Got Plans?
|
Thursday, September 4, 2008; 1:00 PM
Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's City Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the City Guide or read transcripts of past Got Plans? discussions.
Submit your questions and comments before or during today's discussion.

washingtonpost.com: Guess where we're having lunch tomorrow? That's right, we and the rest of Arlington will be at Ray's Hell-Burger now that there are (slightly) extended lunch hours. Takes us back to when we got lunch burgers at the original Ray's to fuel this chat. Any of you remember those days? We are missing Fritz and Janet today, but David, Jen, Julia, Rhome, Stephanie and Anne (yours truly) are here to talk getting ready for fall. Looking ahead, we're also excited about music this weekend, lots of comedy and September exhibits. What's on your agenda?

Washington, D.C.: Mother-of-GF is in town and looking for something to do on a raining Saturday. (We were going to do the Renaissance Festival) Any fun political ideas as she sways WAY left?
Stephanie: If you're looking to mix fun and politics, I would recommend checking out Washington Improv Theater's "POTUS Among Us" at Source, which is hilarious no matter your affiliation. There's also "Picturing Politics" at the Arlington Arts Center.

Buckeye Nation: Huge game next week: USC vs. OSU, a potential national championship preview! PLEASE tell me there's a Buckeyes bar somewhere in the area?
David: This is more Fritz's area of expertise, but I'm pretty sure Rhino Bar in Georgetown is a Buckeyes spot. Anyone out there with other OSU-friendly places?

Iota, Va.: What time should I show up at Iota tonight for Erin McKeown? The Iota site says 9 pm, Erin's site says 8:30 pm. I'm sure the opening act is just fine but... Thanks!
David: I'd show up early. I saw her last time she played at Iota and it was sold out (although on a weekend). Since then she's played the Birchmere, which holds more people, so expect a big crowd for this one. The 9 p.m. time listed on the Iota site is when the music starts, but I'd get there earlier if you want to make sure you get in. You can always stop by on the early side, get your ticket/stamp then go out for dinner and come back later, if you were so inclined.

In Search of Cream of Crab Soup: I've always been a big fan of the Maryland Seafood Festival at Sandy Point Park, which, according to their Web site, is canceled this year. Specifically, I love the crab soup cook-off. So, my question is, where (other than in Annapolis -- I already have some favorites there) can I go to get my cream of crab soup fix this year? I prefer D.C. and the closer 'burbs, but I can travel a bit further if necessary. Thanks, gurus (and peanut gallery)!
Julia: I am going to throw this out to the peanut gallery. I'm really fond of the blue crab and sweet-corn soup at Acadiana and the corn and crab soup at Vermillion, but neither are pure-bred cream of crab. Chatters? While we're at it -- and because I LOVE going off topic -- what are your favorite cheesy pop songs of the summer? For me, it's "Bust It, Baby," by Plies. Fritz totally called me out a few weeks ago for rocking out to the "she's my little hood thang" lyrics in my car ... at full volume.

for the Buckeye: Check out the OSU alumni club: http:/
David: Thanks for this. And I'll paste in a submission that came in around the same time: Go Blue: I believe Ri-Ra in Arlington is an Ohio State bar. Which is why I don't set foot in it between September and January.

They say it's your birthday: Gurus, my birthday is quickly approaching and I would like to get a few close girl friends together for a weekday birthday dinner/drinks. I'm looking for something special and trendy (I'm all about chic restaurant decor along with a great menu) but also isn't too pricey. I considered Rasika, but am looking for something with a bit more of a casual feel. Suggestions?
Julia: How casual? I feel like Co Co. Sala has girls-night-out written all over it. I wouldn't say you had to dress up to go there, but I think you'd want to do nice jeans, heels, cute top. I went to Oya last night with a girlfriend to check out their $28 prix-fixe. It was actually a sweet deal -- considering they also had three bottles of wine available for around $30. I wasn't wowed by all of our dishes, but I really love the atmosphere there. Nice for a group of girls, also in the nice-jeans-heels-cute-top category.

Best pop song of the summer: Katy Perry's "Kissed a Girl" hands down. And for some reason this makes me think of that Chumbawumba song and pissing the night away. Ha! That was several several summers ago, but that's a good one too.
Julia: I'm embarrassed to admit I've been singing that one in my car this summer too.
_______________________
Cheesy summer songs: Summertime by Will Smith. Reminds me of summer and the humidity even in the dead of winter.
Julia: "Honkin at the honey in front of you with the light eyes." Oh yeah, so good. I really meant this summer's pop songs, but couldn't resist this one.

Ballston Dude: What do the kids wear to Broadway plays these days? I want to look nice but also want to factor in the rain this weekend. Fritz, my adult beverage drinking hero, any suggestions for watching EPl in Brooklyn? On a side note, anyone know why BurgerDelight is always closed when I drive by?
Stephanie: I think it depends in part on what you're seeing and whether it's a matinee or not. When I saw an afternoon show of Avenue Q, it was a younger crowd and people didn't get as dressed up as when I went to an evening performance of Drowsy Chaperone. People don't dress up for theater as much as they used to, and I wouldn't be surprised if you saw jeans, but I would recommend wearing a blazer with nice-ish pants. Although if you went more casual (just a button-down) or dressier (add a tie), you probably wouldn't feel out of place. Since Fritz isn't here and my knowledge of Brooklyn is seriously lacking, we'll have to throw Q2 out to the readers.

Bethesda, Md.: Shopping Gurus, save me! My mom is coming up for the weekend. She's the type that will buy any piece of junk that looks old. Is there a street with junk shops we can paw through? I'd rather not take her someplace with super pricey real antiques like G-town, I'm looking more for hunting through old stuff and getting a find for $5. Also, she wants to see Mount Vernon and I have no car. Is there any public transport out there or am I going to have to take a cab? A million kisses to say thank you!
Anne: For the most easily Metro-accessible junking, you'll want to take the Adams Morgan/U Street tour. There won't be anything for $5, but Ruff & Ready on 14th is the closest to what you're looking for -- a crammed shop with old stuff and then it spills out on the sidewalk and outdoors along the side/back. There's plenty of antique-but-not-Georgetown antique style shopping on U. You should also stop at Good Wood, which is a 180 from Rough & Ready in display style and price, and definitely go to Brass Knob in Adams Morgan. Public transit to Mount Vernon is possible -- it involves buses. Have fun with Mom.

Washington, D.C.: I work for a European Embassy and we have a 23-year-old intern who is fresh off the boat this week. What would you suggest for her to do this weekend to give her a great introduction to DC?
Jen: This is hardly a rocket-science answer, but when it comes to people who have never been to D.C., I always start with the gold standards: Visiting the Mall. Paddleboating in the Tidal Basin (assuming the weather holds). Maybe going to the Natural History Museum or the Newseum, if the intern is a news junkie at all. A spin along U Street or a walk down the streets of Georgetown. You probably have thought of all these things, though, right? Chatters, please commence brainstorming and share further suggestions for the Euro-intern.

Washington, D.C.: Have you guys been to a Tricky show at the 9:30 club before? Is it worth the $25?
David: I was at a Tricky show at the 9:30 club in 1998. I don't remember much about it except that it was exceptionally dark on stage so you couldn't really see Tricky and he was standing sideways (not facing the audience head-on) most of the time. He was also touring in support of an album that wasn't nearly as good as the two (or three if you count Nearly God) that came before it, so I guess it was a bit underwhelming. Still, I'd probably head to Saturday's show if he wasn't hitting the stage so late.

Columbia Heights: Oh mighty gurus, in the past you've provided excellent advice and I'm hoping you can come through for me again. It's a question you've heard before: my Dad is coming to town next weekend (12-15) and he's done all the sights before. Anything fun and dad-friendly that weekend? Music, movies, exhibits, food, anything and everything. Have car, will travel. ALSO, more specifically: my Dad lived in China for six months in the 80's and considers himself a Chinese food connoisseur. I know that D.C. is not known for its Chinese food, but if I'm hoping to impress (or at least not disappoint), where would you recommend? Anywhere in the metro area is fine. Bonus points if we can eat family style and if there's a special menu for people who want "real Chinese food" (so, you know, tall white guys from the Midwest who lived in china for six months). Thanks gurus!
Julia: This is one of my favorite questions in a while. Sadly, I can't say I have the best answer for you. I like Great Wall for their spicy dishes, so that's an option that's decidedly lacking in atmosphere. Wanna do dim-sum? Tom Sietsema gave Pacifica Cafe a really good review a few months back. It's the kind of place where you tell the owner you want the good stuff. Next weekend is super-awesome for out-of-towners: Adams Morgan Day and Arts on Foot would be my top stops.

Arlington, Va. (got to get away!!): Hi Gurus, My BF and I were planning to go to the beach this weekend but due to the stormy weather forecast, that has been postponed. Problem is, I am very, very, very restless so I just have to do something this weekend! So do you have any good suggestions on activities? The rainy (and windy) weather is a bit limiting when it comes to outdoorsy things like hiking or biking. Are there any nice 1-2 days (car)trips that can be done which are not relying on good weather? Is Charlottesville worth a trip and a hotel night? Or should the time be spent in Richmond instead? Or somewhere else, another city, another site? I am happy to drive anywhere (within 4 hours) as long as it is a nice drive and the end destination is well worth a visit and you can spend a day or so there without being bored! Help, I am going crazy here ....!
Stephanie: Having spent a fair amount of time in both Cville and Richmond, I would vote for Charlottesville. There are fantastic restaurants (check out Take it Away near UVa. for lunch and Continental Divide for dinner), a cool vibe, lots of history (if that's your thing), a great art museum and, if the weather clears up, great hiking nearby. If you want to stay in town, but you're feeling antsy, then you could always try indoor rock climbing.

Clarendon, Va.: I have heard that the Redskins Cheerleaders are performing at Mister Days tonight. Do you know if they are performing before, during halftime or after the game?
David: You have heard correctly. They are performing before the game, so that means sometime before 7pm. If you're looking for other Redskins-related stuff, John Riggins will be broadcasting from Velocity Five.

Arlington: I'm taking out my new bride on Saturday night to celebrate her birthday (we're both in our early 30s). She's been wanting to go out dancing for a while, so I have two options: late dinner at Cashion's Eat Place, hit one of the Adams Morgan dance clubs after (any recommendations?); or, dinner at Brasserie Beck followed by dancing at Lima. Which dance club option will be more happening, and age-appropriate?
Rhome: I'm leaning towards your K Street game plan. Dinner at Beck will be memorable, you just need to be amenable to house music and a velvet rope scene around peak time at Lima. Weekends are pretty wild in Adams Morgan but if were going to point you to some classy yet fun options in Adams Morgan I'd say Bossa and Habana Village.

Downtown: Hey gurus. I recently came back from a visit to a friend in California. While i was there I was able to witness her weekly organic fruit/veggies delivery straight from a farmer. Coolest thing ever. Have you heard about this kind of once-a-week delivery in D.C.? Any farmers that are willing to hike it to DC to deliver fresh organic fruits/veggies
Julia: We have plenty of CSAs that deliver to D.C. Fritz is a part of one, as are my colleagues Joe Yonan and Jane Black from the Food Section. It's hit or miss, from what I hear. Sometimes, especially this time of the year, the food is great! Other times, it's like a bag full of 47 carrots. So anyway, it depends on which farm you go with. I think most farms deliver to a central location. A friend picks up his CSA share from 16th and P NW. I don't know much about this site, but perhaps this could help you track down a good farm. If you shoot me a line at julia (dot) beizer (at) washingtonpost.com, I can get you the name of Fritz's CSA farm when he returns from Maine. Also, it's my understanding that you kind of have to sign up with CSAs at the beginning of the season, so you might have to wait until next year. In the meantime, there's always the farmers markets.

Re: Dad in town: I would like to suggest Full Key for Chinese. It may be dirty, but it is delicious. Plus about a year ago I saw Lou Dobbs eating which is always amusing.
Also, on Saturday, Sept. 13 Silver Spring is having their jazz festival which is always a good time!
Julia: A vote for Full Kee and jazz in Silver Spring.
_______________________
Dim sum in D.C. area: Oriental East in downtown Silver Spring has great dim sum. Chinese flock from all over Maryland (so they tell me) to eat there -- they have seatings at 10am and 1pm on Saturdays, I believe. There's always a huge line waiting for the doors to open. There's definitely a 'special menu' (I got real weird looks for asking for it, though).
Julia: Another suggestion.

Alexandria: Katy Perry's "Kissed a Girl" - Ugh, whenever that song comes on it makes me want to rip the radio out of the dashboard with my bare hands and chuck it into the Potomac.
Julia: Hahaha.
_______________________
Summer song: Umm... so obviously that New Kids on the Block single. I think it came out in spring, but it's so clearly a summer pop song... and TOTALLY cheeseworthy.
Julia: Wait, is it possible that I don't know the new NKOTB single? Send me a youtube link, please! (Gots to get back to the restaurant questions....)
_______________________
Alexandria, Va.: I'm not very girly and have an event coming up that I need to look spectacular for. Any idea where I can get some make-up lessons?
Julia: A few of my girlfriends have gotten their "lessons" at the Mac counter, so that's an option. You could also give Dawn at D'Brows a call. One of her aestheticians (sp? makeup people? whatever?) did my makeup for my wedding and she was great. Dawn could probably hook you up with a lesson for a reasonable price. Tell her I said hi.
_______________________
Shirlington, Va.: Hi Gurus,
So my girlfriend and I went to the Arboretum a couple of weeks ago and loved it, and she went gonzo over the Bonsai museum. Any idea on where to get the tiny-trees so she can start a bonsai of her own?
Stephanie: I'm with your girlfriend; the bonsai museum is super cool. I'm sure a lot of nurseries have bonsais, and I'm fairly certain I've seen them at Garden District and Johnson's, so you may want to start with one of those.

NKOTB: http:/
Julia: I'm only a minute into it, but yeah, this has to be the hands-down winnner. Donnie Wahlberg looks like Ice T in this video! (And I say that as someone with an unabashed crush on his brother.)
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus!
Do you know of any stores in D.C. or Virginia where I can buy tiny finished stones? My s.o. has a bracelet with small stones and a couple have fallen off recently and I'd like to help her replace them. Are there make-your-own jewelry shops or anything of that sort around?
Stephanie: I guess it depends on what kind of stones you're looking for, but Beadazzled immediately comes to mind. Readers, any other ideas?
_______________________
CSAs: Downtown might want to buy and read the WaPost Food Section. It has been doing weekly stories on what to do with all the local produce at farm markets around here all summer. It also has done multiple stories about CSAs in that section and in its online chats on Wednesdays.
Julia: It's true. The Food Section's In Season columnist Stephanie Witt Sedgwick has been writing articles (and recipes!) about the goodies from her CSA bag. You can find them all here. (And of course, we at The Washington Post Company would be delighted if you bought the newspaper.)
_______________________
Arlington, Va.: It's my husband's last weekend of freedom before his classes start taking all of his free time. I want to take him somewhere fun. We're not really bar people; we're more of the fair/festival, apple-picking, flea market, outdoor movie, nerdy-type people. Travel is not an issue. Any ideas for anything to cover one or more of those categories?
Anne: Wait, loving all that means you are nerdy? I can't speak for you, but sure, guilty as charged. If you're into a fall-feeling road trip, I vote for heading to an Oktoberfest celebration in Herndon, and you could head further west for apple-picking at Crooked Run Farm or maybe for antiquing along the way.
_______________________
Make-up Counter "lessons": I know that this isn't a going out question, but since you mentioned going to the MAC counter for your make-up, I was just wondering what proper etiquette was there. Do you just tell them that you want your make-up done for an event and they will be okay with it? Or do you have to pretend that you aren't getting your make-up done for something special? Always been curious! Thanks!
Julia: Great question. Out in Arizona, where one of my friends is from, they flat-out told Mac that they were bringing a full bridal party in for a wedding. And they all got their makeup done for free! (But of course, they all bought -- and got hooked on -- Mac's amazing mascara.) I tried to do that for my wedding, but the Georgetown Mac wasn't having any of it. Told me it was up to the aestheticians who were there that day how much they would charge. So basically....be discreet and I don't think Georgetown's giving away any freebies.
_______________________
Rockville, Md.: Columbia Heights must drive to Rockville for Chinese food. Differing opinions on which is best, I personally lean toward Bob's Noodle 66.
Julia: Yet another suggestion.

Arlington, Va.: Dear GOGs-
I will soon be moving to Silver Spring MD, from Arlington, VA. I'm not terribly familiar with Silver Spring and was wondering if you could recommend some new places to hang out. Places I love down here: Dr Dremo's (R.I.P) Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse Murky Coffee Thanks!!
David: Definitely Quarry House Tavern. Maybe McGinty's. And AFI always has cool things going on, if not exactly in the same vein as Cinema Draft House.
_______________________
Arlington, VA lass: Hi GOG's- Love all your info, and I was hoping you can help me. I'm planning a birthday gathering for my 30+ friend, who is very laid back and loves to dance to 80's or hip hop (nothing too trendy, so places like Park and Lotus are OUT). Basically, she just loves a good time! I was searching the myriad of websites, and thought the Vegas Lounge would be great. Unfortunately, their website doesn't work. Has it closed down? If so, is there any other place like it you could recommend? Thanks so much! Have a great weekend!
Rhome: Vegas is more of an R&B/Blues spot. I find that the old school band that plays at JoJo will also scratch that itch if that's what you're looking for. Otherwise, this is a good opportunity for me to beat the drum for more places where you can dance yourself silly that aren't trendy or scene specific. Most of those are one-offs tied to specific DJs and not specific venues but you can find some good consistent dance night options at Rock and Roll Hotel, Wonderland, Marvin and Saint-Ex.
_______________________
Bethesda, Md.: Hi Gurus, Do you have a recommendation for a VA winery that is good for a day trip? Thanks!
Julia: I like Tarara. They have great concerts and festivals throughout the fall. I've really enjoyed a visit to Hartwood . . . I'm just not wild about their wine.
_______________________
Cream of Crab: Chain.. with normally mediocre food... but the Clyde's branches have good cream of crab soup.
Julia: You sound like us! Beamoaning and ridiculing the local chain, while simultaneously recommending it.
_______________________
Coffee: I hear there's a new Eastern Market coffeehouse. Details?
Julia: There is. It's called Peregrine Espresso. Haven't been yet, but it's just at the corner of Penn and 7th SE and it's run by two Hill residents.

Silver Spring places to hang out: Don't forget Mayorga, if you're looking for coffee...
David: A Silver Spring coffee recommendation...

Please mighty gurus, answer my question: Hi Gurus, the guy I'm dating and I are going on a date tonight. When I asked what he had in mind he said he hadn't gotten that far. Okay. So we're both going to come up with suggestions. As the warm weather will be leaving us shortly I'd hate to stay indoors watching a movie. I was thinking eating dinner outside, maybe Georgetown waterfront, or doing anything if it will allow us some time outside. Is there anything fun a la screen on the green-esque?
Also, if its sunny on Sat vs the rain, any suggestions for a fun outdoor activity?
Stephanie: The closest thing to Screen on the Green I can think of is packing a picnic and sitting on the lawn at Wolf Trap to see Les Miserables (which is getting excellent reviews). Of course, you can always go the outdoor dinner or drinks route instead using our handy dandy guide.

Re: finished stones: If you mean those tumbled stones, I know natural history museums tend to have bins where kids can pick their favorites. I don't remember if NMNH has that, but it's worth a shot if Beadazzled doesn't have what you're looking for.
Stephanie: Another suggestion for the stone seeker.
_______________________
Mt. Pleasant: Some friends are venturing to some bars in Mt Pleasant/Columbia Heights for a bar crawl on Friday. Already on our list is Red Derby, Wonderland and the Raven...are there any other bars you wouldn't miss?
Julia: Red Derby and the Raven would certainly be tops on my list. I also like Tonic for its low-key vibe. It's not a sportsbar, per se, but it's still my favorite place to watch football games. Lots of TVs, lots of camaraderie. Even the newish renovation downstairs is growing on me. For something a little different, you could check out the bar at CommonWealth. It's more of a restaurant, but the bar's pretty nice. English beers are the highlights.

Silver Spring!!!: My comment is two-fold! First, an answer: Awesome places to hang in Silver Spring...Quarry House, Mayorga Coffee, Olazzo for Tuesday $5 martinis, Adega Wine Cellars. Second, a question: Where oh where can I help my to-be-hubby look for/try on/purchase one of those Mexican style wedding shirts...Guayaberas, they're called. HELP!
Julia: Oh my gosh! I totally meant to answer this one. I bought my husband one many years ago at the now-closed 100% Mexico. Sad! I think you could try calling the Columbia Road Discount Store and seeing if they have some available. I think the number is 202-265-6930. Unless, chatters, got any guayabera tips for this girl really quickly?

Brooklyn soccer bar: Floyd on Atlantic Avenue is supposed to be the best spot... http:/
Stephanie: A Brooklyn bar suggestion for "Ballston Dude"

Make-up lessons: Hope I get this in: Aquilano Artistry Salon on N. Washington St in Alexandria does this, and they are GREAT!
Julia: You got it in -- just in the nick of time!

Washington, D.C.: What are the top salons in the area? I'm looking for fun/funky ones? Thanks!
Stephanie: What are you looking for? Cut? Color? My best hair cut experience has been with Patrick at Salon XYZ. He can definitely do fun and funky.

Portland, Maine: Please help! I'm coming to Washington tomorrow to watch my four grandchildren (ages 9-15) and want to do something with them over the weekend (probably Sunday; I think they have sports on Saturday). Any ideas? They do a lot around the city, so something different would be great. I will have access to a car but would rather drive only for something terrific, otherwise we will use the subway. Thanks for any suggestions.
Anne: Oh, aren't you sweet! Be sure to tell them it's Grandparents Day. I know Jen just mentioned it, but the first thing I think of is the Newseum, which I think can be really powerful to high-school teens but potentially some tweens too. Yes, it's pricey, but a better deal for those 12 and under. The hard-to-get-to Kreeger Museum (because of its limited hours) is having an open house with drumming demonstrations and free ice cream. There are twilight concerts at the Black Family Reunion on the Mall, and of course, you could always thrill them by going the Imax route; one caution: "The Dark Knight" might appeal to the 15-year-old, but it's definitely not for the 9-year-old.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus! I'm meeting a client for breakfast next week and she is staying at the Hotel Monaco. Can you suggest any restaurants downtown or close to the Convention Center? Optimally I'm looking for something a little more impressive than Corner Bakery or Au Bon Pain. Thanks!
Julia: Poste (in the hotel) and Teaism (not) may be your best bets.
_______________________
Wheaton, MD: For the Chinese food connoisseur dad: As a Chinese native, I strongly recommend A&J in Rockville. It is the the only Chinese restaurant here I feel like eating at home.
Julia: Tom Sietsema's a fan of both A&Js as well.

Summer Song: Hands down: Bananarama's "Cruel Summer"

Washington, D.C.: About the MAC makeup counter. I called last winter (Tysons's location I think) and was told that you can make an appointment for a "free" makeup session, but you had to spend at minimum $40 at the store. Since Mac is reasonably priced, that's a whole lot of lip gloss. Anywho, I called the Chanel counter at Saks (Tysons) and made an appointment; I was told that I just needed to buy something (i.e. a lip gloss or nail polish, etc.). It worked out fabulously and I would definitely go back!
Julia: Thanks for the intel!
