommodate groups.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: I'm moving to Africa in a few months and want to learn Swahili...any place in the area that offers classes?
Anne: Georgetown's School of Foreign Service offers it, but I think the summer class already started. You might try asking at a place like the Embassy of Kenya or the Peace Corps, to see what language instructors they recommend. Any Swahili speakers have suggestions?
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Didn't get a chance to ask Tom this yesterday, but a friend and I are going to see a band in the U Street area tomorrow night and want to grab a bite to eat beforehand. Can you recommend anywhere around U Street/Logan Circle (maybe even Dupont) where we could get yummy healthy food (she's craving a good salad) and a great beer/wine selection? Thanks!
Erin: The best wine selection in that area is Al Crostino , but it wouldn't fit the health food bill. Simply Home has a nice, light salad and great steamed dishes. Coppi's might be a good place. Also, you can get massive salads at Busboys and Poets.
_______________________
High End Baby Clothes:: Jacadi at Tysons Galleria can't be beat - very Frenchy.
Janet: Agree -- Jacadi is very French; another option in the Tysons area is Oilily -- a Dutch manufacturer with lots of colorful, whimsical clothes. They even offer some choices for mothers.
_______________________
Charlottesville, Va.: Hello, I live in Cville but work in the D.C. area. This weekend my wife is coming up and we are looking for a place to hang out in Adams Morgan. One that has decent food, drinks (especially Margaritas) that are cheap/moderate, and plays either hip hop, reggae/dancehall or top 40. Any recommendations we can check out? Thank you!
Rhome: You should probably split up your food, drinking and dancing agendas into separate venues. Everything is in walking distance anyway. My favorite spot to eat with a date and get some ambiance is Soussi. For the type of dancing scene you're looking for... hmmm...
Lacking in cheese and crazy crowds but can get funny style with line, dress code and cover: Saki, Chloe, Anzu.
More eclectic, less mainstream: Bossa.
Bangin-est reggae on the whole 18th Street strip: Bukom.
_______________________
K St., Washington, D.C.: I need to have a never-before-worn blazer tailored. I don't need anything fancy, just a good reliable tailor in the Dupont Circle area. I know you have probably answered this question before but I would really appreciate the help if possible. Thanks.
Janet: Try Imperial Valet at 1331 Connecticut Ave. NW.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Dear Gurus! Any word on whether the new Hotel Palomar in Dupont will be sporting a super chic, fun new bar along the lines of the other Kimpton hotels?
Fritz: I've heard it's going to be more "grown up" than Helix. Latest opening date I've heard is July 15.
Speaking of hotel bars, though -- Blue Duck Tavern is crazy beautiful, and the menu is stacked with old-school cocktails.
_______________________
L Street, Washington, D.C.: Hi GOGs,
Any recommendations for a venue where 8 adults and one toddler could head to for a leisurely and preferably outdoor eating-with-drinks experience... The group consists of 2 vegans, 4 vegetarians and 3 omnis. Thanks for any suggestions!
Erin: I'm thinking Grill from Ipanema , Lebanese Taverna or Savory Cafe .
_______________________
SilverSpring/Forest Glen, Md.: Hi GOGs, My wife and I were going to go camping this w/e, but were deterred by the possible t-storms. We don't want the w/e to pass us by while we hem/haw about what to do or just do the usual dinner/drinks--any suggestions for something out of the ordinary? We were thinking maybe a wacky exhibit at a museum or gallery. Thanks and you guys rock!
Julia: If you're going for offbeat exhibits, I'd go for Anselm Kiefer , the exhibits and Hemphill and McCallum and Tarry at Conner Contemporary. The exhibit at the Warehouse is pretty wacky too.
If you want something a little more mainstream,
is a fantastic exhibit.

Across the Street from McCormick and Schmicks: What is this happy hour you speak of? What days does it take place on and is it at all of their locations? I work across the street from their K Street location.
Fritz: From our lovely Interns Guide :
"McCormick and Schmick's on K Street has a great happy hour menu, featuring half-pound burgers with fries, bowls of mussels, fresh salads and sandwiches for just $1.95 from 3:30 to 6:30, although you do have to purchase two drinks."
I was just there a few weeks ago and had the burger plus two Sierra Nevadas, and my pre-tax/tip total was around $12.

Bethesda, Md., re: baby clothes: Not to be annoying, but a thought - as a new mom who received a ton of beautiful, pricey baby clothes as gifts, I am very thankful but a bit guilty. My baby wears them 2-3 times, spits up on them, outgrows them. instead of giving a super pricey outfit, why don't you spend half as much on something super cute at a regular store, and give the other half to a charity for poor children who can't afford any clothes? Or, make a donation of pricey baby formula to a food bank? I am giving away almost all of my high-end baby clothes.
Jen: This is not annoying at all, and a very good point.
I'm convinced that some gift-givers (not all, but a few) just want to make the best impression possible at a baby shower, which may not always mean they're giving the most practical present.
We've all been there, right? You grab the registry at the last minute and realize the only unpurchased items are a really expensive breast pump and a few packs of nipples for a baby bottle. I can't speak for everyone, but I hate being the person who comes to the shower with a wrapped box of nipples. Then the mom sits there, opening these elaborate baskets and boxes filled with plush puppies and itty bitty Easter dresses. And she gets to yours and she's like, "Oh. Bottle nipples. Gee, thanks."
But I suspect the mom-to-be needs those more than she needs a beautiful baby sweater that, as you point out, will get yuked on after approximately 10 seconds.
All of which is a long way of saying that giving nice gifts is great, but maybe it's wise to mix in something practical, too.

Washington, D.C.: HELP!! I'm celebrating an occasion with friends tomorrow night and need a bar to go to after dinner. Someplace fun and not too young in the Penn Quarter. Six 30-somethings would thank you heartily for any suggestions.
Erin: My first suggestion is Oya. I really like the space there and it's certainly not too young. The bars at Cafe Atlantico and Poste are nice. 701 has a spacious bar area and I am partial to the lounge area of Rasika as well.
_______________________
U Street, Washington, D.C.: What do you guys think of the service at Duffy's Irish Restaurant & Pub on Vermont Ave? I was excited about them opening up in my neighborhood, but every time I've been there, the service is incredibly slow. The wait staff is terrible about coming around to serve another round of drinks, even if you try to waive them over, and we end up going to the bar and getting refills ourselves. We even brought up the issue to the management (politely) and they totally blew us off. I'd like to give them another chance, but the horrible service is really getting old.
Fritz: Horrible service gets me down, too. I haven't had problems getting service when seated at the bar (obvs) or playing darts, but the crowds were pretty light.
_______________________
Starscape: I hear a lot of people talking about Starscape this weekend. Is it worth going to? Any info on it?
David: I never went to too many events like that, but of the ones I did go to, Starscape was by far the best. Ultraworld knows how to throw a party, and Fort Armistead Park up in Baltimore is a great location. Now that there's live music, it's going to appeal to even more folks. Well, it will appeal to electronic music fans and jam band fans (music headliners are Disco Biscuits and Medeski Martin and Wood). There will also be the usual array of top DJs and visual arts. $50 does seem a bit steep, but if any one of these events is worth that, it's definitely Starscape.

Clarendon, Va.: Hi! I'll be in Clarendon this weekend, and looking for a fun bar to spend my Saturday night in. I almost never go out in VA, so I don't really know the area. I'll be with my sister, and we're in our mid- to late-twenties. We're looking for a fun/moderately priced atmosphere, not too stuffy, but not too frat party. Somewhere we can potentially talk to some nice guys, but enjoy ourselves even if not. Must be walkable from the general vicinity of the Metro.
Fritz: First pick is Eleventh Street, which still hasn't gotten the ballcaps-and-Tevas crowds from the neighboring Mister Days and Clarendon Grill, but it's small and seats can be hard to come by. Friends of mine like Harry's Tap Room, which has wines by the glass and a good crowd, and while I don't think it's anything super-special, might be worth a look.

Rockville, Va.: A group of us go to Great Falls at least half a dozen times a year--it's beautiful. Try the Billy Goat trail--but give yourself a couple of hours, and wear sturdy hiking shoes. And bring some water. Or just hike along the canal or the other, shorter trails. On a recent hike, we saw snakes, turtles, geese and lizards. Also, you can combine a day outdoors with a good meal. Hike for a while, then go to the Old Angler's Inn, a classic, well-liked restaurant that is directly across the street from Great Falls!
Fritz: I'm partial to the Virginia side for hiking and the Maryland side for picnics, but either way, you win.

14th & Eye NW, Washington, D.C.: We've got a staff of 12, late 20s to late 50s, looking for a good place to gather for a drink after work. It needs to be reasonable enough for the receptionist to be able to pick up a round (she insists on taking a turn) and provide the sophisticated drinks the VPs demand. On top of that it's supposed to be close to the office (McPherson Square). I must look like an alcoholic, because the job of finding the perfect spot has been delegated to me. I suppose what I need is "Cheers". Any advice, dear GOGs?
Erin: Have you hit Helix and Rouge already? My other idea is happy hour at Corduroy's bar in the Sheraton.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus! I'm new to the area, and I'm looking for a choir to join. I've been singing for many years, so I'm looking for a group that sings challenging music, but I'm not interested in something that's extremely high pressure. Additionally, I'm hoping to find a group that has people in my age range (20s or 30s). Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!
Anne: How about the 18th Street Singers ? They seem like they'd be right up your alley. Here's some more ideas on choral groups in D.C .

Washington, D.C.: What food options will be available at the Old Dominion Beer Festival. Are we allowed to bring our own grub. I did not see anything on the Old Dominion Web site. Will their restaurant be open and how large is it. Thanks
Fritz: In recent years, the food options at the festival have been pretty disappointing, to say the least -- vendors with carts set up in the field, and some are Adams Morgan Day-quality. You can't bring your own food, and the Brewpub will be open during the festival.

New York, N.Y.: Hey Gurus - Former D.C.-er here and looking for some advice. A friend of mine asked me to recommend some places for her family to visit when they're in D.C. in July. Her brother is in a wheelchair and has a guide dog, so it makes it a little more difficult. Of course I'll recommend the FDR and other monuments, but what are some really good ideas that will be easy with the wheelchair? Thanks!
Jen: All of the Smithsonian museums are handicapped-accessible, so those would be an obvious place to start. I believe the Spy Museum is, too. They should also look into seeing a play or live performance ... maybe something at the Kennedy Center? I can't recall whether I've seen anyone there with a guide dog, but I'm betting it wouldn't be a problem. Depending on when in July they arrive, the Folklife Festival would be a good call for them, too.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,
This is my second year living in the district and my biggest regret last year was not going to the DC Caribbean Carnival parade. Needless to say, I am definitely going this year but am wondering what's goin down on Friday and Saturday nights to keep the celebration going? I know that there are shows and events at Crossroads, but is there anything that sounds promising and full of Caribbean love for a girl with no car in the district?
Thanks so much!
Rhome: Zanzibar 's doing big things.
Also make sure to hit up
,
and
while you're at the parade. You'll be able to pick up flyers for all the parties and shows that aren't contained in the
and ask your fellow revelers about where the real west indian insiders are trying to party.

Washington, D.C.: Hola GOGs - My friend is getting married in Alexandria in September - problem is she lives in Southern California. She's asked for assistance in finding a hairdresser known for updos in the D.C. or Old Town area. I don't do updo - any suggestions? Or maybe the chatters? Many thanks.
Janet: For the record, I'm not a fan of updos. I've seen too many women on their way to some fancy event, and frankly their hairdos wear them. That said, Sugarhouse in Alexandria would be one reliable place to try. Anyone pleased with the results of a recent updo??

Washington, D.C.: I hate to bash my almost favorite French restaurant, but Bistro du Coin (despite their amazing food) is terrible with big parties. Went with 14 for my 29th and it was a nightmare. I still go, albeit with smaller groups on a weeknight.
Fritz: 14 people? Did they give you the entire upstairs or what? That sounds a little large for BdC.

Eckington, D.C.: Fritz: any word on Kingpin? It's been a year and a half since the fire. I walk by there quite frequently and it doesn't look like anything's been done with the building. Didn't they have fire insurance? Is there some sort of litigation involved? You'd think the owner of the building would want to get it back on the rental market ASAP considering all that's going on at that end of U. What's the scoop?
Fritz: I hope to have news for you soon. That's all I can say at the moment, because there's no official word.

Washington, D.C.: Dear Gurus, please help me with this dilemma. My friend is visiting from Russia and he is absolutely allergic to cigarette smoke. He is interested in visiting a music event/club/open air concert this weekend, but I don't know if there is such a place around the DC area. I know about the non-smoking Blues Alley, but his interests are more in the heavy metal /or rock category. We have a car and we are willing to travel. Thank you!
David: Yeah, that's sort of tough. There's a punk/metal show at the Warehouse Next Door on Sunday night. There are a lot of the events we've talked about before -- Barbecue Battle, Old Dominion Beer Festival, Eastport-a-Rockin' -- that are outdoors, but heavy metal won't be too well represented at those.

Washington, D.C.: Little more info on this Blue Duck Tavern. What hotel is it in? And are you guys really that amped about it or was there a good press party there?
Erin: The Tavern is in the new Park Hyatt Hotel. It's in the old Melrose space, so it's got that gorgeous and spacious patio going for it. Also, I think the name doesn't do it justice. It's not a dark place (as "tavern" would lead me to believe): It's open and airy. I loved the food I ordered (particularly the desserts with hand-churned ice cream) and Fritz says that the cocktails he tried on the night he went were "hoooot." (I had one good cocktail and then moved to some amazing wine.)

Washington, D.C.: On Charlie Victor Romeo and eating - the play, in my opinion, actually gets less disturbing toward the end. If I'd eaten before, I might have thrown up during the first scene. (Plus, you can't really be late or they won't let you in.)
Erin: That's good information, I guess. I wonder if anybody actually has thrown up.

Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: Friday night- two girlfriends and myself have a strong desire to go out dancing for my 22nd birthday. A few req's: we want a classy club (we want to dress-up), small or no cover charge, and a crowd that is age-appropriate (we are young but blend in well with mid- to late-twenties). I was thinking Pearl, but I guess its closed down. And I've never been to ESL, is it worth it? Are the lines bad? Any thoughts? Thanks guys! (and gals!)
Fritz: Eighteenth Street Lounge is still great, and if you go on Friday, you'll get to see the awesome Federico Aubele (of ESL Records) doing a DJ set. There's room to dance, and while 22 is on the young side, if you dress up and act mature, you'll have no problems blending in. (Women also get in faster than men do.)

Alexandria, Va.: My husband and I are on a mini golf kick right now. We really are dying to find a place that has old-school, Putt Putt style holes -- we want castles, windmills and waterfalls!
We've been to the Cameron Run course and to the Kingstowne course, and had fun, but they were kind of boring.
Any suggestions, or do we have to wait to go to the beach?
Anne: I heartily endorse this mission, Alexandria, and hope you'll report back to us on the other courses you try. I kinda like the woodsy Upton Hill miniature golf course, although you may find it similar to the other NoVa ones. But if you are up for a road trip, one much closer than the mini-golf metropolis of Myrtle Beach, you should go to my personal favorite course Village Greens . You will love it.
_______________________
Columbia, Md.: What is the price range for the Blue Duck Tavern? Their web site is not complete and they do not have a menu on line yet.
Erin: Prices are lower than they were at Melrose, but I wouldn't say cheap. Plates are set in the middle of the table and meant to be shared, so you can get away with ordering fewer large portions. All dishes (including the "angry trout" whose tail is run through his mouth) run in the low $20s, but that amazing bone-in rib eye checks in at $80 for two people. Side dishes are extra.

G Street fabric location: A small correction- G Street Fabrics is actually closest to White Flint Metro, not Rockville. It would definitely be a long annoying walk along the Pike from the Rockville Metro!

Chinatown, Washington, D.C.: Hey GOGs,
Where can I get good Italian ice? They were my favorite summer treat when I lived in NJ/NYC area. Wondering if they had them here. Thanks! You've all been really helpful about past questions. I'm sure this question will be easy to answer.
Erin: Yeah, I know how you feel. The craving kicked in big time while I was in New York last weekend. Round these parts, Rita's Water Ice in NE is probably your best bet.

Falls Church, Va.: Perhaps this is more a Tom question, but maybe you'll have some ideas. My boyfriend and I are celebrating our five-year anniversary with a couple of days in Charlottesville at the end of the month. Any suggestions for a nice romantic dinner? In D.C. we like Tabard Inn, Zola, Zaytinya, Tabaq, etc. We're pretty open-minded cuisine-wise. Thanks!
Janet: A couple suggestions: Two bed-and-breakfasts -- Clifton Inn and Prospect Hill also serve fancy dinners, complete with all the trimmings. Reservations required.

Janet: Another suggestion for the person in search of a haircutting school.

for Craftville: Pla-za in Silver Spring is pretty good - they've got lots of framing stuff and it's about a 10-15 minute walk from the Silver Spring metro, which isn't bad at all -and- it's open on weekends. Here's their Web site .
Julia: Here you go

Arlington, Va.: GoGs! What's the scoop on the Old Dominion Beer Festival this weekend? Worth the trip to Ashburn?
Fritz: It can be. I'm not sure about the $20 ticket, even if it gets admission to all three days. The music lineup might be the best I've ever seen, and there are some really promising breweries in attendance. (Bear Republic, Smuttynose and North Coast would be high on my list.)
But it's in Ashburn, which means either you don't sample everything you want or you need to bring a designated driver, because I've seen the police set up checkpoints right outside. (That makes sense.)

Washington, D.C.: Not Paul Mitchell/Aveda...For the person who needs a new stylist and colorist. I used to go to Graham Webb salon school in Rosslyn and had a good experience - about $60 for cut & permanent color. Janet: Yet another thumbs-up for the Graham School in Rosslyn.

Annapolis, Md.: Hi Gurus!
I love you guys and all of our great suggestions and ideas. Your bachelorette tips made for a great party last weekend - thank you!
I have been trying to submit an event to the Post for the past couple of months, and I must have all the wrong submission info, or something. Anyway, it is this weekend and it is pretty cool - a good reason to check out Annapolis on Saturday. It's Eastport a Rockin' and this is the 10th year that it has brought live local music to the shores of Back Creek. 26 bands will perform on 3 stages, tons of food and beer, a kids area with a moon bounce and face painting and more - it's a great festival for all ages. And, best of all, entrance is only $10. Visit www.eastportarockin.com or myspace.com/eastportarockin for more information.
The bands will play a range of music from rock to country to folk to blues to funk to... The site is right alongside Back Creek, and there is a beach right next to one of the stages, which draws many dogs, kids and hot adults.
I know it's not in the City, but maybe some people would like to get out of the city and maybe this would be worth them knowing about? Fritz, I know you love Annapolis...
Have a great weekend gurus!
Anne: Fritz does love Annapolis, and thanks for your love, too. It's a big musical festival weekend , for sure, and no worries, Eastpost is a Rockin ' with us already. For your handydandy reference and for anyone else who wants to submit an event to us, send an e-mail to events[at]washingtonpost[dot]com.

Clarendon, Va.: What are your top picks for fun (read: mid price, not too swank, yet not too frat party either)bars within walking distance of the Clarendon metro? We're two mid to late 20's women, if that makes a difference. No cover charge please, if possible.
Erin: I would say Eleventh Street Lounge , the roof of Clarendon Ballroom and perhaps Ri-Ra .
Fritz: Co-signed on Eleventh and Ri-Ra, though the latter is crowded for live music on weekends, and adding Harry's Tap Room and Galaxy Hut. The Ballroom usually has a cover.

Bethesda, Md.: My Girlfriend and are headed to Citronelle For an evening of Drinks, Dinner and Dancing. The other couple traveling with us have reserved a table next to the kitchen. Can you tell me what I can expect as far as dress code and Somewhere fun to dance after?
Erin: I would dress up for Citronelle (particularly if you'll be at the chef's table). It's probably not the night to wear jeans.
I'm not really a dancer, so I can't help with where to go nearby, but you might get in some dancing at
.

Arlington, Va.: The Kennedy Center also has a great audio description program if the person with the guide dog is visually impaired. But they should call ahead because the describers aren't there every night.
Jen: That's good to know. Thanks, Arlington.

Rockville, Md.: I'm taking my husband to see Spamalot at the National Theater on Friday night for his birthday and we want to go out for dinner/drinks after the show, which I understand ends around 10:30. It seems that most restaurants close at 11 - what are some late-night options?
Thanks!
Erin: Not to worry, lots of places stay open later in that area on weekends. When I went, I hopped over for mint juleps at the Round Robin Bar , but you should hit up Les Halles , Ceiba or Jaleo.

Alexandria, Va.: Question for Janet: Where, oh where, can a girl find a pretty, flirty sundress in this town? Boy returns from Europe this weekend and I need something new and feminine to wear when I pick him up from the airport. Thank you kindly!!
Janet: Sundresses can be found all over town. In fact, I'm going to be writing a story about them soon, but unfortunately too late for your purposes. Take a look at Anthropologie's web site to get an idea of what's available.

Washington, D.C.: My wife & I enjoy slow dancing vs salsa or hip hop. I assume no place has strictly slow dancing, but if it does have some slow dances, we would be interested. We have both lived in and are specialists of the rock n' roll era. Hope you have some suggestions in the DC, Md. or Va. area.
Rhome: It seems like you're talking about an endangered species of social dancing, especially if you're coming from the rock end of things. I can only think of places that have either ballroom or swing or country/line-dancing that will mix in slower numbers. Chatters?
Janet: Don't know if it's still there, but there was an old-fashioned ballroom dancing lessons place above Senses in that shopping strip in Cleveland Park.
_______________________
Entre Nous/Bar Nun: It's actually a very good time. Yes, it's as risque as pretty much anything...you'll see women wearing nothing but sheer nighties and teddies and you'll see lots of topless women dancing, but most of the people are wonderfully nice and you don't run into any attitudes like you might at mainstream clubs. Some of the couples are trying to pick you up, sure, and that accounts for the niceness. But so what? There's no pressure, and if you're not interested they still want to get to know you. It's a lot of fun. Everyone is letting their hair down and having a good time.
Rhome: Some embedded journalism here.

Julia: I gotta go with Meeps , Value Village (2277 University Blvd E, Hyattsville 301-422-2406) or Georgia Avenue Thrift (6101 Georgia Avenue NW, 202-291-4013) on this one.

Silver Spring, Md.: Do you know of ways to get to Camden Yards by public transportation? I know there is the Marc train but it does not run that often. There is always to bus to BWI and the light rail but that would take a while. I thought there were some buses from New Carellton or I have heard from Greenbelt. Do you know anything about the buses?
Fritz: Don't know much about the buses, other than the Greenbelt-to-light-rail method you mentioned.
As far as train travel: MARC is the best way to go during the week, though the last train leaves Baltimore for Washington at 6:10.
On weekends, you've got Amtrak (which is publicly subsidized), but can be kind of pricey -- take advantage of those "half-off companion fares" if you can.

Arlington County offers the classes, but with my job, I cannot make a twice a week commitment for six weeks (nor do I want to pay $250). Any ideas? I would prefer something hands on - does Michaels or the like do that? Thanks so much - LOVE the chats!!
Julia: Glen Echo does. Their prices are probably about the same -- it costs a lot to operate a kiln and all -- but they usually do once-a-week classes.

Summers? I just worry if one of these places are all ages that they might lack the amazing pro-England vibe that Lucky Bar had. Thanks - you guys are the best.
Fritz: They were carding at Pilar last weekend, and Temperance isn't opening early, I don't think. You might try Summers, which can be more family friendly, or Fado.

Baltimore, Md.: You all haven't steered me wrong yet... The Boyfriend and I will be in Charm City this weekend and we are looking for some fun stuff to do. We have tickets to the O's/Nat's game on Friday night but no plans for Saturday or Sunday. I heard there is a Latino festival happening but I'm not so sure about it. We tried the German festival last year and it was tiny, no actual German food (or beer), no live music and the crafts were all 'made in China'. Have you heard good things about the Latino festival, if not, do you have any other suggestions?
Anne: Haven't been to the Latino festival , but if you're heading up there this weekend, I'd suggest the Matisse exhibit at the BMA, visiting the American Visionary Art Museum , or seeing the 30th birthday celebration at the Maryland Science Center . If you're lucky enough to be born in the year 1976 (and you can prove it), you can get into the museum for free.
