Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's City Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the City Guide or read transcripts of past Got Plans? discussions .
The transcript follows.

washingtonpost.com:
Hi, everyone, Thanks for joining us on this kind of gloomy Thursday before the Labor Day break. We're all ready to answer your going-out questions so bring 'em on!!
_______________________
Adams Morgan: What's the story on Mantis closing?
Fritz: Mantis has had its problems in recent years -- more personal than public -- but I'm sad to see the place go. That dark basement dancefloor was one of the best places to get your groove on in Adams Morgan, with a reliable lineup of house DJs keeping it going until late.
Within a few months, it's going to become a branch of Cafe Bonaparte, the Georgetown creperie. I hope they stay open really late on weekends, sell halal savoyards like my favorite little Parisian crepe stand, and do something cool with the basement.

Capitol Hill: Fritz,
I read your review of the Belgian Happy Hour at Bohemian Caverns, but I see that it's a little dated ('03)... still a fun trip? Also, what's the "vibe" there, if you will?... I am envisioning a "chill" crowd...
Thanks!
Fritz: Very chill, very ... relaxed, though sometimes loud, thanks to copeous amounts of Belgian beers.

Washington, D.C.:
Hi. I am submitting early because of a conflict and I hope you answer this question because I know this is not your typical going-out question but do you know anything (hrs, days etc.) about the The Baltimore Antique Show this weekend? Thanks for your help!!!
Janet: The show started today at noon and goes until 8 p.m. Admission is $12. Then on Friday and Saturday, it's 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 to 6. Admission is $8 Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
_______________________
Falls Church, Va.: Hey Gurus, sending my question early so I don't forget. My wife and I just moved to Falls Church and I want to take her out to dinner on Friday night. I'm looking for an Italian restaurant - any suggestions?
Erin: I know this isn't a strong recommendation since I haven't been there, but I've heard great things about Argia's . In that general vicinity, I would also steer you to Restaurant Vero for a quaint American spot.

Washington, D.C.:
A girlfriend and I are interested in getting quality makeovers. Do you have any reviews or opinions as to which counters/lines are better (MAC vs Lancome vs Clinique etc.)? Thanks much!
Janet: If I were you and your girlfriend I'd stroll M Street in Gtown and check out Sephora, M.A.C. and Bluemercury.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: I'm showing a friend the town tomorrow night and though I live near U St, I'm ashamed to say that I haven't been to any jazz places other than HR-57. Can you recommend a place with crowd-pleasing jazz on a Friday night?
Fritz: Twins Jazz has Katy Roberts this weekend, and the Parisian-based pianist has a new album to promote. I like the atmosphere at Twins -- the audience is appreciative, the sound is generally good. Cafe Nema has live jazz in more of a cafe setting, as is U-topia. Can't go wrong with either of those for something more intimate.

Farragut, Washington, D.C.: Kind of an odd question, and I'm not even sure if it's in your purview, but I'm trying to find a swimming pool. I need a place to swim laps after work in downtown Farragut. Is there any place where I could pay a fee to join, like a hotel or something?
Anne: We love odd questions at Guru Central, and you know the first thing that's in my head? It's fun to swim at the YMCA . It's convenient to downtown, and rates are pretty competitive with gyms.

Drinks before dinner?: Hi Gurus,
We (a party of 7) have Saturday dinner reservations at Viridian. Could you recommend a few places nearby for pre-dinner drinks? A place within walking distance where we could sit down as opposed standing at a bar would be ideal (but not essential).
Thanks!
Erin: Oh, please write back and share details about Viridian. I haven't been in a few months. For pre-gaming, I would head to Helix Lounge , the bar at Nage (where I recently had a great mojito) or possibly Merkado Kitchen .
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Going to the opening of Be Bar tonight. Any idea what to expect?
Fritz: Nope. Tonight is the "friends and family" private opening. I'll be schlepping in to the new "upscale gay lounge" this weekend with the rest of the un-VIPs.
I have to say that I'm surprised that the ABRA was so quick to override the church's protest, even though the "it's gonna hurt the youth" excuse was a stretch at best. Hopefully this bodes well for Vegetate, Queen of Sheba and other businesses trying to move into Shaw.
_______________________
Arlington, Va.: Yes - Argia's is great - especially for dessert. Order the berries and cream. I think it's the best dessert in the whole D.C. area.
Erin: See? I told you: great things. The dessert sounds simple and delicious. You could probably use some heavy cream after lugging moving boxes.

Washington, D.C.:
GoGs - I know this is a pretty random question, but I'm not sure who else to ask! I was wondering if you knew any needlepoint stores or any knitting stores in the DC area.
Janet: Well, there's
for knitting. Don't really know about needlepoint.

Tysons Corner, Va.: My company softball team plays games on the Ellipse in front of the White House on Thursday nights. We like to go out for burgers/beer after the game, but we're frustrated with The Exchange's slow service and mediocre food. But it doesn't seem as if there are any other places that one could go into with a softball t-shirt and shorts within walking distance in that area. Any suggestions?
Fritz: Hmmmm. Well, you could always walk a couple more blocks to Froggy Bottom or Lindy's. College bars aren't usually -- how do you say -- too picky.

midlife crisis: I'm loathe to mention this in any public forum (albeit an anonymous one) but I'm coming swiftly upon the big 3-0. Ack! I'm hoping you can suggest some death-defying activity that my fiance and I can attempt on this most fateful of days. Something that thrills me even while I ponder my mortality. Thanks.
Rhome: Dear friend,
That's way too much pressure for a group of Gurus. Just do what I do (did, when I turned 30... and 31). Have a really big party with all your favorite people and dance, eat and drink yourselves silly. And take lots of pictures.
30 is the new 20!

Washington, D.C.:
Hey, GOGs, Question for you -- are there any costume shops in the metro area (bonus for Metro accessible)? I know a few pop up, closer to Halloween, but I'm having a themed murder mystery party, and I want guests to dress up. Even rentals might be ok.
Janet: Think you should be able to find something in this listing . Happy murder mystery party. Sounds like a fun idea.

Cover Bands: There used to be a fun cover band called Tin Pan Alley that used to play every now and then at Clarendon Ballroom. I think they stopped playing together. Do you know of any fun cover bands that play in the area?
David: I'm blanking right now on all the cover bands, probably because I just did something really terrible at work, so so so bad. Man am I screwed. Also because they all sort of blend together for me. Um, let's see -- Gonzo's Noise, Burnt Sienna, Kristen and the Noise, the Legwarmers, 8 Track Jones, the Reflex ... just to go to Clarendon Ballroom regularly for a while and you'll find a new favorite.
_______________________
Bethesda, Md.: Hi Gurus! Thanks for the chats - you all rock. Hoping for a restaurant recommendation for a wedding anniversary dinner. Husband and I are 30, looking for something special and delicious thinking about Komi, Palena, Restaurant Eve... but really want to see what you all think.
Thanks!!
Erin: Happy anniversary, Bethesda. When it comes to special and delicious, I'm all about Restaurant Eve. Sure, Komi and Palena do specialize in delicious, but I think that Eve is superlative. You could also consider Citronelle , Obelisk or 2941 .

Reston, Va.: You guys are great!
It is my hubby and my one-year anniversary this weekend. We decided to stay around town and have dinner reservations in D.C. on Saturday. However, Saturday during the day we want to hit the city. Any must see exhibits we should hit or anything particularly romantic we could do? Also we want to make it a full celebration weekend? Anything different and fun we could do on Sunday? Thanks for your help!
Julia: The Venetian painting exhibit is certainly not-to-be-missed if you haven't already seen it. Many of these beautiful paintings won't be coming back to the states any time soon, so it's worth the trip. If you're thinking about building and/or designing a house with this hubby of yours, the Green House exhibit at the National Building Museum is also good.
I know you were interested in in-the-city ideas, but if you're game for a little drive, the weekend wine tastings at Lignanore Wine Cellars might give you an off-the-beaten path idea for Sunday. Glen Echo is also outside the city, but its Labor Day Art Show should be a good bet as well.
_______________________
Burke, VA: What do you know about the DC bar, The Red and the Black? A friend's band from NJ is playing there in a few weeks and I can't find much info about it. Thanks mucho!
Fritz: Really? I blogged about it in June and wrote a longer review in the Weekend section a few weeks ago, which you can read here .
Short review: Like DC9, but smaller, with some sound issues.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Thanks for taking my question. Given the weather forecast for this weekend -- rain -- any ideas for what to do? Something fun or different?
Julia: The Labor Day Art Show (mentioned above) is indoors, so that might be a good bet. The Page-to-Stage Festival is another indoor idea.
_______________________
Farragut North: Gurritos - A few weeks back, Style had a piece on interns going out to happy hour. It referenced a fabled "List" of places w drink & eat specials for each night of the week. Can you folks print or post a link to this list? and also Nixon's enemy list while you're at it?
Fritz: How about I put a link to my blog post debunking said "list" of outdated happy hour specials?
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: There's also a public indoor lap swimming pool near Eastern Market. Not close to Farragut, but on the Orange or Blue lines. Don't know if it's open year round though.
Rhome: The pool formerly known as the Capitol East Natatorium . I spent a lot of time there as a shorty. Free to DC residents!
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: It's so clammy out. Do you gurus ever feel like bagging plans to stay home with hot rummy cider? If I do decide to go out tonight, do you have any cozy suggestions?
Fritz: The dimly lit wine bar on the second floor of Bistro Lepic, the brick-walled cellar at Cafe Nema, on a sofa in the lounge of the Tabard Inn...
_______________________
Bethesda, Md.: So, what is there to do this weekend for those of us actually staying in town and not heading to the beaches for a final summer fling? Any good museum exhibits, festivals or shows to attend?
Anne: I think since you mentioned the words "museum" and "this weekend" in the same question, we're culturally required to remind you that the Smithsonian's American History museum is closing for a two-year renovation as of Monday. So hurry on down there to get your last look at the old dark building and its treasures. You can take our podcast along as an audio guide. In other exhibits closing soon , the Document show of paintings created by breakdancers at DCAC sounds pretty funky, too.
Julia: I'd see Klee and the Venetian painting shows before they leave town.

Chevy Chase, Md.: So it's my birthday next Thursday and I want to go out to a dinner with a group of friends. I've tried the usual group birthday destinations (Melting Pot, Marrakesh) in previous years. I'd like to find a place that, like Marrakesh, is a fun place not just for dinner but for some entertainment too. Maybe a good tapas restaurant with flamenco dancing during dinner or something of the kind? Please help, GOGs!
Erin: Hmm. The dancers only perform at Jaleo and Zaytinya on Wednesdays. Would you venture out to Old Town for a show at Las Tapas ? Once it's over, you've got plenty of new places to wander, including opening night of PX.

Washington, D.C.: This city girl is heading out to Rockville tonight. Never been to Houston's before, but I hear it's pretty good. Can I roll through there in jeans and kicks and with just 50 bucks for two people? How fancy is it and how packed does it get at, say, 8:00 on a Thursday night?
Thanks!
Erin: You'll be good to go in jeans and kicks (assuming that you're not sporting a hoodie or sports bra on top). I used to go after the movies when I lived in LA and I was always pretty casual.
I go for the massive (and fairly priced) burger at Houston's, so if you go that route, you'll be good with $50. If you prefer the sea creatures and some sips, you might push $75 or so.

Tysons Corner, Va.: Went to pick up some lunch today from PF Chang's in the Galleria and they were closed until further notice. How does one find out when the health department closes a restaurant and why they failed?
Rhome: Just search for "Health Code Violations" on our site. (I guess I'm Utility Guru today)

RE: Knitting:
There's a yarn shop on Barrack's Row - but I can't remember the name. Down toward the Starfish Cafe end.
Janet: Stitch DC has another location , in addition to the one I mentioned previously.

Reston, Va.: Hi Gurus,
Where can my husband and I go for a dressy meal, where I in a silk dress and he in a suit won't look or feel out of place? We're looking for dressy, not stuffy, and price really isn't important. It seems that no one gets gussied up to step out anymore.
Erin: That's a good one. How about Zeffirelli in Herndon or McLean's Colvin Run Tavern, which caters to the nicely dressed business crowd?
_______________________
Lap Pool:
I often go to the Marie Reed pool in Adams Morgan, just behind the kickball field on California. It's open most week nights for lap swimming starting at 5.
Janet: Thanks for the input.

Washington, D.C.: What's the best option for hoping to catch some Rock En Espanol music in the area?
David: You just missed a good chance to see a bunch of locals at DC9 last week -- Machetres, Nayas, Papas Underground, Stone Gato. That show was promoted by Oxigeno , who is on top of the local RenE stuff. The State Theatre has become a place where you can catch some Rock en Espanol somewhat regularly. I know Molotov just played there and El Gran Silencio and the Musica Fresca Tour are on its schedule now. If you need a quick fix, Nayas is at Guarapo tomorrow and Machetres are playing a free show in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday.

I'm hoping to find out more about the Aveda Institute. Do they do manicures/pedicures? Is there anyway to find out what their prices are like, hours, etc? I couldn't find much info on their web site.
Janet: Here's some info for you on Aveda .

Rosslyn, Va.: PX? What, and where is it? Old Town desperately needs some good night clubs/bars. Enough with the Irish pubs already. I like them as much as anyone else but anytime a bar closes in Old Town, an Irish pub takes its place (Bullfeathers for example)
Fritz: I've seen the PX and I'm pretty impressed. Todd Thrasher -- the mad genius of cocktails, who makes both his own tonic water and martinis garnished with fois gras -- is trying to make the place look like a '30s speakeasy, with velvet couches, vintage cocktail shakers and glasses, old-school light fixtures, etc.
You can't just walk in, either. You ring a buzzer outside, a server comes down, gives you the onceover through a peephole, and then lets you in -- if there's room. The PX has a capacity around 40, if I remember correctly.
Haven't read the entire cocktail list, but what I've heard about intrigues me.
The PX is above Eamonn's, on King Street.

Rockville, Md.: Re: midlife crisis: If 30 is the new 20, is 40 the new 30? Oh, please say yes.
Rhome: Looks like sound arithmetic to me.

Arlington, Va.:
Some girlfriends and I want to find a place to get pedicures and martinis at the same time. Is there a place in DC or VA that you know offers this?
Janet: Anyone know of a place that offers pedicures and martinis? Sounds interesting to us.

Washington, D.C. : I know this was asked recently, but I don't know the answer: does the Cap City Brewery still tap a cask on Thursdays?
Fritz: Last time I talked to brewer Pete Velez, it was still on, and Cap City is still showing the event on its Web site.
_______________________
Green House exhibit: Isn't it over already?
Julia: Nope. It's up for a year. Look out for this cool expo in November.
_______________________
Just a question...: You answered a question Tom was asked (and answered) yesterday. Do you all have any policy to checking what others are asked/have answered, in order to respond to a larger variety?
Fritz: Nope. We just answer what we have in front of us.

Tysons Corner, Va.: Hey y'all! Love your blog, love the chat -now I need help please. Boyfriend's parents are flying over from Europe and I'm meeting them for the first time. I need a "nice" place that doesn't scream "I'm desperate for your approval." Something that says "Yes, I'm stealing your son and keeping him on this side of the Atlantic, but DC's cool, I promise. We'll take care of him."
Erin: A place that screams cool to parents? What price range? In D.C. or Tysons? I'm going to throw out some random responses. I love Rasika in Chinatown, but it's a bit loud for that "wow 'em" conversation. It's innovative and fun, but not too much for parents (mine loved it).
I also think Cashion's Eat Place is that ultimate swanky neighborhood gathering place and put it at the top of my list for a parental visit.
I think that showing them the benefit of D.C. is as much about the neighborhood you choose as the actual spot. Think about the vibe you want to send: Safety? Try Oyamel in Crystal City or Carlyle in Shirlington. Artsy and vibrant? Think Viridian on 14th or Blue Duck Tavern. Lively? Head to Agraria in Georgetown or Mendocino Grille. Political? Bistro Bis on the Hill.

Alexandria, Va.:
Any idea where I can get a good pedicure without having to pay an arm and a leg?
Janet: Not cheap, but Bang charges $35.
_______________________
David...seriously: You can't dangle that "I did something terrible at work" and not tell us...
David: Let's just say that I hope Julia has the most comprehensive dental plan that our company offers.
(It's actually not all that interesting, just deleted a whoooooole bunch of stuff that really shouldn't have been deleted. IT REALLY SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN DELETED.)

Ballston, Va.: Hi Guru's,
I love a good Bloody Mary, especially for Sunday brunch, which my SO and I have started doing regularly. Where in No. Va or DC can you find the best ones? Organic or fresh-juiced would be great. (Special brunch deals or all-you -can drink for one price would be even better!)
Thanks!
Fritz: My current favorite is the Red Eye at the Argonaut: Extra spicy and made with rum for a different taste.
If someone would start making bacon bloody marys a la Bar Pilar, I'd be very happy.
_______________________
20011: Fritz, big props to Bourbon for having great beers that AREN'T 7% alcohol! I enjoy big beers a lot, but bars need to remember that people don't recognize the difference between 4 and 7 percent until it's too late...
Here's to more bars with craft beers that you can drink all night! Let's hear it for IPA's, not just Double IPA's!
Fritz: Yep. There's a reason most of my favorite English ales and German lagers are in the 3-4 percent range.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: I am moving to an apt near Gallery Place. What are the best not-too-expensive places to get take-out for dinner on the way home from work? Matchbox is already on my list.
Erin: You can get pizza to-go from Ella's, but my suggestion is to not neglect Chinatown's Asian spots. Burma Restaurant , Chinatown Express and Kanlaya are all delicious little gems that are typically uncrowded and budget-happy.
_______________________
Arlington, Va.: I checked out Rock and Roll Hotel last Friday night and loved it. My question is are they open every night or only when they show something on the calendar?
Fritz: Starting next week, the upstairs will be open daily. The main room will only be open when there's a band or DJ.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: GoGs: where can a man get a good rock hair cut in this city?! And by rock, I don't mean "Supernova" or highlights. Hit me.
Fritz: Like a rock mullet? A friend of mine had his done by a friend who cuts hair at Kibana in Silver Spring.
_______________________
Aveda question:
I know you all are doing your best with short time, but the Aveda Institute question was about manicures and pedicures and whatnot and the page you pointed to for an answer had this sum total of information about services: The difference between the institute and Aveda spas is that here students in training to be aestheticians provide the services. So you can get a haircut here for $18." Anything better to offer? I've only been there for a haircut, but I think they do color, too.
Janet: Aveda Institute offers four different kind of facials, depending on your skin type; hair services, including color, highlights and cut; and manicures and pedicures. Sorry, no massages.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Do you need advanced tickets for Dredd's Prince vs. Madonna night at the Black Cat Sunday? Or should I just show up on the early side and grab some drinks in the red room?
Fritz: I doubt it will sell out in advance -- the last one didn't -- but it never hurts to plan ahead. Why not pick up tickets tonight or tomorrow at the Cat?

Woodley Park, What is it?: Gurus,
You guys usually have the lowdown on new spots etc., so I'm turning to you for the scoop. I live in Woodley and it looks like Carbon, a shoe store?, is opening soon, or is it a club? Not sure, but in either case, it should add some spice to the block? Do I have this right, or could I just be hoping for another happy hour stop?
Rhome: Carbon is indeed a purveyor of fly wears for your feets , not drinks and merriment. Their site confirms the opening of the new location. Word to new ways to feed my addiction!
_______________________
Rockville, Md.: Quick question-do you know if Ray's the Classics in Silver Spring is a more formal environment or would it be okay to bring out toddler along for dinner and not be frowned upon?
Erin: From what I've seen, Ray's is more formal than its steaky sister. That's not to say that toddlers won't be welcome, but the floor is carpeted and there are some nice booths, so try to keep the cheerio-chucking to a minimum! Is that helpful?

Washington, D.C.: I'm a big fan of history, and so I was contemplating going to the museum this weekend (even though I've been so many times before, but since its closing, I feel a semi-obligation). But do you think its going to be extremely crowded? Are they already starting to pack things up, put things away, etc.?
Julia: American History is always crowded this time of year, so I have a feeling this weekend will be no different. They have already started to pack up -- drawing the ire of one City Guide reader -- so don't go expecting to see all of your old favorites. They even took down part of the building's facade on the Constitution Ave. side.
I'm torn about whether it's worth the trip, to be honest. I love that museum, so I feel you on the semi-obligation, but I think I'd rather remember how it usually looks that see a half-closed museum. If you do decide to go, Eve Zibart's
from last week's Weekend section is a great guide to what's still there.

Logan Circle, D.C.: Hey Gurus! Thanks for posting your own "best bets." I was particularly interested in the Chinese restaurant "Great Wall Szechuan House" because they deliver to my house. What do you normally order? What is especially good there? In other words, why is it a "best bet?"
Erin: Hi there, Logan. Great Wall is a gem of a find if you like spicy food. My favorite dish to order is the Ma La chicken. The large to-go portion is coated in a thick layer of chili oil. Typically, I can't ever get my food spicy enough, but this dish does it for me. The Ma Po tofu is also popular, but I rarely stray from my chicken.
My other standard dish there is the crispy chicken, Szechuan style. It's spicy, but not nearly as mouth-burning as the Ma La dishes. If given my choice, I would get it without the julienned celery/carrots, but the chicken's awesome.
I don't really eat pork, but I've had the twice-cooked pork and it's quite scrumptious. Everything else is pretty standard fare. If you go into the restaurant to order, pay close attention to the dry erase specials board.
It's a "best bet" because I haven't found many Chinese spots that wow me with flavor and inspiration. The spice at Great Wall is layered, complex spice and the food is fresh and craving-worthy: It was my first meal back from vacation.

Washington, D.C.:
Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, right off Barracks Row, offers knitting classes (among others).
Janet: Another suggestion for a place to go for knitting classes. Thanks.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: My hubby just moved to the area (yay!) but lives in Arlington, which I know nothing about. Where's the best place for us to go out on a Friday night for casual drinks that doesn't feel like I'm in a frat?
Thanks. You guys rock.
Fritz: Jay's Saloon (legendary neighborhood tavern with an older crowd and astroturf porch)
Galaxy Hut (indie rock on weekends, hipsters and locals during the week)
Eleventh Street (New York-inspired lounge)
Ri-Ra (much-bigger-than-it-seems-from-the-street Irish pub with two levels and good staff)

Chevy Chase, Md.: Thanks for the flamenco birthday suggestion. I'll take that under advisement. I will actually be going out on the weekend after my Thursday birthday, Friday or Saturday. I am also considering the Gallery in Silver Spring. What's the scoop on that place - the web site makes it seem really cool!
Fritz: Man, I'm hurt. I just reviewed it last week... you can read it here .
Go on a Saturday and you can dance until 4 a.m.

Carbon: second location or relocation?
Fritz: Second location. I'm excited.

McLean, Va.: Hi Gurus! Tom didn't answer my question, so I thought you guys would know. I have been told about a crab place in DC where they have the mallets at a big table and they bring you lots of crabs and everyone just goes crazy trying to smash their crabs open. Is this true? What is this place? And is it worth checking out?
Erin: That sounds weirdly fascinating. People go buckwild crushing crustaceans? It sounds like a messy messy contest idea. I do not know said place or event, but there are surely some great local crab places. I do not recommend that you watch, but I'll be talking a few up on TV later today.

Alexandria, Va.: My little brother is coming into town tomorrow. He used to live here with the family, so he's done the typical museums and such, but he hasn't seen lots of the new things to do in D.C. He's an outdoorsy guy, but I'd like to show him some of the new things to do indoors. Any suggestions? No bars or clubs this time around.
Anne: When did he move away? If he was around before 2000, he'll be amazed by the renovated American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery , which reopened in July. A walk around Seventh Street and the galleries/shops/theater/ bowling alley/restaurant there would be warranted, too. He'll be surprised what's happened to Chinatown. The National Museum of the American Indian is a relatively recent addition to the Mall, too, and his head will be spinning with all the food choices at Mitsitam.
_______________________
Traffic this Weekend: Hey Gurus
Any thought on what the traffic might be like heading out of town (on 270) tomorrow? Thanks!
Fritz: Miserable, depending what time you leave. Then again, I never take 270 much farther north than the Dogfish Head Alehouse, so don't trust me.

For the knitter, there's also Knit & Stitch = Bliss in Bethesda, a few blocks from the Metro, and Knit Happens in Old Town Alexandria. Both have websites too.
Janet: More knitting locations. Hope it's a cold winter.

Dupont Circle: I'm looking for a place, or a few places - they're monthly - to hold a happy hour for six to 12 women. We prefer non-smoking and we sure do like cheap drinks, but more than anything we want somewhere we can hear ourselves think. Or even hear each other talking. Any suggestions? Oh, and somewhere in the downtown/pennquarter/dupontcircle/ustreet general area. (Metro access is a plus.)
Fritz: Teaism, Topaz Bar, Firefly (in the lounge), the Saloon

Takoma Park, Md.: Julia, you were 5 when Invisible Touch came out? Ouch. Anyway. 70's prog-rock was my music during my HS years (the 80's) and I am very tempted by The Musical Box. Yes, $40 is too much, but I'm an economist, so looking at supply and demand, there really aren't that many Genesis tribute bands out there.
If you go, go the second night to experience the bombastic excess of "Supper's Ready." It's a great song, but did it really need to be a whole album side long? The prog rockers were bad about that...
Julia: Right on, Takoma Park. That post got a great comment last night too. Looks like the State Theater may pack 'em in after all....

Leaving on a jet plane: Hi gurus!
My boyfriend and I are leaving DC next month after living here for the past two years. We are going to put together a "one last time" list of restaurants, places to visit, etc. to do in the next month. What are some things that would be on your lists? Thanks!
Erin: That's a good one. My list would include the palak chaat salad at Rasika, guacamole and a mojito at Cafe Atlantico, cocktails and birthday cake at Restaurant Eve, fastening food (the veggie combo) at Etete, Peking duck at the Peking Gourmet Inn, a final pie from the Italian Store, a burger at Palena's cafe, ribs at A Taste of Carolina and the aforementioned Ma La chicken at tiny Great Wall Szechuan House. Basically, most of the things I know and love can be found here .

Potomac, Md.: There are several answers to the thrill-seeker turning 30, all of which we have done: whitewater rafting in West Virginia (there are several river choices, among them is the Gauley River); competitive paintball games (there is a place in Bowie where you can do this); rock-climbing; kayaking on the Potomac (although Great Falls should be out for the non-expert); charter fishing on the Chesapeake Bay or the Atlantic Ocean (a great time especially for those who have never fished before); jet skiing in Ocean City, if you're headed there; hiking and camping at any number of places; and caving in West Virginia, although you should do this only with at least two people who are experienced, and you should have pre-approved maps with you at all times. There--plenty of ways to get thrills for celebrating a 30th birthday.
Rhome: Hurray for outdoors fun!

Downtown: Where's the place to be on Saturday given the mass exodus for labor day?
Fritz: Roy Davis Jr. and Junior Sanchez at Gallery.

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: The Bethesda Crab House gives you mallets and lets you open a can of whoop-ass on some crabs.
Fritz: And really, that's the only way to do it. Mmmm. Mustard.

Bethesda, Md.: Planning to hit a Virginia winery or two if the weather holds...do you know of any holding special events this weekend?
Julia: I do. Tarara has an evening event on Saturday. Greene County is kind of a drive, but this event might be up your alley. Lots of wineries, all in one place.

Logan Circle, Washington, D.C.: Plleeeeeeeease answer my question about Stoney's?
Erin: For the other children in the class, this question was in regards to when Stoney's will open its doors (and plates of grilled cheese) in Logan Circle's P Street Bistro location.
The best case scenario is 2 weeks, but it's currently looking like it'll be 3-4 weeks. That's just in time for some autumnal snacking, if you ask me. I can hardly wait!

Courthouse, Va.:
Hi Gurus,
Love the column - have submitted many a time, but unfortunately have never been chosen. Hopefully you'll help with this post, if nothing else than for my disgruntled friend who was recently kicked out of Dr. Dremo's on a Monday late afternoon. According to my friend, who regularly frequents the dive bar on Mondays and Tuesdays, if not more often every week, he was there on Monday and informed he would not be allowed to set foot in the establishment for several months. Reason being: apparently, my friend had only left a $5 tip on a $50 order the week before (bad I know). The bartender also said that another person in his group of friends didn't tip at all, while a third (may have) left a glass on the shuffle board table. My friend apologized for the inconvenience, promised it wouldn't happen again and said he would leave a significant tip this time (at Dremo's alone this time) to make up for it. The bartender insisted that he leave and not return for several months, to the dismay of my friend because of the incessant rumors that Dremo's will be closing soon. To quote the e-mail my friend sent to 'Dr. Dremo':
"The beauty of Dremo's is the relaxed
atmosphere; kicking a customer out for "a couple months" for only
tipping 10% is not only insulting to the customer, who maybe was a
little short on cash that day, but flies in the face of the vibe that
you have obviously striven to create."
Poetic, I know. Thoughts Fritz and co?
Fritz: First, are we really getting the whole story here?
If the bartender thinks your friend and your friend's friends are cheap, well, there's nothing you can do about that.
I will say, though, that if you're "maybe a little short on cash," then you should either get someone else to buy your drinks or you should know what you can afford and not take it out on your server.

Re: Aveda question: So...the mighty Gurus send you to a web site, but not the exact page and that is a complaint? I Don't understand why you can't look these things up yourself...or use the initial information and to get the specifics.
Janet: Hear ye, hear ye.

Help, Reston, Va.: Am I too late? Forced to watch sports tonight with my fiance and his 10 guy friends. Where can we go in Arlington where I won't want to drown myself in margaritas? Or where if I do drown myself, I can be entertained?
Fritz: This sounds like a beautiful evening!
Clarendon Grill, not Mister Days, because while Mister Days is better for sports viewing, the crowd isn't as interesting.

San Jose, Calif.: My boyfriend and I are to be visiting next month from California. I'd like to take him to a nice dinner for his birthday, but he's a vegetarian. Can you recommend something nice, historical or charming but not touristy and, friendly to the non-meat eater. We'll be staying downtown and won't have a car, but are willing to take a cab or the metro.
Anne: Vegetate is cute (though probably a 15-minute walk from Dupont or Convention Center metro stops) and the Dupont branch of Teaism is peacefully charming, too. Neither will be tourist-filled.

Almighty GOG's, please help! I would like to get my eyebrows arched, but don't know where/who to go to! My natural eyebrows are full (not bushy), however, would like to make it more refined. My biggest concern is someone ruining my eyebrows that I have to permanently draw over! Do you know of any reputable "eyebrow" experts?
Janet: Try Georgette Klinger Advanced Aesthetics in Chevy Chase.

Centreville, Va.: Are any of you planning on going to The State Theatre tomorrow night to see The Speaks? I've been a longtime fan of the band... they just got a new drummer and have some really amazing new music.
David: I'll be at the Black Cat for Comets on Fire/(Th' Sounds of) Kaleidoscope/Benjy Ferree, on the opposite end of the rock spectrum, but I'm sure you'll have plenty of company at the State Theatre, as the Speaks and Welbilt are pretty popular in these parts.

Arlington Va.: In response to a comment a few weeks back about Starr Hill beer in the area, it is currently available at:
Murphy's Irish Pub (Alexandria)
Birchmere Music Hall (Alexandria)
Rustico Restaurant (Alexandria)
Stars and Stripes (Arlingon)
Union Street Public House (Alexandria)
Cheers
Fritz: I wrote a blog post about this a few weeks ago in response to the comment, giving the list of all Starr Hill outlets. You can read it here .

Arlington, Va.: there seems to be a new restaurant opening next to Cafe Asia in Rosslyn --- Piola?? Do you know what this place is/when it'll open? I'm looking for some new grub in the neighborhood.
Erin: The internationally popular thin crust pizza spot opened Monday and I promptly posted my first thoughts .

Friendship Heights: HiHi GOGs!
planning a b-day party for a friend in 2 weeks. We want to stay in Bethesda, but want a bar with a good afterwork/weekday evening scene and make the birthday girl stand out. We're generally fans of UnionJacks and RioGrande, can you recrecommendcouple places to branch out?
Fritz: How, exactly, do you want to make her stand out? Put sparklers on her head? Let her enter the bar riding a camel? (Man, I've been watching too much "My Super Sweet 16.")
I don't like Rio Grande and think Union Jack's is overrated. I'd much rather go to Divino's, Ri-Ra or even Tommy Joe's.

Arlington, Va.: I am going to enjoy the good weather this weekend with a light bicycle ride in D.C. I am thinking about ending up in Georgetown, could you recommend a place to get an afternoon snack and drink? Having good chocolate cake is a big bonus.
Anne: You'll think it's nuts, but Dean and Deluca in Georgetown should fit the bill perfectly. Sit outside and you can keep an eye on the bike. It's a much more attractive end to your ride than, say, Booeymongers or Snap.

Short on cash.: Fritz -
Thank you for seeing things from more than one point of view. Whether a patron is short on cash or not, the server has no idea and if they are doing their job for $2.85 an hour there is no reason why they should have to be punished by short-on-cash patrons.
Fritz: Exactly. It's not their fault you're skint. I've often forgone an extra drink when I'm low on cash so that I'll have enough for tax and tip.

Washington, D.C.: What can you tell me about the newly opened Rock N Roll Hotel on H street? A few friends and I are headed to one of their shows on Sunday night. Whats the vibe? What to wear? Best way to get there?
You Rock!
Fritz: 1. Cool yet grungy, with, as David says, an "Almost Famous" kind of vibe.
2. Wear whatever makes you comfortable, but don't get TOO dressed up.
3. Cab from Union Station (two zones) or the X2 bus.

Washington, D.C.: Can we make a rule that anyone who adds "please pick me" or notes that they hope you answer their question "this time" be banned from the chat and Dremos?
Fritz: Deal.

Celebrating in NW D.C.: Hi Gurus. I want to take out a fomer colleague for a martini to celebrate her last day at our old job today. She's near Dupont, I'm near Farragut West. Where do you suggest?
Fritz: Off the Record in the basement of the Hay Adams. Was there on Tuesday night and was reminded why I love that classy old place: fantastic bartenders, strong cocktails.

Washington D.C.: Is H20 an 18+ club? In general, what are some 18+ night spots (at least for girls), other than Platinum, Home, and Fur?
Fritz: H2O is only 18 and over for special events, like Sunday's (see the Nightlife Agenda for more info). Love is 18-and-over on Thursdays.
