The Going Out Gurus
of the washingtonpost.com City Guide
Thursday, February 15, 2007; 1:00 PM

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's City Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Today's Live Discussions

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the City Guide or read transcripts of past Got Plans? discussions.

The transcript follows.

washingtonpost.com: Good timing for a three-day weekend, wouldn't you say? I know we just had one a month ago, but it's certainly time for another one. Hope everyone's thawed out and ready to chat. We're a bit shorthanded today, but we've got Erin, Fritz, Rhome, Janet, Anne and I'm David. Off we go.

Arlington, Va.: Hi GOGS!

I really wanted to see Edward Scissorhands at the Kennedy Center this week but my boyfriend does not like the ballet and none of my girlfriends were that interested. What is a play/show/theater event that my bf and I could go to in the near future that will knock our socks off?

Thanks so much!

Erin: Oh no! Did you show him the review? It's beautiful and, as Sarah Kaufman states, "it appears through Sunday as part of the ballet subscription series -- even though there is not a soupcon of ballet in it." It's truly sensational and imaginative. Anyway, I am so sorry you'll miss it, but there are lots of things to see. I'm itching to check out "Vigils" at Woolly Mammoth. It's getting rave reviews and involves a bit of flying. If that doesn't interest you, delve into the dozens of Shakespeare shows going on through June.

Miami, FL: All-Knowing Gurus!

You're my last hope before I hit town this weekend...I moved away from DC several years ago and will be back next week for a business convention. I'm looking for a couple of recommendations. First, I need a couple of options for business dinners during the week. Any cuisine is ok, but we'll need good atmosphere and the ability to have a decent conversation. Near the Convention Center is a plus. Second, I'm looking for a place to host a cocktail hour one night. Think Rick's American Bar in Casablanca. Somewhere we can show up in dinner jackets and/or suits, good drinks, Sam on the piano in the corner, etc. Lastly, I'll be arriving Sunday evening. Any suggestions for something special to do Sunday evening?

Thanks!

Erin: Welcome back, Miami and don't forget to pack your snow shoes. You're in luck with dinner spots near the Convention Center. Acadiana is a stellar choice. The noise level has never bothered me and the food's hearty enough for this chilly weather. In the general vicinity, Tosca, IndeBleu and even the meaty Fogo de Chao could work for the group.

Fritz: On the piano/great bartender/classy suits tip, I always recommend Mo's Bar at 701. Mo Taheri makes wonderful cocktails to match the jazz in the background. Thursday through Saturday, I like the little lounge at the Morrison House Hotel in Old Town Alexandria.
And on Sunday nights, for a similar atmosphere, I'd steer you to the library-like parlor of the Tabard Inn, where bassist Victor Dvoskin and guest musicians play wonderfully spare jazz in front of the fireplace while people perch on couches with cocktails. Wonderful way to end the weekend.

Eastern Market, D.C.: My husband has a real jonesing for a full English Breakfast--baked beans, grilled tomato, et al! Do the Gurus have a clue for me? Thanks!

Erin: I hope that he's not opposed to Irish breakfasts, because that's where I'm steering you. You might be in luck with the Irish brunch at Daniel O'Connell's. I know they dish up grilled tomatoes and Irish baked beans. Dupont's Dubliner is another spot for the breakfast, but I cannot remember hearing that they do baked beans. Fado is another thought, but I've never done brunch there and can't picture it in daylight. Anybody out there have a favorite breakfast destination? Suddenly potato bread sounds quite delicious.

Fritz: I have plenty of experience eating at Fado on weekend mornings, and I really like the Full Irish -- rashers, fried tomato, baked beans on toast. And you can get it with whiskey.

Dupont Circle, D.C.: Hi GoGs!

I need some restaurant suggestions for this weekend: I have two friends visiting, one who is a vegetarian, and the other who doesn't like much ethnic food and eats mostly meat, starch, and cheese items. Help!

Erin: Are you looking to stay in Dupont? Italian restaurants like Al Crostino and La Tomate can come to your rescue with pasta dishes that will suffice. Creme Cafe doesn't list many (or any) vegetarian items, but the chef's happy to devise things for special diets.
Another idea is Pizzeria Paradiso. They do soy cheese for the vegan crews and some interesting meaty toppings for those who like their protein.

Washington, D.C.: Hi GOG's - I read you religiously, but this is my first time submitting. Here goes: I'm taking my sister-in-law (and, believe it or not, close friend) out for her birthday next Saturday. I want to take her to a great lunch spot, preferably in Georgetown or somewhere equally cute (could be convinced to do Alexandria, etc., but we're city girls at heart), followed by a nice (though not break-the-bank expensive) day-spa treatment. I was thinking maybe lunch in Georgetown followed by a massage/facial at the Four Seasons, but have come to realize that's out of my price range. Any ideas?

Janet: The Four Seasons is definitely pricey. If you'd like to stay in Gtown, try SomaFit. And, I think the 50-minute massage is not a bad deal. Too bad her birthday isn't during the week, when it's less expensive!

_______________________

Brows?: Never, ever pluck, waxed etc my brows - I know shame on me... Where is the best place to go where they won't convince me to get pencil thin brows since I am new yet will still be "gentle?"

Janet: If I were a newbie like you, I'd try Klinger Advanced Aesthetics. They inspired confidence in me last time I was there having a body scrub. Just be sure to tell them to go easy.

_______________________

Broken Hearted: Have you guys heard about the "Stoplight Party" at Blue Gin tonight where you wear a color that represents your status? Red = Taken Green = Single Yellow = Maybe. Do you know the details?

Fritz: "Maybe" is stupid. You're either single or you're not. Anything else is socially awkward -- "Maybe I'm single, but not with you."
But yeah, it's at Blue Gin tonight, 9 p.m., $10 donation for the American Heart Foundation. Should be an interesting crowd, and host Jamie Hess has thrown some great parties in the past.

Tailoring in Georgetown: Since you often recommend Do's Tailor in Georgetown, I just wanted to let you know that the past several garments I brought there have been really awful. Pockets were not totally stitched down, sleeves hemmed too short, etc. I've had to bring them to my old tailor for fixing. I would start recommending somewhere else.

Janet: Thanks for the input. Who's your old tailor?

9:30 club: Okay, I know that people have asked this before (but it's not that easy to search through those old transcripts). I'm going to the Lily Allen show at 9:30 tomorrow, and I have two questions. First - is there somewhere good to eat close by? Second - What's the parking like? The 9:30 web site makes it sound like there's miles of safe parking nearby.

Thanks, guys! You're awesome!

David: Parking might be tricky for tomorrow night's show. I was down there last night and there's obviously lots of ice/snow on the streets, so that means there will be fewer spaces, especially in that alley on 8th Street where lots of people go. I don't think there will be any serious melting before tomorrow night. Plus the show is sold out, and it's a Friday night. Could be tricky. If $10 doesn't mean that much to you, you might just want to park in the lot run by the club. I hate Metroing to shows there, but I just might do it tomorrow to avoid the hassle.

Erin: Food-wise, it depends how much time and adventure you've got. I love the Ethiopian restaurants down the road on 9th and U streets (especially Etete), but Negril up Georgia is a fast idea if you're low on time.
Small plates at Bar Pilar are a bit of a hike, but perfect for variety. If you're looking to stay nearby, hop across the street for a burger and frickles at Duffy's.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,

Bit of a typical question, but wanted your all-knowing up to date opinion for this one! A friend of mine's bro is coming into town tomorrow and we want to show him the best DC has to offer. He has requested "DC's hottest club and table service" This is not exactly my area of expertise. Any suggestions? Dragonfly and Five had been suggested so far, and I am not so thrilled by either.

Thanks in advance!

Fritz: If money's no object, I really like the bottle service at Fly. Good atmosphere late on the weekends, guaranteed admission, fun crowd, great music. But it's a $600 minimum for 6 people.
Depending on what kind of music you like, I might try getting a table at Love or kstreet. Modern is okay on weekends -- young crowd, lots of students -- but the bottle service is generally pretty good.

Washington, D.C.: Please help! I would like to get my husband a smoking jacket for our upcoming anniversary. I have searched high and low online to no avail (tobacconists, department stores, costume shops, etc.). There are a few options on eBay, but where the size is right, the style isn't (which is, of course, the same problem I would have at a consignment shop or thrift store). Any idea of any stores - locally or online - that sell good old-fashioned velvet smoking jackets?

Janet: Hmm, a smoking jacket. Love the idea. Will he actually wear it? Anyway, my suggestion is to try Meeps and Aunt Neensie's in the U Street Corridor. And while you're there, look around. You never know what you'll turn up when you're scouting.

Downtown D.C.: Is The Flying Scotsman still open? Last time I went by and called--which was, granted, a while back--there were not signs of life. But the web site is still up and running.

Fritz: No. It's now a bar called Hamilton's, which took all the Scottish stuff off the walls and put up more TVs. Place has some decent happy hours, which is the only thing to recommend it if you don't work in that neighborhood.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,

I realize this is maybe more of a Tom question, but my boyfriend and I are looking for a good buffet brunch. He used to love the BBQ Brunch Buffet at Old Glory, but they no longer do it. We would settle for any non-hotel buffet brunch with decent to great food that we can go to in jeans and a t-shirt. This is sort of a going out question because we are in need of a good spot to nurse our hangovers.

Thanks so much!

Erin: Of course this question applies to us. Sticking within Georgetown, Filomena and Paper Moon both have Italian buffet spreads. If given the choice, I'd go for Filomena first. To go for standard American brunch fare, hop over to Arlington where Whitlow's is the go-to place for a big buffet brunch.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Love your discussions! A friend and I think we deserve some much-deserved pampering this weekend. Any suggestions for a good yet affordable place to get a massage in the Arlington/Alexandria area? I've been to Sugar House Day Spa & Salon before and liked it but wanted to try something new.

Janet: I've been thinking about massages and facials all week. I've had good experience at Natural Body Day Spa . Nice, clean and serene.

_______________________

Potomac, Md.: Rescue Me.

I am meeting an old flame from HS for dinner. We both happen to be in town for a convention and are getting together for dinner. I need a private, cozy place that will help me sweep her off her feet & show her that I never stopped loving her.

Can you help me out?

Erin: How about a cozy booth at Al Tiramisu? Call ahead and ask to reserve a special nook. If you can get into Obelisk, that's another safe bet. Over in Georgetown, 1789 and La Chaumiere are both cozy, warm spots with fireplaces. Good luck.

_______________________

Crystal City, Va.: Can you suggest a place that has a great (cheap) drink special for tonight in DC or VA?

We always go to Front Page, Madhatter, or Cafe Asia and we're kind of sick of it.

Thanks!

Fritz: Okay... The tried-and-true answers are the countdown at the Pour House ($1 beers until 8, $2 beers until midnight, $3 beers until close), which is crowded with political types, and $5 martinis at Tapatinis, with -- woooo boy -- free Jack Daniels from 10 p.m. on.
If you like Front Page, you'll love Lucky Bar, with $2 Buds until close.
In Virginia, there's not much I'm nuts for in Crystal City, but I'm still a fan of Southside 815's discount beer and cheap food ($1 mini pork sandwiches, 35-cent wings) in Alexandria. Rustico, too, has a good happy hour, with $2 High Life, a buck off any draft and that warming fireplace.

Lily Allen: Hi GoGs-

I'm so psyched- my boy and I snagged tickets to the Lily Allen concert this Friday! What time should we get there and when will she come on? Who are the openers and are they worth it? Also, what will the crowd be like?

Thanks! Happy Thursday!

David: Doors will open at 7:30, Lily should hit the stage around 9. There's no real opener, per se, I don't think. I believe Aaron LaCrate will be spinning for the hour and a half between doors and show time. He's one of the top booty music/gutter DJs from the Charm City up I-95. Check him out on MySpace for a taste of what to expect; he's got a crunky remix of "Smile" up there, complete with a picture of Lily in an old-school Orioles cap. How adorable. As for what kind of crowd to expect ... I think it'll be an interesting mix. It's sponsored by MTV, but there should be a pretty big "Pitchfork contingent" as well. Lots of bloggers, I'd guess. Oh, the bloggers that will be there.

Washington, D.C.: I was at the strong ale tasting at RFD last night and had a great time. Some of those beers were terrific, and I discovered a couple of new breweries. I think many of the brewers who introduced their concoctions were speaking more to each other rather than the lay audience, but it was still interesting. I was amused to note that the brewers from Baltimore and Frederick made it in, but the two from suburban Virginia were no shows! I hope those who go tonight find it as enjoyable.

Fritz: Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I think you're right about the brewers kind of talking to each other -- if you don't know much about hops or the brewing process, you're going to be scratching your head -- but I'm glad to hear you have new favorite breweries. Anything in particular strike your fancy?

Washington D.C.: We had an exquisite meal at the newly opened Indique Heights in Chevy chase. The restaurant is so beautiful and would definitely recommend this place to anybody. I don't remember you all discussing Indique Heights or recommending this place...

Erin: I love Indique Heights. I wrote about it when it first opened and have recommended it when applicable. Glad to hear you've found and fallen for it. I'll take as many quality Indian establishments as I can find. Also, if the brunch-seeker is looking for spice, they serve up a weekend Indian buffet.
Please write a reader review and share your experiences.

re: 9:30 Club: What about Pyramids at 6th and Florida for preshow dining?

Rhome: I LOVE this spot. But there are only like 3 tables in there. Well prepared, no-frills and well seasoned north African dishes with some Indian. It's a real neighborhood joint. Now the spot is blown, what with these kudos and all the redevelopment going on in that neighborhood. But alas, keeping secrets is not the Guru way.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Please help! I have an important job interview coming up and I need a professional (adult) haircut. Any recommendations for a place in DC (Metro accessible) where I can just sit down and say that, and come out with something low maintenance and beautiful? I'm the kind of girl who spends 5 minutes or less on hair each morning.

Janet: You do know that it depends upon your hair, right? Do you want a trim or a whole new look? In any event, Bang gets good reviews from my colleagues.

David Gregory on M Street: Hi GoGs,

Do you know if there is a happy hour at David Gregory (yep, the hotel restaurant/lounge/bar) on M Street? If so, do you know when and how it is? My guess is that the scene is pretty quiet and lowkey or filled with business-suit types (how's my spinning of assumptive stereotypes?) but I'm still curious about the place. I've actually heard good things, even though few and far between - since it seems not many people go there. What's your take?

Thanks,

Fritz: They do indeed. I like the pizza with bacon and pesto and the wines by the glass for under $5. Martinis and the special appetizers are all $5. Empandas are tasty, but skip the too-small plate of wings.
My favorite thing, though, is that happy hour runs until 10 on Tuesday (instead of 7:30) and from 5:30 to 10:30 on Saturday.

_______________________

Chevy Chase, D.C.: I, too, went to Do's on your recommendation to have a dress and a pantsuit taken in after I lost weight. A lot of money later, I don't think the dress was taken in at all and the suit is still too big. They were nice, but I was so disappointed with their work, especially considering it cost a fortune.

Janet: My apologies. Won't recommend anymore, and in the meantime will scout out some other options. Thanks for the input.

_______________________

Euro: For the person asking for DC's best club and table service, if its a Saturday night I would recommend Spank at 1223 for sure. But again depending on what type of place--its more of a Euro crowd with House music. Fridays are Play, Platinum (VIP level) and Chorma (VIP at Home)

Fritz: Not tomorrow, though -- it's the big Mardi Gras party. And yeah, table service is the only way to go at Play -- too crowded otherwise.

Woodbridge, Va.: Dearest GOGs, I will have my family in town this weekend... what, oh what, can I do with a group that includes an 80-year-old grandmother and two 18-month-olds that need to do a little running around? I was thinking of hitting the American Indian Museum, but not sure how much walking around g'ma can do. Any suggestions at all are greatly appreciated!

Anne: American Indian Museum is a good call: I bet it won't be as crowded as some other places on the Mall, and it's easy enough, if you're driving, to drop Grandma and company off and then rejoin you after parking. The outside has ramps, and first-come, first-served wheelchairs are right inside the entrance. Normally, I'd say the outside of the building would suit the toddlers well too, because there are big rock sculptures to engage them and the Mall is right there, but the Mall today is still covered in the white stuff. Although it is likely more crowded, Natural History would also be good, because its Hall of Mammals is manageably walkable and appeals to all (and has nice ramps, too) and the kids could take a break and burn off some energy in the Discovery Room.

_______________________

Bethesda Brainiac: I need a date place. She's super smart and cute. I want somewhere I can challenge her smarts. Do you know any place/bar where we can play Cranium, trivia, or board games and have a beer?

Thanks.

Fritz: Bedrock Billiards or Atomic Billiards are my favorite board game spots. Nothing like playing Connect Four and drinking microbrews on a date.

_______________________

JMH: Fritz - Thanks for the compliment! You know I follow the GOG's religiously! And we hope to fix that Broken Heart tonight!

For people that want to rsvp they can log on my web site at www.jamiehess.com

Fritz: Oh yeah. Forgot to tell people to RSVP for tonight's Red Light/Green Light party. You can do it on the site below or via Late Night Shots, if you're a Tucker.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Strong ale tasting: The Dogfish Head Burton was a surprise. The brewer said it combines an English strong ale with an IPA. Given that I don't generally care for IPA's, I was impressed with its mild bitterness. And Franklin's Imperial Stout was like a mocha shake. It was also interesting to compare the District Chophouse's Dopplebock with Gordon Biersch's Baltic Porter.

Fritz: THEY BROUGHT BURTON BATON???
Now I'm really mad about missing that.
Good to know Franklin's made an impression. Too many people sleep on that place (including me), but the beers I've had there have generally been very tasty.

_______________________

Lingerie: Romance for the Senses Follow-up: Dear GOG's: I followed up on your suggestion about Romance for the Senses. I went there on Saturday and the store is closing down. They did point me out to an event where they and a few other stores were having sales, but alas no chemises left. Pretty frustrating experience. To make up for it my husband took me to Kingsbury Chocolates and we had the best hot chocolate! And the next day he surprised me with their truffles. You can really taste the difference between them and chocolates you get from CVS. If you want to impress your Valentine next year buy from Kingsbury Chocolates!

Janet: Glad that something worked out for you, even though it wasn't the lingerie. If you're still looking, try Coup de Foudre .

_______________________

Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: David, to me you're like Vincent the video guy on Seinfeld. That is, I can always rely on your recommendations. So, who should I see this weekend?

David: Hi Dad, you know you can just e-mail me if you want to know what to do, right? Anyway, I'm going to see Lily Allen tomorrow, probably against my better judgment, at least based on her recent performances on SNL and Conan. I'm still holding out hope, though. Sold out, though, so lotta good that does you. If you're feeling adventurous, I say head to Jammin' Java for the Vandermark 5. They are as big as it gets in avant/free-jazz circles, which looks kinda funny to type out. It's certainly much different than the usual Jammin' Java show, that's for sure. That's my hott pick for this weekend.

_______________________

Bethesda, Md.: Hi Gurus! I'm housesitting this weekend just off U Street and I'd love to take advantage of the neighborhood. What must-visit places do you recommend? (And is there any place especially good for brunch and vintage clothing?)

Thanks!

Erin: You have to hang out at Busboys and Poets for a bit. Grab coffee or stop in for their casual brunch. I love the vibe there and the events schedule offers poetry slams, film festivals and some interesting discussions. Otherwise, Saint-Ex, Pilar and Creme have notable brunches.

Janet: For vintage clothing, check in at Meeps and Aunt Neensie's. Also Nana has vintage.

_______________________

H Street: I thought The Pug was opening soon. Any idea if it's true?

Fritz: Despite the snow and lousy conditions on Tuesday, the Pug officially opened. I just wish I didn't have a cold.
Sadly, there's no jukebox, though. Tony thought better of it -- too many people playing bad music at Capitol Lounge over the years -- so he says he's going to be playing music off his laptop.

_______________________

Dupont Circle, D.C.: I'm giving my mother for her 50th birthday next week a D.C. themed gift. Since she it will be too early for her see the cherry blossoms I'm thinking of buying her a notebook with cherry blossoms on the cover and possibly flowers similar to cherry blossoms. Is this possible to get? Thank you!

Erin: You should check for that sort of thing at Pulp.
I don't know if you like buying online, but there are awesome cherry blossom items at Etsy? I love that site.
I know this is of little help because it's currently out of stock, but I fell in love with this wallet which would go nicely with this purse.

_______________________

Northwest, D.C.: Why does David "hate" taking the Metro to the 9:30?

It's only a couple of blocks from the east exit from U Street. And even though some of the buildings are abandoned/under construction, it's a perfectly safe walk - especially prior-to and post show.

Just curious, as it seemed an odd statement given the lack of parking, icy roads and snowed in parking spots. Not to mention the fact that many 9:30-ers are going to be having a bevvy at the show.

Finally, in my opinion there is a far greater chance of having your car broken into while at the show, than being mugged going to/from metro.

David: It's strictly a time thing. It takes me 15 minutes to drive to the 9:30 club. If I take Metro, I have to walk to Metro (in the cold), wait for a train, transfer, wait for another train, etc., and then repeat the whole process going back. Ends up taking closer to an hour each way. It's certainly quite safe, especially for a 9pm show on a Friday night. That wasn't the issue at all.

_______________________

Hyattsville, Md.: Once a week, I am near Dupont Circle around dinner time and want to get good take-out soup (not loaded potato or Asian variety). Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

Erin: My first inclination when I'm craving soup is always to hit Breadline. Their soups amaze me. That's a bit far from Dupont, though. In the immediate vicinity, Teaism's got several types (lentil might appeal to you) or you could get a carton from the fridge at Marvelous Market. Anybody have any soupy suggestions for the Dupont area?

_______________________

Washington, DC: What's this I hear about Vegetate serving alcoholic drinks now? Please tell me its true...

Fritz: Yep. I think I mentioned this on the blog or the chat recently, but Vegetate got a provisional liquor license (full version to follow next month). The cocktails I sampled were tasty, and there are some solid South African wines on the list. Check it out tonight between 6 and 8 for half-price small plates, or on Wednesdays when Dave Nada is in the DJ booth. That cat is dope.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus!

This might be more of a Tom question, but I've been having a craving for oysters - where should I go??

Thanks!

Erin: I usually go for Hank's Oyster Bar. The new happy hour special makes it even harder to resist.

Washington, D.C.: What is a bride-to-be to do about backne?

Janet: Get thee to a dermatologist way before the wedding.

Washington, D.C.: Natural Body Spa has great affordable massages. Ask for Mary, she's amazing.

Janet: For the chatter looking for a day spa in Arlington, thumbs-up for Natural Body Spa.

Washington, D.C. : Regarding the brows question. I used to wax all the time, but then I found a great spot that does threading! Called Threads on L St NW between 15th and Vermont. Out of all the places I have gone (lots) they do the best hands down! The cost is super affordable ($12 for brows). Highly recommend.

Janet: We hear good things about Threads, too.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Any suggestions for a great Thai restaurant where I can take my mom when she visits in a few weeks? Along the same lines, are there any restaurants that offer really good Asian noodle bowls (along the lines of Nooshi, but with better dish options?)

Erin: Can you take her to Arlington's Bangkok 54? That's my favorite destination. Within the District, I'd vote for Simply Home.
I'm kind of at a loss for the Asian noodle bowl answer. There are some stellar noodle dishes at Chinatown Express, but I have heard even better things about Bob's Noodle 66.

H St Resident: Re - The Pug - it opened on Tuesday! There was a great crowd for most of the night. For those that like "dive beers" - they are serving Schaffer! H St was hopping on Tuesday (even though the weather wasn't great)- the Pug and Rock and Roll Hotel were both very crowded.

Fritz: Yeah, forgot to mention this: Schaeffer in cans for a buck! All the time! Not just at happy hour!
But Natty Boh costs $3 a bottle! It's like, dude, everyone in Baltimore does it for $1, why can't we?
I'm hoping the Pug stays crowded. I have a feeling it's going to get more of a drop-in-for-a-beer crowd that the neighboring Palace and Red and Black, which are very event oriented.

Annapolis, Md.: Coming in late, but hope you can help. I'd like to watch the rugby on March 24 - the 6 nations. No one in Annapolis is showing it. Do you know of any places in DC where I can catch it?

Fritz: I just blogged about that, and you have quite a few options.

Re: Buffet Brunch: Nothing is better than Perry's for Sunday Brunch. The drag queens are hilarious and the food is gourmet!

Erin: Oh yes. Drag queen brunch is a must-do if you're in the spirit.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Strong ale tasting: So any idea where you can get the Burton Baton around here? The sales guy from Dogfish Head was very vague..."a good beer store".

Fritz: I have a feeling you can get it at Cleveland Park or Chevy Chase.
But what's really good is the aged version -- seriously -- that you can get at the Dogfish Head Alehouse in Gaithersburg.

Re: Edward Scissorhands: I just made my boyfriend read the review and your answer and we just bought tickets for tomorrow night. I MAJORLY OWE YOU ONE!

Friday night happy hour: Hi Gurus,

It's my girlfriend's birthday tomorrow, and we were planning a happy hour party for her at Five. However, we just learned that Five does not have its happy hour on Friday nights. Can you recommend a good happy hour place, not a ton of people, good music, in DC?

Thanks for your help

Fritz: Science Club is always a good bet if there's nothing going on there -- I popped in for happy hour a few weeks ago and there were World Bank and charity happy hours taking over the basement and the upstairs. Call first.
Also, if you were thinking of Five, you might want to head across the street to Dragonfly's happy hour. Great electronic beats, $4 sushi rolls, $5 beers, $5 martinis. Runs from 5:30 to 7:30.

RE: Edward Scissorhands @ Kennedy: Hello GoG's--

I just got on to read the chat and saw the 1st post. My boyfriend took me to see Edward Scissorhands last night and we BOTH loved it! We are not huge theater fans (it was my 1st time at the Kennedy Center with him in the 4 years we've been together)--but we wanted to try something new! Just wanted to let all the other people out there know that it's captivating---especially if you like the movie! Thanks again to my wonderful boyfriend!

Erin: Another endorsement to back me (and the Post's reviewer) up. Thanks.

Dogfish Head: Speaking of Dogfish Head, any word on an opening date for the Falls Church location? Thanks!

Fritz: They were shooting for March, but it seems that the good-old Virginia ABC has delayed things. (Surprise.) Word from Joe Hospital, the managing partner with the best name in nightlife, is early April.

Bethesda, Md.: Hi Gurus,

I'm trying to pick a restaurant to celebrate good news at work with friends. Something casual enough you can wear jeans and a cute top, but the food is still top notch. Suggestions? Some favorites are Zaytinya, Atlantico, Rasika, Jaleo, etc., but I'd like to try something new.

Thanks!

Erin: Brand new is Central Michel Richard. It's a very busy scene, but I really like it. Cocktails are top-notch, they have extensive charcuterie offerings and you can't go wrong with the chicken dishes.

Cherry Blossom Notebook: I saw some nice ones at the National Gallery's gift shop (west building) last week.

Erin: Great call. That's usually a first stop-off point when I'm loading up on stocking stuffers.

Philadelphia, Penn.: Hello GoGs, please pardon the lameness of this question (you seem to get a similar one every week). I've perused the City Guide, but nothing jumped out at me. I'm only here for Saturday and Sunday (seeing "Into the Woods" Sunday night) and what to do!? Didn't call Komi in time for a reservation, but would be willing to eat very early or late Saturday to make up for that at another interesting place worth the money. What are the Chinese New Year festivities on Sunday all about? Is it like the Cherry Blossom Fest street fair thing? Currently the Saturday plan only includes U Street shopping and a walk from there to the hotel in Dupont, but are there some must see goings on this weekend? Thanks so much for any tips!

Anne: Hi, Philly, welcome to town. I like your Saturday plan so far. For Saturday night, are you looking for more theater? There are still tickets for Edward Scissorhands at the Kennedy Center, and it's just in town for a short run. Were you interested in Komi for the menu, the chef, the space? Depending what you're looking for, you might like Al Crostino for the intimacy, Blue Duck Tavern for the menu or Viridian for the nearby vibe. I'm not sure about Al Crostino, but the other two have res available on the early and late-side. Blue Duck is an easy cab ride from the KenCen, and Viridian is basically attached to the Studio Theatre, so you could easily go see a show there, too. The Chinese New Year Parade is much more compact than the Cherry Blossom street festival; the action is all in the dancers moving down the block by the Verizon Center. Depending on the chill, expect the sidewalks and restaurants to be as packed that afternoon, especially with families.

Washington, D.C.: Hi! My fiance and I are going to Zengo for dinner on Saturday night. We are fairly new to DC and we need some suggestions for a fun bar/lounge to go to afterwards that is in that area. We are in our mid twenties.....Thanks!!

Fritz: Consider Indebleu for a long list of exotic cocktails and a sceney crowd or Zola for something a little more intimate. For dancing, there's a Mardi Gras party around the corner at RNR that should draw lots of people in their 20s. We have all the details in the Nightlife Agenda column.

Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus,

Given that it is going to be frigid outside this weekend, I thought I would go to a nice coffeehouse and read for a while. What would you recommend for a nice coffeehouse that is metro accessible?

Thanks!

Erin: You could try Murky Coffee by Eastern Market or U St's Mocha Hut.

Baltimore, Md.: Where does the dancing get started early in D.C., especially on a Thursday night? Since I live in Baltimore, my weeknight D.C. dates have to end by midnight at the absolute latest. My default setting is '80s Night at Heaven...any other suggestions?

Rhome: Dance nights don't really happen early in this town unless it's Daylight. I wish it weren't always that way but it seems to be psychologically ingrained. You might want to hit DC for weekend dancing and try weeknight spots in B-more like Sonar.

Washington, D.C.: you can definitely get that beer at Cleveland Park Liquor, and for noodles, there is a good pho place in Arlington, the name is escaping me, but it's on Wilson Blvd. between Court House (closer) and Rosslyn-- right near the Roadside Grill and that gas station.

Erin: Pho 75 is the spot you're thinking of. I love those soup noodles and cannot get enough on days like this one, but I figured the reader was seeking non-soup noodles. If I'm wrong, definitely don't miss Pho 75.

Re: "Stoplight Party": So, what colors would each of the GOG's wear?

Rhome: Threat Level Orange.

Fritz: Umber.

David: [Stoplight out due to ice storm]

Noodle Bowl soup: I have had zero luck with locating bowls of noodle soup at Thai restaurants out here in DC. I grew up in LA and the Thai restaurants that served noodle soup were often owned by immigrants from Thailand of Chinese descent (as noodle soup was an invention from China.) Anyway, I have had good experiences eating pho at various Vietnamese restaurants in the area. I really like Vietnam Georgetown. It's cheap and really tasty.

Erin: Thanks for the input. I grew up in LA, too. I have seasonal cravings for Asahi Ramen, which takes that college fare to a whole new and glorious level.

Washington, D.C.: Dear All-Knowing Gurus,

Are you ever curious about your readers/people who are posting questions? Or, does it all just get lost in translation through cyberspace?

I've just stepped in from the cold and am feeling numb/frostbitten.

Thanks!

Fritz: Of course. You know we love all-a y'all.

Food in Fells Point: Hey GOGs-

I went to Fells Point for the first time and really loved it - but didn't spend very much time there. I'm planning at least a return visit, if not more, and would like your top picks (not-to-be-missed) for restaurants/great food in the area.

Many thanks

Fritz: Eastern European food -- mmm, pyrohy -- at Ze Mean Bean is always my top pick, and you can't go wrong browsing the market stalls at Broadway Market. Too bad my trips to Fells Point usually involve waaaaay more beer tasting than actual eating.

Anonymous: Didn't you mention a chocolate buffet that opens on Valentine's Day? Well, VDay has come and gone - chocolate?

Erin: Chocolate. Chocolate Decadence runs every Friday through the end of March at the Ritz.

Arlington, VA: Going out Guru's, what is going on at Mister Days in Clarendon tonight? I heard about a Mardi Gras party but I don't think it's Mardi Gras yet....any info on it? As always, thanks for your help!

Fritz: It's our friends from Express with live music and drink specials! More info in (plug, plug) the Nightlife Agenda.

D.C.: Help a dude out. My dad is coming to town this weekend and it happens to be his 45th b-day, too. I want to take him to a classy bar for some great bourbon -- but the places I know are dive bars with two buck Buds. Tell me an upscale bar I could take my dad too that has great topshelf liquor...thanks, you guys rule.

Fritz: Um, how about Bourbon? 100 different types on offer, almost all of them incredibly tasty, and bartenders that are happy to recommend the good stuff.
