The Going Out Gurus
of the washingtonpost.com City Guide
Thursday, September 25, 2008; 1:00 PM

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's City Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the City Guide or read transcripts of past Got Plans? discussions.

The transcript follows:

washingtonpost.com: Don't let the bad weather forecast get you down; there's still plenty to do. And if you're looking for a place to watch the debate tomorrow night, we've got you covered. Anne, Fritz, David, Jen, Julia, Janet and I (Stephanie) are here to help, so let's get to it.

_______________________

Dupont Circle: Hi GOGs! So I was talking to someone from San Fran recently who said they have "sing-along" movie screenings there. This sounds pretty fun. Do we have anything like that here in DC?

Jen: We do from time to time. A few years back, The Sing-Along "Sound Of Music" came to the Kennedy Center. (I went as Snowflakes That Stay on My Nose and Eyelashes, for the record.) The "Buffy" sing-along played once at the Avalon, too, but has yet to return.

Also, the "Mamma Mia!" sing-along is playing in various theaters nationwide, including a few around here. But there isn't a standing screening of, say, "Grease" or "Moulin Rouge" that people can go to every Friday night. There should be, shouldn't there?

_______________________

Rosslyn, Va.: So you guys work near where I live and I'm curious if you've found any good chinese take-out in the area. (Cafe Asia does not count!) Good Chinese is the one type of food we just can't find around here. And everyone loves a scallion pancake.

Julia: I haven't found anything great to be honest. As we chat, I am currently eating some steamed veggies in brown sauce from the TNR Cafe right across the street from our office. It's okay, I guess. Not among the best in the area (I am a Great Wall fan...) The biggest disappointment was having to wait a HALF HOUR for takeout.

Rant over. I did have some good luck with the Chinese Takeout in Ballston (whose name I'm blanking on) that's at the intersection of North Ninth and N. Quincy.

_______________________

Adoring Fan, Dupont Circle: AH! Thievery DJ set! What time do you think they will go on? I have a prior engagement but am planning to skip out early for this!

Fritz: I went to the last Thievery gig at Eighteenth Street Lounge -- and am going to try to cruise by this one after hitting Martha Reeves -- and they went on around 11, I think. (Sorry -- last year, memory hazy.) Getting tickets in advance is an absolute MUST this time. I mean, the lines were down the block the last time Eric Hilton DJed there solo, and he and Rob together should really get a lot more people out.

(If you're going "Thievery Corporation? What? Where? How do I ...," then you need to go check out the Nightlife Agenda for details of this Saturday's big gig.)

_______________________

D.C. in a day and half?: Hi GOGs! I'm submitting early, well, because I think I'm going home sick soon (stupid change of seasons!). Anyway, my cousin, who's never been to DC before, is visiting this weekend. She'll be here from eaaaarly morning on Saturday until late Sunday afternoon and, according to her, wants to see all the sights.

Since there's no way to show her everything in under 2 days, can you recommend the must-not-miss things to do? I've lived in the city for a while, but I keep second-guessing myself as to what a first-timer would like. So far on my list - walking the monuments in the morning Saturday since she gets in so early. I'd love some more suggestions. Thanks!

Stephanie: I feel your pain. Fritz gave me his cold earlier in the week, and I haven't forgiven him yet.

A day and a half, is tough, but check out our Visitor's Guide for some ideas. Just keep in mind that the weather could be pretty nasty, so traipsing around the mall might not be the most fun thing in the world. If you get a chance, definitely stop by the Natural History Museum for the brand new Ocean Hall exhibit, which opens Saturday.

_______________________

Capitol Hill: Is there a good place to watch the debate on Friday? Most of the bars I know will have a TV tuned to CNN but I'd want to be able to actually hear it. Location doesn't matter.

Fritz: We've got a LOT of debate-watching questions, so I'm just going to steer you to the dozens of options here, where you can find spots by location (on the Hill) or by party, with plenty of food and drink specials available.

Of course, if the debate is postponed, well, most of the deals are off, except for a couple of late-night happy hours on the Hill, and the **$6 Red Bull and Vodkas** at Gin & Tonic. As our boy Gilbert says, "Everybody get drunk and make bad decisions!"

_______________________

McLean, Va.: Hi Gurus! I am submiting this for the 3rd time. Please I need and answer! Where can I take singing lessons? I don't want a formal training, just a place to practice under some guidance to have fun. Thanks for your help!

Stephanie: Head to the Music & Arts Center on Chain Bridge right in your 'hood (and next door to my former employer, the Marvelous Market). Last I heard they offer voice lessons, and if they don't anymore, I know they can recommend someone who can.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,

I heard that one of my favorite events, Rustico's Oktoberfest, scheduled this Saturday is already postponed due to rain! Is this true? If so, any suggestions for what 5 now-planless thirsty late-twenty somethings should do in its place?

Thanks!

Mike

Fritz: Yes, it's true. We updated the Nightlife Agenda with this info yesterday, although I managed not to write "Rustico are a big bunch of babies." Personally, I think "overcast skies with periodic showers throughout much of the day" is a reason TO drink beer, not be left without it.

Anyway.

The Das Best Oktoberfest at National Harbor is going off rain or shine, since it's a covered festival, and while the lineup of 75 beers doesn't seem like it's going to be as rich or deep as Rustico's, it's still $25 for admission and 10 beer samples, whereas Rustico was going to be $5-$10 per beer.

Trying to go RTW...: Hi Gurus,

I'm in the beginning stages of selling my stuff for an RTW trip....where can I (try) and sell used CDs for a decent price? I've been up to Soundgarden in B'more, these are the ones that they didn't buy due to inventory.

Thanks.

David: CD and Game Exchange will probably take everything you've got, but don't expect much $$$ in return. Maybe try CDepot in College Park, too. There's a CD and Game Exchange up there as well, if you want to play compare/contrast. But come to terms with the fact that if you're selling stuff that Soundgarden didn't want, you'll be lucky to get $2 per disc.

_______________________

Dupont Circle: Hey Gurus, I'm hoping you can fill me in on happy hour at 18th Street Lounge. Some of us are going out after work tomorrow, and I would like to know of ESL has Friday happy hour specials? And is there a cover charge during happy hour? I think it would be great place to chat over drinks before it fills up with the usual Friday night crowd. Thanks!

Fritz: No cover (or stringent dress code) at happy hour, and I don't really remember any specials per se, but I do agree with you that it's a very cool happy hour hideaway, simply because most people think of ESL as the place to go at 11 p.m., not right after work. You can probably grab a couch for yourselves without any trouble.

_______________________

Alexandria, Va.: Help! I have been very busy and did not plan anything special for my husband's birthday this Saturday. I'd like to take him out somewhere interesting and then have dinner in a nice, quiet place. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Julia: A lot of Saturday's plans could be foiled by the not-so-good forecast. If the weather turns out okay, I think any of these options would be a good bet. Particularly this one -- the NoVa Brewfest -- which my husband would adore, as long as I was the one driving.

As for dinner, in your neck of the woods, Majestic or Evening Star Cafe could work.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: If you can truck over to Georgetown, Chu's Cafe at 3261 Prospect Street is the standard-bearer for good basic Chinese food.

Julia: Yeah, on nice days, it's actually a really pleasant walk across the bridge too.

_______________________

Chinese in N. Arlington: Try Hunan Number 1 in Clarendon (Wilson and Garfield). Plus, if you arrive early to pick up your food and get a cheap beer (I think $1.75 for a regular mug or $3.75 for a huge 32oz) while you wait!

Julia: Another shout out for cheap Chinese food.

_______________________

H St.: Fritz - Didn't get a chance to go to the Pug for their brunch last week. Did you end up trying it? How was it? Hash and Natty Boh...sounds like heaven.

Fritz: Were you reading my Facebook/Twitter updates or something? I loved the Pug's hash: A big ol' mess of eggs, bacon, sausage, hot sauces and two different kinds of peppers, served up hot from the griddle. Made getting out to the H Street Festival much better. And with some cold Boh -- the perfect before-noon beer -- my day was made.

The H Street Festival was a lot of fun, too -- if you didn't make it out, put it on your calendar for next year. A lot more oriented toward the immediate community than, say, Adams Morgan day.

_______________________

Cowboy Fan in D.C.: So this will probably be an unpopular question here in DC, but as a lifelong Cowboys fan, any bars in DC or Arlington I can go to find other fans to watch the game with?

Fritz: The Grand Slam Sports Bar in the Hyatt downtown has long been at Dallas stronghold, though you get a mix of fans, but it's pretty solidly silver and blue. (I've been there before, during the Spurrier years. It wasn't pretty.)

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Hi Gurus, my parents will be visiting this weekend, and although I had some fun plans laid out, I already threw out most of them since it's supposed to rain the whole time (bah). Any ideas? Just to give you a better idea about my folks - they are on the younger side, but my mom doesn't want to walk too much and they've already done most of the Smithsonians and monuments. Thanks!

Stephanie: Well, you could head to the aforementioned Ocean Hall opening on Saturday; it's such a great exhibit, although there's a good chance it will mobbed on opening weekend. Other options include seeing some Fraggles and other Jim Henson creations at the Ripley Center and heading to the (new) Newseum, which is definitely worth a look. For less walking, you could check out a play; this is the last weekend to see Carrie Fisher.

_______________________

Alexandria: I'm not a journalist so I'm hoping you guys can help me. I'm invited to the press opening of a new show at the National Gallery and I was wondering how those work. Is it basically an open house where I can show up at any time? How long should I plan to spend there?

Thanks!

Julia: First of all, please make sure you do have an invite. They do check your name on the door. (And because we're curious, why are you on the list?)

Anyway, let me tell you, press previews rule -- particularly those over at the NatGal. You *could* show up at any time, but I'd advise getting there early so you can score some free snacks and listen to the director/curators talk about the exhibit and its focus. You'll also hear many, many shout-outs and thank yous to various sponsors, which gets kind of old after a while, but I think it's worth it to hear how passionate the museum professionals are about their research/work.

Washington D.C.: Help! Karaoke Emergency! Was planning a Karaoke Room (ie private rooms) birthday party this saturday for me and 15 friends, but my husband thinks the place we were going to go to in Wheaton is actually a front and is now closed. So, I have 3 days to change gears/edit my Evite. Interested in going out with 15 friends all in our 30's to do something fun instead of a bar or restaurant (I don't drink). Can anyone help with more Karaoke Room bars OR some other fun suggestion for 16 people anywhere in DC or MD!! My birthday planning pride is riding on you all. thanks

Fritz: My go-to for all things Norebang is Cafe Muse in Annandale, where you and your friends can get a private room (with beer delivery service!) and sing to your heart's content.

Petworth: Dear GOGs;

Please help. I need to get a hat blocked. See, the husband has a most wonderful hat (side note, shopping advice - next time you're in New Orleans, visit Meyer the Hatter, coolest hat store ever).. anyhow, the hat needs to be blocked, because it got a bit crushed. (Yes, I'm going to buy him a hat box for the hat when I get it blocked.)

Anyhow, I seem to recall an article a year or so ago about a hat guy who could do this, but I can't find it. So, can you help? Where would one go, in DC, to get a hat blocked? (Seems to me it was in Georgetown maybe?)

Janet: I don't know per se where you would get a hat blocked, but if I were you, I'd call Proper Topper in either Georgetown or Dupont Circle. Someone over there should know.

_______________________

San Francisco, Calif.: Dear GOGs

I love good food and need help with a wonderful problem, okay choice might be a better description. I'm new to D.C. and need to decide which place I would like to go for delicious Italian food -- Al Tiramisu or Ristorante Tosca?

Thanks

Julia: Both are good, so it's sort of a tossup here. I'd go Tosca personally. Fantastic service. Tosca's the more expensive of the two, though, so if cash flow is an issue, go with Al Tiramisu.

_______________________

RE: Chu's cafe: Didn't that place close recently? I remember that I used to love it in college and was heart-broken when I found out the news. Sorry, Arlington....

Julia: Oh no.....disconnected phone. That's never a good sign. I'll investigate further, but it doesn't look good.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I bought a gorgeous pair of boots but the shaft is a bit too wide and tall for my short, skinny legs, so I am thinking of getting them altered. Anyone know of a good cobbler who can do (affordable) boot alterations like this?

Janet: I thinking that the alteration you're considering is either going to be impossible or impossibly expensive. Why don't you instead return these boots and find a pair that fits? There are tons of good-looking boots out there.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Where is a good place to drink Octoberfest-style beers and watch college football, preferably within the District

Fritz: It really depends on what you want. I'd be happy having some of Barrett Laurer's new Oktoberfest beer while watching games on the handful of flat screens in the upstairs lounge at District Chophouse, but I'm betting they don't have the full satellite packages, so you'd be stuck with whatever's on the broadcast/ESPN/Fox Regional networks. Other places with good Oktoberfests, like Birreria Paradiso and Cafe Mozart, don't have TVs.

Finn Mac Cool's has a couple of Germans (Spaten, etc.) and Americans like Sam Adams, plus big TVs and food specials.

The Brickskeller doesn't have much on draft in the way of Oktoberfest right now. RFD might, though, and they do have a number of TVs.

Anyone else want to chime in?

_______________________

RE: ESL happy hour: Just wanted to put in my two cents. I've recently rediscovered ESL for happy hour and definitely think it's worth the trip after work. If I'm not mistaken they have a bunch of house wines and a few bottled beres for $4 and there's a free spread of hummus, pita and stuffed grape leaves.

Fritz: That sounds about right. Thanks for the info!

_______________________

Founding Farmers: Gurus-- Happy Thursday! So, I was really excited about the Founding Farmers restaurant; the menu sounds like food my grandma would make. But, I disappointingly heard that it was bad food and bad service! Was this rumor just a by-product of opening week? Or is the restaurant really underwhelming?

Julia: Haven't been yet, but I'm looking forward to a date soon. (Perhaps tonight, if you're into it, E!)

I feel like I say this every week, but I think the first week is always a rough time to check out a new place. That doesn't stop me from going, but I take service complaints with a grain of salt before the place gets into a groove.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Gurus: McCain's latest move in suspending his campaign and calling to postpone Friday's debate seems like the latest in a serious of decisions indicating that he is, at least, impulsive, and possibly even a little crazy. Assuming the debate does happen as scheduled, what beer would would you consume while watching it that would enable you to concentrate on the candidates' substantive responses and ignore the fact that McCain might actually get elected because he nominated a "hot chick" as VP? I'm thinking a German Oktoberfest, but wanted to get your expert opinion.

Fritz: Just guessing at your political leanings here, I'd nominate one of the following:

Something from the Brasserie Silly (artisanal Belgian beer) or a nice English ale -- Coniston's Old Man Ale, Burton Bridge's Old Expensive, the wonderful Old Peculiar, perhaps the Witch's Brew from Moorhouse?

(I just flew in from Yorkshire, and boy are my arms tired.)

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hey GOG - I'm pumped to see Kathy Griffin tonight at DAR Constitution Hall. I'd like to meet my friends for happy hour/dinner beforehand. Any recommendation for a place nearby?

Julia: Tonic or Old Ebbitt would be my top picks. Both beat nearby Exchange in my book, but the wings aren't bad there if you just want something quick to go with your cheap and domestic brew.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi guys,

I'm going to Signature Theatre next week to see the "Lieutenant of Inishmore." I've never been there and was wondering what the eating options are at Shirlington Village. We love Italian, but eat almost anything. Is there sufficient parking for the theatre and any restaurants? Is the theatre walking distance from the restaurants there? Thanks!

Stephanie: As far as parking goes, I've never had trouble finding it in Shirlington, and I think a new garage just went up right next to Signature. You can also definitely walk from the theater to one of the nearby restaurants (or vice versa), and for dinner I think Carlyle or Extra Virgin will fit the bill.

_______________________

Modernist Society?: I'm re-submitting because I really have been digging and I just can't come up with the goods. Do you guys know who will be speaking tonight? I've scoured the net to no avail. Thanks!

Fritz: Don't worry. I saw your question. I've been trying to get in touch with Jason Mojica, who organizes Modernist Society, and he's not answering his mobile phone. I haven't gotten any info about a session tonight, so at this point, I wouldn't count on it.

_______________________

Johnny-come-lately?: How early in advance do I have to submit my question? A couple times I tried to participate during live chat but never got my questions answered. I know that it's impossible to answer everyone but do you select certain type of questions to appear in the transcript?

David: Mostly we like questions that give us make a chance to make fun of the clothes you wear.

But seriously, it doesn't really matter when you submit. We pick questions that we think are interesting, that we haven't answered a hundred times before (sometimes), or that could lead to some spicy discussion. Sorry if we've missed yours, don't take it personally.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus- I have promised three colleagues, new to the area, female and much older than I, that I would take them out after work Thursday to "pick up men." Our age difference is quite big, and I'm not really sure where to take a mixed-age crowd - I don't want anyone to feel too old or too young. Any suggestions for a bar/happy hour spot where we can all feel comfortable?

My usual capitol hill happy hour deals might not be the best place.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Fritz: How old are we talking, what kind of guys (suits, hipster, etc)? Help us help you.

_______________________

Mt Pleasant: Any bars carrying the delicious Dogfish Head Punkin Ale in bottles or on draft? I have already made a trip out the the ale house in 7 Corners and it was really worth it, but I'm wondering if there's somewhere a little closer to home (and more metro accessible)?

Thanks!

Fritz: Good question, and as best I can tell, the answer is "No." It's not on at Rustico, Birreria, etc. Just talked to someone at R.F.D. and they don't have it either.

_______________________

For the Lefty Lush: Coniston's Blue Bird Bitter (spiked with a heaping teaspoon of civility) is, in my humble opinion, the better of the Coniston offerings.

Fritz: It's certainly my favorite, but I was going for a theme, however loosely or badly.

_______________________

Re: Karaoke emergency: I've been to Cafe Muse and love it, but Annandale is a little far from Silver Spring for a rainy Saturday night. If you know of anywhere else for karaoke/noraebang up in the Northern Beltway area, we'd love to hear about it.

Fritz: I don't, I'm afraid, except for the slightly dodgy one in Wheaton that you know about -- or in D.C. for that matter, where karaoke is a big-crowd event, especially on weekends, but you might try calling ahead and reserving a table at Cafe Japone downtown.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Gurus- My girlfriend has been studying like crazy for the LSAT and I was hoping to do something fun this weekend to give her a break...it looks like it is going to rain all weekend. Any fun indoor ideas you can think of?

Anne: I think going to the Jim Henson exhibit can be some loopy fun, or you could swap that for a Jim Henson-related screening at AFI. There are also some love story movies at National Gallery this weekend to take your mind off things. But if I could put in a plug for what I think is one of the area's wackiest events, I'd say, reserve your spot at Slugfest and be a kid again.

_______________________

U Street: I'm going to POTUS Among Us on Saturday night, and have never gone out in that area. Suggestions for grabbing a drink or two after?

Fritz: Well, U Street and 14th Street get pretty congested on Saturday nights, but I'd say Bar Pilar, the Saloon or Solly's would be good stops for a drink, and maybe Cafe Nema if you don't mind some noise (and jazz).

_______________________

NY, NY: Please help. I am coming from out of town for a blind date. She lives here, so anywhere in D.C. would be fine. We are both in our late 20s, no limit on the cost -- but somewhere fun so I could impress her. Thanks

Julia: Look at you! This must be some lady.

Wish I had more info to go on here -- where in D.C.? what night of the week? etc. -- but sans that, I'll focus on dinner. Proof is among my favorite places to eat in the city, but it's up there in terms of cost. Ditto Brasserie Beck, but the festive atmosphere and delicious beers could make for a really fun date. Looking for something less expensive? Kaz Sushi Bistro strikes me as a great date spot.

Co Co. Sala has been maligned in this chat before by readers, but the chocolate tasting menu strikes me as a perfect after dinner treat for a date that's going well.

Good luck!

_______________________

Silver Spring, MD: Hello! I'm getting conflicting reports on the opening of the Montgomery Drafthouse in Wheaton. Are they open yet? I saw a listing on goldstar.com that they have a comedian coming tomorrow night, but their website says nothing...what's the deal? Thanks!

Jen: Hey there. I was just touring the new Drafthouse yesterday, as a matter of fact. (A GoG blog post will come early next week.)

The Drafthouse was supposed to open tomorrow but as of yesterday afternoon, the date has been pushed back to next Friday. So unless you plan to crack jokes in the Westfield Wheaton parking lot -- and I am certainly not discouraging that -- I don't think you'll be seeing any comedy there tomorrow night.

_______________________

Foggy Bottom: Gurus, please help me! I need to try to plan a happy hour for about 40-50 grad students halfway between UMCP and GWU. I'm thinking that the Chinatown area's probably best for this, but which bars could best accommodate a group like this? Nothing too crazy, but a decent beer selection is always appreciated!

Fritz: I'd say try Bar Louie is a good bet, or, depending on the night, R.F.D. You can reserve the back room and *PICK YOUR OWN BEERS FOR THE 10 TAPS* for like $80/hour, plus the cost of beer. I've heard from a number of people who've done this with great success.

_______________________

Rosslyn: Is there anywhere I can go to get a good massage for under $50? My neck is insanely tense but I lack the $$ needed to hit the places that come to mind (Helo, Aveda...)

Stephanie: Speaking of Aveda, you may want to try the Aveda Institute, which offers services at reduced prices. If you can wait a few weeks for Spa Week, then that's another option; all services are $50 at participating stores.

_______________________

Anon: Hey Gurus,

To make this a going-out question, are there any friendly/cool places where dudes can be seen in public watching Gossip Girl?

David: Not sure if GG has made it to public watching level yet. Isn't it more of a text your friends about what just happened show rather than gather around with lots of them to talk about it show, anyway? And can we all agree that the end of the Dan/Serena relationship makes things so much better? Man were they nauseating together.

xoxo,
DM

Washington, D.C.: I had a really great pumpkin ale at Sticky Rice on H St. NE last weekend. Not sure if it's the one that was mentioned, but worth a try either way...

Fritz: I dunno. I was there last night and don't remember seeing one on the menu. If you just want *a* pumpkin ale, Post Road -- probably the best non-Dogfish pumpkin beer, for me -- is on at Birreria.

_______________________

Inside Weekend Stuff: Just a reminder that the Ansel Adams - Georgia O'Keefe exhibit opens Friday at American Art Museum/Portrait Gallery. Should be fun.

The Carrie Fisher show at Lincoln is definitely worth seeing, contains salty language.

Stephanie: Here are some suggestions from the peanut gallery. And I second the recommendation for Wishful Drinking, which is both inappropriate and hilarious--a winning combination.

_______________________

Lucky ocean lover: Hey 'rus! I am lucky enough to have an invitation to the Smithsonian Ocean Hall gala tonight. I don't want to miss this opportunity to party while dressed to the nines (the gala is black-tie), so I'm wondering if you can suggest somewhere else to go after it ends at 10. Thanks so much!

Fritz: Well, I've done Zola/Poste dressed to the nines before, and they're fairly close to the museum. Central would work, too.

But really, the answer is the Reef, so you can watch the tropical fish swimming around in those large tanks while sipping your drinks.

_______________________

Cheap massage: I am trying the Potomac Massage Training Institute in Friendship Heights next week. $55 for a recent grad. Cheaper for students (but instructors observe) and more for practitioners. I have high hopes

Stephanie: Another option for the cheap massage seeker.

_______________________

Reston, Va.: Hi GOGs! I was wondering if you know of any good (read: authentic) Cajun or New Orleans-style restaurants in the area (Northern VA or D.C.) I'm trying to find a good place to go on a date with a guy from that area (and impress him in the process!) Any ideas?

Julia: Tough call. Many expats find our version of NOLA cuisine lacking. I've always adored Acadiana's upscale take on the classics. It's pricey, so let's hope he's worth it.

Southside 815 is one that comes heavily recommended by chatters, but I haven't been there in ages.

_______________________

Laurel, Md.: My girl is coming up from Richmond and wants to go to a lounge type area where we can eat and that plays old skool R&B/rap on this Saturday. Should be about 6-8 girls.

Fritz: Jin is a pretty standard response here, and maybe the Park at 14th; if you call ahead and get a table, it's pretty easy to stick around all night.

_______________________

Mt. Pleasant: Imitation Dogfish Head pumpkin ales need not apply. Believe me, there is a difference!

Fritz: Oh, I know. I hate pumpkin beers, but I like Dogfish's.

Washington, D.C.: HELP! I have 6 family members in town (ranging from dear grandma to very midwestern aunt)... anyway, we are planning a day trip to either baltimore or annapolis on Sunday, so that we can do an airport drop off at BWI afterwards... which city do you recommend? Baltimore or Annapolis? Any great food stops at either? Or must see's? Thank you!!

Fritz: I think that logistically, Annapolis is the answer. It's closest to BWI -- pretty much a straight shot up 97 from downtown to the airport -- but the colonial charm would work for people of all ages. (Caveat: It's supposed to rain on Sunday, which makes strolling around a lot harder.) For food, Tom Sietsema like the Chart House, where I've never been, but I like the Boatyard Bar & Grill, a favorite of Annapolis yachters, which always has fantastic seafood.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Late questions...but, I love the city guide especially for picking a day and then searching for all things that are going on. I was wondering if there was ever a way to narrow the search by time. For example if I am looking for something to do after work, it takes awhile to read all of the gallery exhibits which wouldn't be open any way. Any chance of a day vs. night option?

Thanks!

Julia: Thanks for saying you love us. We love you too, reader. The bad news is this isn't something that's in the works for our next release of the City Guide. But the good news is we're always looking for ways to improve it, so we'll keep this suggestion handy.

A tip: When you search by day, the results are sorted in such a way that all of the events that are just-happening-that-day/night will be at the top of the list. So, if you notice that you start clicking through a page or two of exhibits/plays, you've probably worked your way through things happening that night. Unless you're looking for ongoing happy hours. In that case, you can narrow your search-by-day search by typing "happy hour" in the "keyword" box at the bottom of the lefthand column.

Guess that was more like two tips. I guess I really am a City Guide power user.

Chinese in N. Arlington: Hunan #1 used to be great before changed hands few years ago. I used to see the owner from Peking Duck eat there late at night. I think the Chinese restaurant in Harrison St. Shopping Center is better. It's on Lee Hwy and Harrison St. Sorry, Can't remember name.

Julia: More on Chinese.

Arlington, Va.: GOGs, as a new mom I'll admit "going out" has been off my radar for awhile. I read an article awhile back about events for parents and their kids, and friends recommended Rock N Tot which I see has now ceased operations in the DC area. Have you heard of anything similar? Yes, I know it's not as hip as the latest bar openings, but I'm taking baby steps...

Stephanie: There is something similar called Baby Loves Disco that comes to Rock and Roll Hotel periodically. It looks like the next one is October 11.

Not worth the tears: Hey guys really hoping you can help on this one...long-time friend, newly single, just found out her ex that she used to live with and broke up with 4 months ago is dating someone new. Needless to say she is a real Debbie Downer lately (somewhat justified). Need to get her out on the town for some fun with two single party pros to at least flirt with some hotties. Requirements: DC, alcohol, fun crowd (late 20's and up) relatively inexpensive (my broke butt is only even going out in an effort to cheer her up) Absolute no-no's: popped collars, $15 mixed drinks, and bad music. Thanks so much!!!

Fritz: Well, tonight, I'd say the Yacht Rock party at Saint-Ex -- I mean, yeah, dancing to Steely Dan or Hall and Oates may be a guilty pleasure, but it's a lot of fun.

If you're looking for this weekend, I'd say you should stick to the tried-and-true. Madhatter, Sign of the Whale, Lucky Bar, maybe Adams Mill -- places you know the on-the-prowl crew are gonna be heading.

Washington, D.C.: Let's go Caps! It's almost hockey season again, with the first home preseason game tonight. How do you feel about Nando's as a place to eat before the game? I've heard mixed things about the service when it opened, but was wondering if it has improved.

Fritz: I eat there religiously when I'm in Chinatown. Since you go up to the counter to order and get your own silverware/drinks/sauces, all the service entails is bringing you your food. A friend of mine had to ask where one of her sides was on a recent visit, but for the most part, it's been pretty smooth.

Silver Spring, Md.: Like a lot of people, I am broke, struggling to pay my mortgage and have kids. I also have an anniversary this weekend for which I am most grateful. Any ideas of free stuff to do on Saturday afternoon?

Anne: Is this free stuff that you would do with the kids or without them? If we're talking free, I think you might have to get creative. You could go to the National Archives and stay dry and watch National Treasure II at noon (can't say it's a great movie, but your kids might like it, and you can say it's because your spouse is a treasure. Awwwwww.) And here are some goofball believe-it-and-it's-true ideas that aren't totally free, but pretty close: National Building Museum is a gorgeous space, so you can hang out in the Great Hall and pretend you're the stars of a ball and dance to your own music while the kids run around. Or smooch in the rain, and ride the carousel at Glen Echo for $1.

Dallas, Tex.: I hope I'm not too late. Do you know how strict park police are at say the Washington Monument or Lincoln Memorial about alcohol? I am coming up this weekend to propose to my girlfriend and if/when she says yes, I would like to have a bottle of champagne there and pour a couple of glasses to celebrate. But I don't want to spend our engagement night in jail. Help?

Julia: The official answer is "strict." And I should tell you not to bring any. Though, I have to say, it would take a pretty hard-nosed Park Police guy to haul a happy couple into jail for a taste of champagne.

Anyway, to play it safe, sparkling cider could be cute. (Maybe?) You could also just plan to have a bottle of champagne on ice back at your place or at a nearby bar.

Alexandria, Va.: Is there anywhere in the area (preferably NOVA) that regularly shows Nebraska Cornhusker football games other than Union Pub?

Fritz: That's the only "official" location that's guaranteed to get a lot of alumni, but I'm willing to bet you'll find some 'huskers at Crystal City Sports Pub, where it seems like every division 1 school has at least a couple of fans watching the game.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Guys,

Please please help me out...I am running out of time. I am looking for a place to hold my wedding reception for 100 people. I want a hall/mansion not a hotel. I want to bring my own food and drinks. I was looking for something nice but not expensive in DC or 10-15 minutes drive from DC. Please help me.

Julia: Read this chat for a bunch of suggestions from me and the readers on this very topic. I also realized later that I forgot to mention Sewall Belmont and the Carnegie Instituton on 16th Street as possible suggestions. (Though, I wasn't in love with the Carnegie Building).

Watching my 401(k) Tank....: New to the District, please forgive me if this is a silly question. I am wanting to throw some putrid, rotting vegetables at the Capitol and White House - could I get in trouble for this?

Stephanie: That depends on your definition of trouble. Are you in the mood to get tased?

8th and I: Hey GOGs...

Tomorrow's my birthday, and my parents want to take me (turning 23) out somewhere for dinner. I want somewhere that is interesting and lively, but also somewhere my parents will be happy. Somewhere around Dupont would be best, and price is not an issue. I'd prefer something American-ish, or maybe Italian, but not Thai or Indian.

Stephanie: What about Darlington House? I went last weekend for brunch and was really impressed by the food and service.

Re: Ann Taylor Loft, from last week: I don't understand. I thought you guys were cool, and yet you're trying to shame those of us who buy our work wear at Ann Taylor Loft? Um, why? What's your point there? I don't have the time or, frankly, interest in shopping to go down to Georgetown or U Street every time I need something for the office. Ann Taylor Loft makes some clothes that look good on me, there's always something on sale, and if I end up disliking a purchase, I can return it to whichever store I happen to be close to at the time. I have a serious job and a young-looking face, so I can't go with funky just for funk's sake anyhow. That store (and others like it, and clearance places like Ross and Marshall's) has clothes that I look professional in and can afford.

I turn to you for recommendations for places to go and things to do, but I don't expect you to rip on me if I happen to do something that falls outside the scope of your recommendations. What's next, are you going to start mocking me for getting my hair done at my usual place, instead of dropping everything and heading to Bang on your say-so?

Fritz: Sorry we weren't clear. If you read the transcript, the snarky comments -- which originated from a chatter -- were more about the fact that most consignment stores -- including Secondi -- don't consider Ann Taylor or Ann Taylor Loft to be a "top brand." (If you want to see what Secondi is looking for, check this list of acceptable brands.)
That's all.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Going Out Gurus, I need a new happy hour spot in Clarendon for Friday, preferably somewhere where I can get a (vegetarian) snack with my drinks. I like Liberty Tavern but need a break from going there. Thanks!

Fritz: I like Galaxy Hut. (Mmmm. Cosmic melt.) Total 180 from Liberty, though. What about Sette Bello? Or the awesomely satisfying Melanzane alla Parma at Faccia Luna? (That's eggplant, mozzarella and marinara.)

Julia also just tossed out the idea of La Tasca, too.

Best chinese food in Arlington: Mrs. Chen's Kitchen in Arlington off of Columbia Pike about 2 miles west of the Pentagon. A ton of really good food for a SUPER cheap price.

Julia: Another suggestion.

Clarendon, Va.: Hi Anne, Julia and other wedding experts, I am getting married next year and am looking for a nice store with lots of varieties of wedding gowns and bridemaid dresses. Do you have any that you recommend? So far, I went to Lady Hamilton and I liked it.

Anne: I'm no wedding expert -- seems like Stephanie and Fritz each have gone to about 50 weddings this year so far. In fact, I'm a terrible one to ask, because in the end, I had friend of a friend make my dress. I think you should just figure out what designers you like and check out a store that carries that line -- for me, the area store I thought had the most variety of dresses was Robinson's, which is quite a trek -- and pricey. I also considered a dress at I Do, I Do. Now Julia and I also checked out Rizik's, but I'll let her share that story.

Julia: Okay, I ended up buying my dress at Riziks, because I got it on super sale during a sample sale in December. The collection there isn't exactly youthful, but this one was sorta fun.

Anyway, the alteration process was a complete debacle, which mainly involved having three women poke me and telling me to lose 10 pounds in a week. And, like a grownup bridezilla, I broke into tears. So basically, I ended up with a good product, but I didn't think the alteration process was well handled. If I had it to do over again I would have taken the dress elsewhere for alterations -- without the commentary.

Anonymous: On Mon., 10/6 at 7 PM, Washington National Opera's apprentice program--the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artists--are performing "La Traviata" at the Kennedy Center. It's a fully staged and orchestrated production conducted by General Director (and one of the Three Tenors) Placido Domingo.

This performance is part of WNO's Generation O program, which is for young pros 35 and under. The Young Artists are all in their 20s and 30s--great way to get young pros into opera!

Tickets start at $15 and there's a cocktail hour at the KC starting at 6 PM that's an additional $25. Call 202.295.2400 or 800.US.OPERA for tickets or sign up on the Web site for Generation O at dc-opera.org. Remember to use source code 7399.

Fritz: Yeah, yeah, I know this is a plug, but as someone who's taken advantage of Generation O deals -- and plans to, as long as I can -- it's an excellent deal all around.

Dupont Circle: Original snarky clothing commenter here. I wasn't knocking your Ann Taylor, I just don't think any consignment store is going to want it! Thought it might save you the trouble of lugging all your gear to the store. I don't have a car so that would certainly be a hassle for me.

I might have been a tad harsh, but hey, I've got attitude, deal with it!

Fritz: See? We're all just one big happy family here in GotPlansland.
