Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's City Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
|
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the City Guide or read transcripts of past Got Plans? discussions .
The transcript follows.

washingtonpost.com: I thought I'd start today's chat with a quick lesson on etymology and geography.
Washington's schools were peacefully integrated in 1955, including the all-white John Quincy Adams elementary and the all-black Thomas P. Morgan elementary. This is where the Adams Morgan neighborhood gets its name from. Sadly, rumors that it was named for some guy called Adam who invented "the Morgan" turned out to be false -- and that's why the neighborhood's name is most definitely NOT spelled "Adam's Morgan."
Knowing is half the battle.
Anyway, I'm Fritz, and I have a cold. Thank God Anne, David, Erin, Janet, Jen, Julia and Rhome are here to help me answer your questions. Shall we begin?

Re: Bronco Fan: Back to last week's question about bars for Bronco fans, I saw a whole bunch of orange and blue in Carpool a couple weeks ago. Anyone know if that's the place to be for Bronco fans on Sundays? Or was that just a one time thing...
Fritz: Well, if you saw "a whole bunch of orange and blue in Carpool," then it sounds like a good place to be.
Just sayin'.

Chinatown, D.C.: You may have already announced this but I wanted to throw it out there since people ask about it a lot. Matchbox's patio and skylight seating (there are a couple tables outside and several in an enclosed greenhouse-looking thing) have opened--I saw people eating there this week at lunchtime!
Erin: Yes, you're absolutely right. I went to preview it last week. The patio is tiny, but the new annex more than doubles the seating capacity with spacious booths and that lovely glass roof. Can anybody give details on the new (and hopefully improved) wait?
Another thing to get excited about with Matchbox? Soon, you'll be able to scarf mini-burgers and pizza on Sundays. I'll keep you posted with details.

Downtown Washington, D.C.: Hello Gurus,
Trying to branch out from my normal weekly Texas Hold 'Em game and I'm wondering what bars hold tournaments. I know Asylum has a poker night, but any other places in the city? Thanks.
Fritz: Mondays at the the Uptown Tavern, Tuesday at Rhino Bar.

Potomac, Md.: Reliable sources indicate that there are indeed some tickets out there for the Virgin Festival at Pimlico on Saturday, and for the Roger Waters concert at Nissan, also on Saturday. Could make a very interesting day if you decided to do both!
David: Well, if spending a couple of hours driving between Baltimore and Bristow and dealing with traffic not once, but twice, is your idea of interesting, then I guess it could make for an interesting day. A very, very expensive interesting day with many hours spent not moving in your car. So yeah, you'd be advised to pick just one.
_______________________
Potomac, Md.: I just returned from my honeymoon in Aruba and am craving the sweet fried (not battered) plantains that accompanied a lot of the Caribbean dishes. Can you recommend a Caribbean restaurant that's tasty in the NW/Bethesda/MoCo area?
Erin: How about Caribbean Kitchen or Negril ?

Washington, D.C.: Hooray! My husband doesn't have to work this weekend! We want to do something fun, but have to consider our two daughters (ages 2 and 8 months). Something that will be fun for us, that will be easy and not boring for them. Also something that doesn't take a lot of time (2-3 hours) so we can work around their naps. Anything?
Anne: Have you seen those cute tiger cubs at the zoo yet? If your girls are happy in the mornings, they can start exploring with the sun. Guntur (he's they boy, the bigger one), Melati and Maharani come out to play with their mom usually a little after 8 a.m. The zoo's Kids' Farm is nearby the Great Cats exhibit, so if you park at the bottom, there's no need to push the stroller all the way up the hill -- unless of course you want to say hi to Tai Shan. The zoo is less crowded in the morning, and the animals are more active then, too.

Fairfax, Va.: Hey Guru's!
My boyfriend's birthday is coming up and I wanted to take him to a fabulous restaurant in the DC area. I want to go somewhere really nice - have you guys heard of Buddakan in Philly and NYC? Well I want to go to a restaurant with a vibe like that......oh and I'm vegetarian and he's not! Any suggestions?
Erin: The Philly one is super, isn't it? I ate last night at Pazo in Baltimore and that has a very cool and Buddakan-like ambience. I wish we could smuggle it down to D.C.
Around here, the vibe at Mie N Yu is very sleek, but the food is pretty far from fabulous.
Indebleu is delicious, Oya is cool, but you might want to check out Lima for this occasion.

Washington, D.C.:
The Gurus's dislike for Ann Taylor Loft is well known. I'd love to break away from that but don't know where to go. Could you help point me in the direction of an alternative? I've been looking and looking and looking for a store that carries petite sizes (not just short pants, tops too) for those of us that aren't 40. (To clarify, I mean petite as in short, not waifish.) Can't I be short and stylish at the same time? Thanks!
Janet: Yes, you can be short and stylish at the same time, but it can take a little work since so many stores have closed their petite sections. Have you tried Nana on U Street? They carry some vintage clothes, which tend to have smaller proportions. Also, Muleh on 14th Street, which carries lots of very stylish designers, not only stocks petite sizes, they'll also special order.

Washington, D.C.: I know I shouldn't go see "Jackass 2" this weekend ... it's like a trainwreck ... just ... can't ... help it. Thoughts?
Jen: I completely relate to what you're saying. I haven't seen "Jackass: Number Two," mainly because I prefer to watch those movies on DVD. That way, if they induce uncontrollable vomiting, I'm much closer to home.
On one hand, I find the whole premise of "Jackass" as a movie a little ridiculous, since it's really not a movie in the traditional sense. But I also understand the appeal of the infectiously idiotic behavior. And, I have to admit, I think Johnny Knoxville is sorta hot.
In short, my advice is this: Compromise and see a matinee. That way you're not spending quite as much money on the ticket and perhaps fewer people you know will spot you going into the theater to see it.
_______________________
Washington, DC: Quick question for you gurus.
I have tickets for the Tribe show at Love tomorrow. I was planning on showing up around 7:00. Should I anticipate any problems by showing up then and would you recommend arriving earlier?
Fritz: I'll check on this again for you, but from what I heard, Tribe isn't going on until closer to 11. If you want to show up early and stake out a spot, feel free to do so. Since possessing tickets let you skip to the front of the line, I'd think you'd be cool arriving at 9:30 or maybe even later. Depends how long you want to hang out at the club and sip overpriced drinks....
_______________________
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: anyone know of a DC establishment where you can order a hot mug of 'European drinking chocolate' (not just regular old hot chocolate)? or shops that sell it to make at home yourself?
Erin: I go for the thick chocolate goo at Murky Coffee , but Dean & Deluca has a stand-up version. For purchasing, I love Marie Belle and Jacques Torres. You can scoop up the latter at Balducci's.

Washington, D.C.: Dear GOGs-
Help! I need a suggestion of a bar where some friends & I can listen to Jazz on Friday night. We are not Jazz connoisseurs and would prefer to not have to spend a lot of money. But we'd like to hangout, listen to great music and really get a feel for the Jazz experience! Your advice is greatly appreciated!
Rhome: You don't need to be able to transcribe Coltrane solos to enjoy a night of jazz and you also don't need to come out of your pocket. You can check out some jazz in the Caverns on Friday night and feel historically aligned in the process. There are a lot of frugal options around town for jazz but they're usually during the week. Along with the Caverns you should try out U-topia .

Eli Manning:
Hi GOGs -- I'm starting a job on the Hill on Monday and I'm short on suits and thin in the wallet. Anywhere in DC I can find some good, used men's suits? Are thrift stores the best bet or what?
Janet: Try some thrift stores . Anyone out there know about any very good deals on men's suits?
_______________________
Montsouris: Apparently a new restaurant on my street opened. I haven't even seen Montsouris! What is it like? Have any of the GoGs been?
Erin: Montsouris just opened yesterday in the old Johnny's Half Shell space in Dupont. Good eyes for spotting it behind the scaffolding. It's a French bistro from the folks behind Montmartre on the Hill. If the big sister is any indication of how the food will be, this is going to be one super bistro.
_______________________
G-town Buckeye:
Alright, I've read through your list of places to watch football, but can you please tell me where I can watch the Ohio State/Penn State game on Saturday amongst fellow Buckeye fans? Anywhere in Arlington would be great.
Janet: Don't have a clue about where you can skydive, but you can certainly find your share of buttons at Bruce Variety , along with a lot of other stuff you probably haven't seen in years, in Bethesda.
_______________________
Men's Suits: When I was in grad school, all of my short-on-cash guy friends got their suits at Sym's. Have fun on the Hill!
Fritz: And you know, an educated Got Plans? reader is their best customer.

Needlework shops:
Hey, Gurus! Someone wrote in a few weeks ago to ask about needlework shops in the area. Unfortunately, ACMoore and Michael's tend to carry limited supplies. There is a nice store in Falls Church, though, that may be of interest. It's called Needlewoman East and it's on Route 7. Very helpful and friendly staff, so the chatter should check it out!
Janet: Thanks. Hope whoever wrote in a couple of weeks ago about needlework stores is online. In the meantime, check out today's Home section in the Washington Post because it's all about sewing.

On My Own: I am on my own this weekend and looking for something different to do. I am contemplating the Italian Festival on Sunday but need something for Saturday. How about the H Street Festival? good? what Metro stop? Don't really want to do Frederick Fair or Children's Festival but would like to be outside... Thanks!
Anne: The H Street festival is a cool way to get to know the neighborhood suddenly teeming with nightlife in the daytime. There's no Metro at H Street, but you could pick up the X2 bus from Gallery Place. I'd guess it's over a 30-minute walk from Union Station to the festival area, but if you like being outside, you can make an urban hike over Capitol Hill cobblestones part of the day, too. For more tips on getting there, see the sidebar in Fritz's story .
_______________________
Bethesda, Md.: I have to post early because of a lunch meeting. BUT... A guy that I recently started dating lives in Falls Church. We are looking for a place that is an equal distance from there and Bethesda to meet for dinner and or drinks. Any suggestions?
Erin: Ugh, I'm terrible with distance and reasonable halfway points. How about Cleveland Park for the meeting point? Ardeo/Bardeo would be my pick, but Spices, Indique and Dino are all at the ready. You could also grab drinks while waiting for a table at Palena's super cafe. would be nice.
In Virginia, Arlington's Tallula could be a good bet and I'm keeping my eye on Piola in Rosslyn.
_______________________
Unfortunately Not Munich: I want, nay, I need and crave to go to a local Oktoberfest celebration. Are there any metro accessible? Smithsonian and Brickskellar had an Oktoberfest shindig last weekend but it was --gasp-- over $80 to attend. Please oh please help me locate beer served by the liter! Danke Schoen!
Rhome: Seems like you're in luck .

Washington, D.C.: My mother (50s) and my brother (11), are coming to visit me (early 20s) on the 30th of September. I'm looking for somewhere to take them during on the day on Saturday. I've lived in the District for a year now, but haven't found many kid friendly places to take him.
We've done the National Mall, Union Station, Georgetown etc- looking for something more offbeat.
(I saw the link for the National Book Festival but seems a bit too childish for my brother, I assume he outgrew his PBS stage)
Thanks!
Julia: There will be a whole young adult section at the National Book Festival that might interest your brother, but yeah, might not be exactly what you had in mind for your family's visit.
There's the often-overlooked National Aquarium in D.C., the truly awesome Aquarium in Baltimore, the Zoo, etc., but I think that some of my favorite trips around D.C. as a kid were to historical spots, like the House Where Lincoln Died and Ford's Theater. That's touristy, sure, but it's a little more rooted in D.C.
As for events, there are plenty of neighborhood festivals on that day if you don't mind driving to Rockville, McLean or Calvert County.
One of our reader reviews disagrees with me, but I think the Spy Museum is great for tween boys! If you decide to go, let us know what you think.

Arlington, Va.:
Where is the best place to get a fabulous winter coat without spending half my paycheck? Willing to drive anywhere.
Janet: Try Loehmann's, Filene's Basement, Marshall's, T.J. Max or www.laredoute.com (French online store) with great buys.

Woodley - Nice tip!: Gurus, I am a proud Woodley Parker whom is feeling a little more NYer than DCer today. You had mentioned the new Carbon shoe store in Woodley last week, I checked it out and was loving it. It is a slice of SoHo shopping on our once, food only sidewalk! So, good eye, thanks. Are there any other unknown interesting plans for my hood?
Fritz: My plan for our 'hood would be to forcibly evict the souvenir shop, preferably with pitchforks and torches.
Have you been around the corner to... oh MAN I can't think when my sinuses are clogged. Clothing/accessories store. Next to Sherry's on Calvert. Upstairs. Cute women's stuff and then occasional nod to us guys.
Someone help me out here....

Buckeye Bar: It is my understanding that Buckeye fans go to watch at Rhino.
Fritz: Yeah, I think we got our wires crossed there.
Rhino Bar and Willie and Reed's (Bethesda) are the Ohio State bars.

Washington, D.C.: A bunch of us are going up to V-Fest Saturday. We have a parking pass. Will people be tailgating? What are the crowds looking like? Should we plan on getting there really early? Also, most importantly, what's the food/alcohol situation inside the gates?
David: The parking lot opens at 8, gates open at 10, music starts at noon. People could very well be tailgating, but man, that's going to be a looooong day if you start that early. The show is not sold out and tickets are going for way less than face value on Craigslist and the like, but you can still expect to spend the day with tens of thousands of new friends. As for when to get there, it depends on who you want to see. I would want to catch Drive-By Truckers, who play at noon, so that would mean getting there pretty early. But if you're more interested in RHCP, The Who, Gnarls Barkley, etc., might not worry about getting there too early. No outside food or alcohol, but you can be sure there will be plenty of it for sale, the lines will be very long and the prices will be what you'd get at a football game or something.

Do you know where a girl can get a good challah for Rosh Hashanah this weekend? Preferably in Arlington or the District. Thanks.
Janet: Go to Whole Foods or Marvelous Market.
_______________________
Gaithersburg, MD: Two questions: 1. If I want to enjoy U Street music, where can I park (or is Metro the real answer)? 2. Is there any bar/restaurant that is a gathering place for Arizona Cardinals fans? (Yes, I know these fans are few and far between ...)
Fritz: 1. Metro is always the answer, but you can park late at the Reeves Center (14th and U) if you don't want to circle the block 14,000 times. If you do drive, protect ya neck on Swann. Bad things happen on that street.
2. Cardinals fans? Anyone?
_______________________
Bethesda, MD: I hope this one will be up your alley: Impromptu girls night out tonite because a friend is in from SanFran. We're looking for a sophisticated place to have some drinks (wine, 'tinis y'know) , maybe a bite later. SF girl is on the Hill, 1 girl coming in from VA and I'm metroing from Bethesda. Besides Sonoma (SF girl has just been) any other suggestions? Open to anything downtown, really. Thanks - LOVE the chats!
Fritz: I like the bar at Urbana -- good wine, great martinis -- and it's in Dupont, which is relatively convenient. There are booths, tables and couches that don't require reservations, so you might have room to gather and catch up. Consider the Blue Duck Tavern, too, especially if you can get one of those tables separated from the rest of the lounge by cool glass cubes.
Erin: I love the drinks at Poste and Zola. Go to Poste early to nab a good lounge table outside.

Washington, D.C.:
For the guy looking for cheap suits -- while not used or thrift, Syms up on Rockville Pike has some really inexpensive options. Wit a good hard look you can find a 2-piecer for under 100 smackers. Also, they have a huge selection of discounted blazers, which might do in a pinch if you have a lot of dark pants.
Janet: A suggestion for the guy in search of inexpensive suits.
_______________________
Bethesda, Md.: I saw a sign yesterday in front of someone's house urging us to celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day. And then there was mention in today's Style section, in the review of the Quebe Sisters, that a guy dressed like a pirate appeared in front of Madam's Organ while they were performing there yesterday. So I'm thinking: is this a very subtle campaign by Hallmark to create a new card holiday, or am I turning into some paranoid character from a Kafka novel?
Julia: It's true: Hallmark is after you, matey. Can't wait til I start getting those cards in the mail.... Sure wish this place had been officially open before the big day. Check this site for details on the made-up holiday.

Texas Hold Em: Clarendon Grill has it on Tuesday Nights
Fritz: Sorry. The question was asking about places to play in D.C., not in parts of D.C. that Virginia stole back -- er, retrocessed, so I didn't include the Grill or Whitlow's, which has poker on Sunday nights.

RE: Oktoberfest: Oktoberfest if my favorite time of year. The Maryland Brewer's Fest was a lot of fun last year, great beer selection, fun crowd, and lots of music options including a local pop rock band.
Two years ago, my friends and I did the Frederick, MD "family-friendly" Oktoberfest, and we had a great time. We each paid a buck to run the inflatable obstacle course, which looks easier than it was, you can buy beer by the bucket, and at closing time on Sunday, their sausages go for a $1 each.
Fritz: We've got both of those in our list of Oktoberfests in the City Guide. BTW, anyone joining me at Gordon Biersch for a Mass tonight?
_______________________
Warrenton, Va.: My birthday is Saturday and my husband and I are looking for a nice dinner(we like Italian)and theater show to go to on Saturday in DC, any ideas?
Erin: Happy birthday. I have a few ideas. You could go to see " Frankenstein " at the Kennedy Center. That is quite the celebratory venue. Pair it with a romantic dinner at Notti Bianche for amazing pasta. If monsters on your birthday don't appeal, " A Prayer for Owen Meany " is supposed to be long, but great. Black's, Jaleo and David Craig would catch my eye 'round there.

Washington, D.C.:
Newly engaged woman here. I recently heard about a bridal trunk show at Hanelore's and am definitely intrigued, but am not so sure how trunk shows work. If I saw a dress I liked, would I have to buy it on the spot?
Janet: Hannelore's is having a trunk show of Monique L'huillier dresses the weekend of Sept. 29. If you see something you like, you can try it on and if you like it, you can order it and they'll fit it to your measurements.

Cube Under Glass: I find Johnny Knoxville sorta hot too, why?
Jen: I don't know why we feel this way. Maybe all that getting hit in the crotch makes him seem dangerous?
_______________________
Washington DC: Hey Guys,
I am going to the Tribe show tomorrow at Love (YAY!) What's the dress code there (for girls)? What time should I get there? Should I drive or cab?
Thanks!!!!
Fritz: Y'all got it easy. Just avoid sneakers and you're fine, but you're going to a club -- don't wear a sweater-set or something.
If you don't have tickets, get there on the early side. If you have 'em, you can arrive whenever and skip the lines. We heard Tribe was going on around 11, but I'd be there before 10 to be safe.
Cabbing is easier, and avoids messes in the parking lots, but getting home can be a challenge.

Arlington, Va.: I know this is more of a Tom question - but since he was out yesterday I'm turning to the gurus, but I'm sure you can help.
My mom is coming into town this weekend and its her birthday. She loves to eat out - but doesn't get to very often due to living in rural MN. I want to take her to some place fun, moderately priced, on Sunday night. Nothing too spicy, but otherwise any type of food w/a great atmosphere. I was thinking Zaytinya - yes?...no? Where would your go-to place be for an unforgettable dinner (on a young professional's budget!)? Thanks - you guys are the best!
Erin: Zaytinya's a perfect choice. You can order a nice array of dishes while staying well within your budget. For the sake of more choices, I give you Jackie's, Cashion's Eat Place and Poste, but I think you're right on track with Zaytinya.

Response to two posts: For the Mother and the 11-year-old brother, how about a hike around TR Island? The kid can run around the trails and your mom can stroll along at her own pace. Should be perfect fall weather and a nice view.
For cheap jackets: if you want vintage, consider The Remix in the Del Rey area of Alexandria www.remixvintage.com.
Good luck.
Julia: Good call on Teddy Roosevelt Island . I really like that place.
Remix also gets my seal of approval -- not always cheap, but GREAT vintage. (I am so Ms. Popularity today: looks like a reader review disagrees with me on Remix, too. If you've been there, let us know what you think.)

Bethesda, Md.:
Ok, I know this isn't really going out, so much as going out to services, but I want to celebrate two days of Rosh Hashanah services (preferably in a Reform setting), and my temple only does the first day. Any suggestions on where I can go for free on day 2, Sunday?
Janet: If you've never been to the Unitarian church off River Road in Bethesda, I know they don't charge for first-timers who attend services. However, I'm not sure they have services on Sunday. Anyone know?
_______________________
Rockville, Md.: Do you have any suggestions for a New York Giants bar in the area (preferably Bethesda or D.C.)?
Fritz: 51st State Tavern in Foggy Bottom gives priority to all NY sports teams, including the Giants.

Washington, DC: Now that it's football season again....
Stetsons - on U Street has been a haven for Vikings fans. Stetsons closed for a while for renovations. They are back open but last Sunday did not show the Vikings game on the big screen downstairs, as they typically have done so in the past. Instead, all the Vikings fans were relegated to watching around a small TV upstairs - and even though there might be more popular team-based fans in the District, what is going on? Can we count on Stetsons - going forward - to be a nest where Vikings fans can congregate during football season?
Thanks
Fritz: THE Vikings bar: Stars and Stripes in Crystal City. Seriously. A year or two ago, they had appetizers called Duante Cole-poppers. (I know he's a fish now, but still.)

For the Fabulous Winter Coat:
For the person looking for a great winter coat on a budget, I would also suggest going to Secondi in Dupont. They have great finds in great condition and you can't beat the prices.
Janet: Also a good idea for looking for a winter coat. Yes, try Secondi.

Arlington, Va.: Hey Gurus--getting together some friends for a spooky Old Town ghost tour. Are there any bars within four blocks or so of Fairfax and King (near the water) where we could hit happy hour before the tour?
Erin: Chadwick's and King St. Blues would be my happy hour haunts. I know, I know, I'm too much.
_______________________
New York, NY: Hey gurus! I moved up to NYC a few months ago from VA. Do you know of any chats like this one that apply to the city up here? I miss you guys and still read your chats each week! Thanks a bunch...
Fritz: No offense, NY, but if we start franchising this chat, my vote is that we first expand to Got Plans? Barbados.

Janet: Barney's sends their customers who need jeans hemmed to Do's Custom Tailors .
_______________________
Arlington, Va.: I just plugged in my address to get directions to the H St festival - and the link sent me out to Topeka, Kansas! Was hoping for fun closer to home - any OTHER street festivals this weekend? I love me some street fest!
Anne: Um, yes, that is a new and horrible Mapquest technical glitch that I coincidentally like to call "directions to Kansas" and that I believe will be fixed very soon. Mapquest has nothing against H Street, it's actually just being troublesome with giving directions for events. In the meantime, if you click to where the festival will be (on H Street ), you can accurately get direction from that page . As for festivals near you, this weekend there are Hispanic Heritage celebrations at Lubber Run Community Center in Arlington and Kelly Recreation Center in Alexandria (noon-3). Every weekend, there's the festival-like atmosphere at the farmers market (Saturday morning) or the relocated Georgetown flea market (Sunday) at Courthouse.

Washington, D.C.:
For the bride-to-be asking about Hannelore's: Make sure when you go there you check out the rack of discounted dresses on the first floor that are floor models (forgot exact name for them)-- they are all half-price. I found a fabulous designer gown that I bought for my wedding. I spent more than I ever thought I would but got a $4000 dress for $2000. Good luck.
Janet: For the woman going to Hannelore's, take note of this poster's advice. What a good deal!
_______________________
Arlington, Va.: GOGs and chatters, I need help preserving the pictures of my youth! Here's the deal - I went looking through my parents pile of stuff and found slides of our family trip to Walt Disney World (long ago). I want to have photos of these pictures, but can't find the negatives. Is there a place that can develop pictures from slides?
Thanks!
Erin: Most photo shops should have no problem doing photos from slides. Ritz Camera does it, so that might be your most cost-effective bet. Chrome in Georgetown does a fantastic job with all things photo-related, but it's quite expensive, so enter with restraint.
_______________________
Matchbox?: Matchbox will be open on Sundays? WOOOOO HOOOOO! Any chance they'll start taking reservations?
Erin: Let's not get too greedy! I'm hoping that we won't need reservations (at least for a while) with all of the new space. I wonder if there was ever a time pre-expansion where there wasn't a wait.

Hairville, Va.:
Hi! I'm looking for recommendations for a safe, reliable place to get laser hair removal. preferably in Alexandria, Arlington, DC. Quality service is the main concern. Thank you!!
Janet: I am inclined to say I would go to a dermatologist for a procedure like that. Maybe I'm overly cautious. Thoughts?

Forestville, MD: Beside the Crossroads, where can me and my boo go to hear live reggae music?
Rhome: There are occasional roots shows at U-Turn. Bukom is my favorite spot for local reggae acts. Ghana Cafe mixes it up with Caribbean and west African music as does Zanzibar. Read about a great lineup of African reggae artists at the last one in the current Nightlife Agenda column.

McDream State: Hey GOGS,
Love your chats...do you guys know of any bars in town that would be playing "Grey's Anatomy" season premiere tonight? Some of us in the city don't have TVs. Thanks.
Jen: We put our heads together (which hurt, by the way) and none of us could come up with a place showing "Grey's." Some bars might be, but no one has made an effort to promote it, as far as we know.
Have to ask a follow-up, mostly out of curiosity: If you don't have a TV, how have you been keeping up with "Grey's"?

Washington, D.C.: Gurus, I got word that "Earth" (which used to be at Love Nightclub) has now moved to Ultrabar, formerly known as "Home", and tonight is their grand opening there, is this true, and how crowded will it be?
Fritz: I think this is continuing fallout from the big Masoud A.-Marc Barnes promoter split earlier this summer... Yes, Earth is moving. I'd expect it to be crowded because there's always a buzz when a popular night -- especially an 18-and-over event -- arrives to a new venue. Free drinks from 9 to 11 don't hurt, either. Here's the flyer:

Washington, D.C.: Any of you ever been to the Virginia Wine Festival? It is taking place next weekend and I'm just curious if it is worth checking out. Thanks. www.virginiawinefestival.org
Julia:
Have not been before, but I'm definitely going to the
this year. I think it's the best way to check out the wide variety of wines out there. There will be 55+ wineries at the festival. Most Virginia wines I've tasted have been too sweet for my taste, so I'm hoping that by checking out wines from all across the state, I'll figure out some vineyards I wouldn't mind driving out to on a lazy afternoon in the future.
The thing about festivals is that there's almost too much wine. You just keep tasting and tasting until you're kind of drunk and not really tasting anymore. If you pace yourself (and remember to pour out the leftovers in your glass), you might come across some great wines. There will also be food, crafts, music, etc., so I think it's worth the trip.
I
about this festival and other upcoming ones yesterday. Check it out if you're considering some of the smaller festivals as well.

Falls Church, Va.:
A few responses: Loehmanns has $10 off winter coats, $20 if you spend $200, etc. There's a great needlework shop on New Mexico Avenue near Chef Geoff's. Expensive, but awesome. Halfway between Falls Church and Bethesda is nowhere. Really, it would be quicker to drive to Bethesda on the Beltway than to find somewhere in the middle.
Janet: All right then.

Washington, D.C.: What bad stuff happens on Swann Street??
Fritz: Muggings, robberies, you know, all that bad stuff. People who work at bars in the neighborhood seem to think T and Swann are the worst in terms of crime... Perhaps I should googlemap the crime stats.

For the hair question- try Eddie's Hair Creations on Florida Avenue in Adams Morgan. It's an African American barbershop. I'm a white guy but I go there for their precise, fresh fades.
Janet: FYI for the chatter iso salon/barber who specializes in African American hair.

Girls' Nite Out in DC!: Please, please, please pick my question!! I'm in a bind and only you guys can help. I have some friends in town this weekend and have been put in charge of organizing our girls' night out. We want to dance a bit of hip-hop -- I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of Ozio (went there last time with this group). Preferably somewhere in Adams Morgan or Dupont since we're eating dinner in that area.
Thanks much!
Fritz: What night? Friday or Saturday? The future of the world depends on your answer.

Washington, D.C.: What is the deal with PS7's? Is it open yet?
Erin: PS 7's opened last week and I'm hearing positive things. I haven't made it over there, but the menu looks enticingly different. The deal is that it's owned by the former Vidalia chef. From what I've seen of the menu, lots of things appear in multiple preparations (octopus three ways).

Missing the fashion gene: re: postings on fashion - what exactly is the big deal about being stylish anyway? I figure as long as my pants aren't high-waters and my top matches the pants then I'm set. I look at other women in tailored clothing and pointy shoes and just think - ugh - too uncomfortable. The thought of buying a new bag each season seems silly. What am I missing here?
David: Ah, a kindred spirit. I salute you. Hey, I enjoy "Project Runway" as much as the next person -- probably more, to be quite honest -- but that's as fashionable as it gets for me. I don't even know what high-waters means!

Washington, D.C.: Hello --
This question is for Jen. I recently received a gift of Fandango bucks to use at the movies. I have no idea what is out there that is good other than "Little Miss Sunshine." Any good suggestions? Thanks.
Jen: Nice gift. Well, "Sunshine" is great if you haven't already seen it. I also recommend "The Illusionist."
If you've already seen both, hold on to those bucks and wait for more of this season's movies to come out. Check out our
to get an idea of what's ahead. There should be plenty of good options in the next two or three months, and your bucks are probably usable for a year at least.
Other possibility: Donate your bucks to the person with mixed feelings about seeing "Jackass." Then he/she can see it free with no guilt.

Washington, D.C.: I am hoping for your help. I am a guy in my mid 30s and am looking for a nice place, maybe the Waterfront, for a first date this weekend, any suggestions?
Anne: I just polled Erin on this, so I can say I'm not alone in not recommending eating at restaurants at the SW Waterfront or at the Georgetown Harbour, either. When you get close to water, you often just have to pay way too much for food that's not worth it, for the privilege of hanging with tourists and crowds in big places that don't feel so intimate. If you want to be near the water, Erin votes for Mai Tai in Old Town or Indigo Landing . And not near water or especially seafood-y, Al Crostino is where I just sent a friend on a third date, and she said it was just what she was looking for -- a place that didn't scream romance but gave that subtle vibe just the same.

Scarsdale, NY: My wife and I plan on visiting DC for the first time the week between Christmas and New Years. We are strongly considering the Hotel Lombardy. What do you think of this hotel? Just as important, what is the weather at that time? Can we walk around or will it be too cold? Finally, any cool restaurants in Georgetown you can give me?
Thank you very much.
Joel Ehrenberg
Fritz: I think the Lombardy is an excellent choice for a first-time visitor: safe, close enough to the sites and easy access to Dupont Circle, Georgetown, etc.
It can get COLD during December, but with highs in the 40s, it's not too bad.
Cool restaurants in Georgetown: 1789 is always a favorite. I like the cozy wine bar at Bistro Lepic, too. Nearer the hotel, there's Circle Bistro and Notte Bianchi.
Enjoy your visit, and come back to the chat closer to your trip for more advice.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus! I've lived here on and off for 6 years but still haven't been to Old Town! Husband and I have a late reservation at Restaurant Eve next Saturday (yay!) and was wondering if we might be able to browse in some shops in the area beforehand, maybe get a drink. Any suggestions?
Erin: Yes, shops along King stay open late, so you can buy toys at the Discovery Zone. If you're looking for drinks, go hang out in the bar at Eve beforehand. The cocktails there are unbeatable. Otherwise, Majestic Lounge is cute and you can nab wine at Vermilion.
Enjoy it. Eve will be sublime.

Unitarian church??:
Since the Unitarian church in Bethesda is, uh, -- Unitarian --, I wouldn't expect it to do a bang-up job at a Rosh Hashanah service. They might have a service that's about Rosh Hashanah, 'cause Unitarians are those kind of people, but it's not a substitute for a synagogue! That was the weirdest answer you have ever given. Sending a Jew to a Unitarian church for a high holiday? Seriously?
Janet: As it happens, the Unitarian Church holds Rosh Hashanah services and Yom Kippur services with Rabbi Blecker who rocks. Don't believe it, try it sometime.

Washington, D.C.: So on the Love web site you can still by tickets for the Tribe "after-party" which says it is not tickets for the concert, but the same tickets say doors at 6. What does this mean?
Fritz: This is a ticket that gives you access to every OTHER floor of the club while it's open -- between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Arlington, Va.: Now that Cherry Hill Farms is no more, is there some other place to get cider donuts reasonably close by?
Erin: No need to be starting rumors, Arlington. I chowed on cider donuts from Cherry Hill just this weekend (glazed and regular). Plus, since many people think that it's closed, you'll find a huge variety.
The owners think they may close by the end of the year, but donuts are available each day starting at 7.

Artsfoodmusicfun, D.C.: Had a great time at Arts on Foot last weekend (despite the slightly soggy weather) -- thanks for the tip! Anything similar going on this weekend??
Julia: I LOVE AOF. Glad you had a good time!
The
isn't so art-focused, but it'll definitely be a cool one to check out this weekend. You'd have to make a long (but pretty!) drive to the Savor the Valley fest, but that's another one that involves music and crafts.
Be sure to mark your calendar for the Art on the Avenue Festival in Del Ray. That one is most like Arts on Foot and well worth the trip.
Also, check out our ever-growing list of fall festivals.

Washington, D.C.: What's a fun outside daytime thang to do with my new boyfriend on SaturDAY?

River Road Unitarian:
Er - do you think Unitarian Universalism and Reform Judaism are the same thing? Not the last time I checked.

Bethesda, MD: Hey Gurus,
A couple of weeks back someone asked where to catch Hokie football around here. You forgot to mention that Kilroy's in Springfield is the Hokie House of Northern Virginia (noted by the flag over the door.) Hokie fans that bring in a cup with the VT or Hokie logo on it, any size, can have it filled with Miller Lite for just $1.50 while they watch the game on the dozens of TV's around the bar.
Fritz: Man, you have to love Kilroy's, don't you?

Re needlepoint store:
The one on New Mexico Ave is called the Point of It All, and it has actually moved. It's now in Friendship Heights, on a tiny street across from the bus barn (near where the Doll & Toy museum used to be.) It's a great store and they are very helpful. As for price, yeah, it's expensive, but all good needlepoint stores are. It's not more expensive than any others.
Janet: Thanks for the input.

Washington DC: My wife and I are going to dinner at Komi on Friday night for our anniversary. Our reservation isn't until late and our babysitter is showing up early. Do you have any ideas of something interesting and different to do before dinner?
Rhome: You could check out the Transformer Gallery , have a feast for the eyes before a feast of the table and get a good conversational appetizer. Or you could look at the funny doggies but you'd have to really be in that early because it closes at 5. Maybe you'd like to start the party early with some wine sampling for two?

Washington D.C.: Hi,
My friend is turning 24 this Saturday and a group of us want to take her someplace for dinner and drinks that is not too expensive but still trendy and hip with great food. It will be a group of 10 or so, any suggestions where we could get reservations?
Thanks,
Young but broke in the District
Erin: That's a large number to accommodate on a Saturday. How about tapas at Jaleo or Cilantro?
Grill from Ipanema, Bistrot du Coin and Mai Thai are other thoughts.

Bethesda, MD: I live in Bethesda and my best friend's in Annapolis. Any ideas where we can meet for dinner that's about the same distance for each of us?

I'd go to Annapolis for seafood this time, and have your friend drive the other way next time.

Cherry Hill Farms? Cider Donuts?: What are these yummy sounding donuts and where can I get them???
Erin: If you've got a car, Cherry Hill Farm is a 15 minute drive from Old Town. It took me like an hour to get there from the District last Saturday, but that was only because I managed to get myself trapped in the mayhem of the triathlon.
They have pies, fritters and other baked goods as well. Most of the coated donuts are too sweet, but the cider donuts, sour cream and honey-dipped are worth the trip.

Washington, D.C.: I am planning a bachelorette party on Saturday, September 30th. I need some help on the place to go for dancing. The problem is this... the bride is in her 30's and like 80's britpop/new wave + top 40. So most of the places you've recommend previously don't fit the bill. Also, the bride isn't into newer indie so Razzmatazz at the Black Cat is out. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Fritz: A quick search has shown no bars that are focusing on '80s New Wave on that date. If you went to Razmatazz and asked the DJ for New Order, Erasure, etc., he'd totally geek out on you and play most of what you wanted. Just a hunch.

Washington, D.C.: Hope I can catch you all before the chat is done. The question is: To Tribe or not to Tribe? Long time fan, but not a fan of Love as a venue for shows or overpriced drinks. Please advise. Thanks!!!
Rhome: It is a tough one, but it can also be somewhat interesting when you go to Love for shows like Kindred or Amel Larrieux and see the pockets of progressive folks glomming onto each other for comfort as they float in the seas of excess. I've shied away from many shows at Love because I just can't cope with the cattle like front door treatment, the interminable wait time and the jiggy crowd pageantry but I've also really enjoyed a FEW shows there.
This is Tribe though. A TRIBE CALLED QUEST. A night like this calls for a game plan. Roll with your friends so you can keep each other company. Wear comfortable shoes. Get there early. Get some food and drinks in you. Find a good spot on the dancefloor where you can weather the eventual crush of folks as the room fills and where you can commit to actually getting your boogie on since you might be waiting a while. You can do it.
It's worth it and not just because of Tribe. I guarantee that you'll enjoy the Procussions and Rhymefest is my favorite not-new-but-new-to-most folks rapper this year who isn't Lupe Fiasco.

Washington, D.C.: Hey GOG,
Where can I get a great burger and a milkshake in DC?
Erin: The best burger/shake combo is clearly Elevation Burger, but that's not D.C. The Guru-approved burger sheet can be found right here . Fritz loves the shakes at Ben's, while I go for Gifford's and Thomas Sweet.

Hi Gurus: I am hoping to get together with some friends tomorrow night that I haven't seen in awhile. We're looking for a place to eat dinner and hang out in a loungy type atmosphere but where we can still talk and have a drink. The restaurant does not have to be at the same place as the lounge. We are looking to stay in the Dupont/Farragut corridor to accommodate red liners and orange/blue liners. We've already done Gazuza. Places without cover charges are a plus. I'd appreciate any suggestions!
Fritz: Karma Lounge at 19th and I is underrated, I think, with good cocktails and a relaxed vibe. There's no cover. I also like Le Bar in the Sofitel for just this sort of get-together -- very chic '30s French Art Deco vibe, long cocktail list, attentive bartenders (sometimes).

Woodley Park, D.C.: Regarding Remix, accessories have no size tag (okay, except maybe belts). I have gotten very reasonably priced gloves, purses, wallets, and earrings there and once scored a Perry Ellis chunky necklace (Just like one by Chanel I saw in Lucky) for 8 dollars. Also, I am a size 14 and some of their selection of long night gowns can double as cocktail/Christmas party dresses when worn with a slip. Good luck to all of us "very healthy" women.
Julia: Yeah, I think their accessories are tops. My friend got this awesome brooch there. I've pulled off the nightgown as dress thing before. With the right slip, you can totally work it.
Sorry to shamelessly plug our Reader Reviews today, but you should totally
on the City Guide record for Remix so that readers will have this information when they're looking up info about the store. I think it helps to read a bunch of opinions about a place before deciding whether or not to waste your valuable time going.

Washington, D.C.: I know this is a subjective question, but is 18th Street Lounge cool anymore? I used to go a while ago, but haven't been in a year or two. Are they still in the business of being exclusive and charging cover, etc.?
Rhome: They still trip on folks randomly at the door, it's part of the brand! Just make sure your 'fit is fresh and you have women with you. It's still a fly looking space inside that has interesting DJs and an old school latin jazz band that really cooks. As for the crowd.... eh... sometimes there is a slight corn factor since the spot stopped being a secret years ago and everybody wanted to be a part of the mystique. I haven't been in a minute though. Let's get some more reports on this.

Washington, D.C.: I hope you guys can help! I've been asked by my bosses to find some good places in the Farragut/Dupont area to go for drinks and then dancing tomorrow night. Preferably not anywhere that's over-run with young 20-somethings (as most of them are mid-30's). As a late 20-something that prefers dive bars, I'd love any suggestions! Thank you!
Fritz: Dragonfly. Andalu. Ozio. Science Club.

Washington, D.C.: Hello Wonderful Gurus,
I know you get this question a lot but I'm going to ask it any way with more detail of what I'm looking for.
I'm looking to have a birthday get together (for myself...btw, is it lame to send out my own invites?) Friday, Sept. 29th. I'm just going to have a bunch of friends (about 20 or so plus gf/bf/friends etc) stop by some place for drinks and fun. I have a rather mixed group of friends---not everyone knows each other but all are friendly. Everyone is in their 20s (ranges the early to late range though), gay and straight, couples and singles, beer drinkers, wine drinkers, and plenty of hard liquer (see: whiskey) drinkers. I'm looking for a more laid back vibe then a boom-boom dancing vibe. Also not extremely expensive and not too loud at 9 or so when people start coming in.
I thought Mantis might be a good place. But I'm open to other options. Can be a bar as well as a lounge. Adams Morgan, Dupont, Farragut North area preferred.
Thanks for helping with my big bday!
Fritz: How about the upstairs at Bourbon (Adams Morgan, not Glover) or Soussi? Upstairs at Science Club might work, too. Fridays are tough because of the happy hour-to-clubbing transitory crowds, which don't follow set migration patterns. Topaz Bar could work -- Helix might be a little too busy. The back room at Aroma is usually a standby, too.
_______________________
18th Street Lounge: It can still be hot at times, but due to their WAY outdated dress code, the guys have to basically wear a uniform: dress shoes, jeans, button-down. Pretty boring. Still, always great music and good-looking women. It's just about time they realized that having a bunch of guys dressed in what they wear to work isn't really that hip or on the cutting edge. then again, neither is their recipe for success.
Fritz: I don't think they require you to wear that uniform as long as you're well put-together. I wear jeans when I go, usually trainers, too, and -- gasp -- even the occasional T-shirt. I think that a lot of guys *think* they have to dress that way, but they don't. It's not hard to coordinate an outfit.
