Janet Bennett Kelly: Good morning, chatters, and thanks for joining Holly and me on what promises to be a sultry day. Speaking of sultry, would love to hear you comments about wearing boots in summer. I recently noticed a Ralph Lauren ad hawking new "summer" boots and my faithful prognosticator of fashion trends -- my neighbor's six-year-old daughter --has been asking her mother if she can wear boots with her sundress. Anyone have an opinion on this? In the meantime, we'd love to hear any and all of your questions, and as always, we've got goodies: a shimmery bronzing highlighter from Estee Lauder and an intensive heel cream from Ms. Pedicure. Winners should e-mail us at fashion@washpost.com. And now, let's get going.

Washington, D.C.: Hello, fashion mavens-- I'm heading to New York City this weekend to visit several friends. I'll be doing some shopping, going out for a couple of nice meals and going out to some bars on Saturday night. What should I wear to fit in with the New York City scene? Are jeans okay? Can I wear flats while shopping, or do I need to wear heels? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!
Janet Bennett Kelly: Hi, there, D.C.,
Sounds like a fun weekend. It depends on the venue, but I'd say jeans are okay except for really high-end chi-chi places. That said, though, I'd dress up the jeans with a pair of colorful or jeweled heels and add some femme to the look with a ruffly blouse or pile on some necklaces to adorn a plain T-shirt. Any sequin T-shirts in your wardrobe? That would work, too. I'd say you could definitely wear flats while shopping, but you might want to bring along a pair of heels if you find something and want to see how it looks with your pumps/wedges, etc.

Boots with dress.: I love the look! Haven't tried it because as of now, I can't really afford cowboy/girl boots. Unless someone can direct me to an affordable retailer? But doesn't it get hot? How do you prevent massive amounts of foot sweat?
Janet Bennett Kelly: Good questions. Anyone have a answer?

Detroit, Mich.: I am obsessed with stripes....especially black and white ones. I bought an adorable black and white striped shrunken blazer a couple months ago, and now am at a loss of how to wear it. It's bold, so I know I have to tone down the rest of my outfit, but how can I pair the blazer so I don't look like a prison inmate?
Holly Thomas: Hi Detroit! I think the key here is to make sure there's a lot of contrast between the tone of your blazer and that of the rest of your outfit. Since it sounds like your topper is pretty structured, try it with slouchy-fit, worn-in jeans and a pair of tough sandals. Or maybe a floaty black dress for dressier occasions?

Dupont Circle: Hi there, a couple of weeks ago I read an article online featuring people on the street with great fashion. Is this a regular feature and if so, where can I find it online? Thanks!
Holly Thomas: Thanks for following Street Style! It is a regular feature, running one Sunday a month ... you can see the next one on June 28.

Washington, D.C.: I'm a 25 year old woman working in D.C. at a new job, and the employee handbook is extremely vague about the dress code, with no specific examples for men or women. It encourages all employees to dress professionally -- but in my experience, professional can mean business casual, or a suit every day.
Other women at my office dress in business casual attire and in pants suits and skirt suits. Should I take this to mean that either is acceptable? My boss (older, in her 30s) wears a skirt suit or pants suit every day, but I think her style is very basic, without much flair. Other women, closer to my age, are opting for a little more color and a little more fashion. Are all of us younger women committing a fashion faux pas in the workplace?
Janet Bennett Kelly: I don't think the company handbook would have anything to say about flair. Think it's perfectly okay to show you have some personality in your clothes with color and some fashionable accents.

Falls Church, Va.: Hello,
I am hoping you can help me. I have a few barbecues and parties to go to this summer. I want to update my wardrobe without breaking the bank. Some of the things I am looking to buy are the new long dresses and a pair of jeans. For the jeans, should i get skinny or bootcut, what's the newest trend? And where do I get cute long dresses for a reasonable price? Thank you!
Janet Bennett Kelly: Skinny jeans are still in style, and so are bootcut, along with roomier boyfriend jeans. Acid-washed and distressed are the newest trends, but the most important thing is picking a style that flatters you! As for the maxi dresses, take a look at what South Moon Under has to offer.

Washington D.C.: Re: cowboy boots. I suppose there are several definitions of "affordable" but I spotted some really great Fry cowboy boots in Nordstrom the other day. You'll be looking at $120 to $160 for those boots. For something cheaper, try browsing department stores for house brands, or try DSW. The key with cowboy boots is for the leather to look naturally weathered. Otherwise they look cheap and plastic-y.
Holly Thomas: Good tips for finding cowboy boots -- eBay is another great spot for finding weathered pairs. I've also heard good things about Carol's Western Wear, which has locations in Glen Burnie and Laurel as well as a website -- CarolsWesternWear.com

Central Va.: Speaking of boots, we got back from Paris about a week ago and were amazed how many women were wearing boots around the city. The attire was anywhere from suits to jeans worn with boots ...
Holly Thomas: I'm always amazed to see how timeless and chic a pair of American cowboy boots look on the streets of Rome and London -- and how popular they are!

Rockville, Md.: Good morning Janet & Holly, Please help! I work in a professional office which mean I need to dress appropriately, I don't care for suits so I tend to wear dress pants and blouses or sweaters. My problem is the dress pants; I am not able to find high-waist pants. Any ideas? Most everything I find sits down on the hips and sticks out in the back barely covering the behind. It's so frustrating: I hate to go shopping, I will try on 12-15 pairs of pants and will maybe find one or two that fit properly. Can you help?
Janet Bennett Kelly: Rockville, I hear your frustration. Banana Republic has several different fits I know. Have you tried their different styles? I wish I could give you a fool-proof answer, but it's just a matter of trying and trying again. One solution is to try a higher-end brands, which usually have fuller, higher cuts.

Re: Maxi dresses: The poster should also take a look at Martin + Osa and Boden. They both have some cute long dresses (and M+O has good sales from time to time).
Holly Thomas: Very cute finds at Martin + Osa, especially the Inverted Halter Jersey option. On the high-end side, Cusp has some nice versions from Tory Burch, Milly and Tibi.

Vienna, Va.: I'm vacationing in France this summer (Paris and Alsace) and what to know what to wear to look appropriate, but still be comfortable to sight see and not have to pack a huge amount of luggage. I've heard Paris is dressy, but Alsace should be more casual, right?
Janet Bennett Kelly: Hi, Vienna,
Alsace and Paris sound divine! I wouldn't necessarily equate Paris with dressy and Alsace with not. It depends where you go. But you don't have to pack an entirely different wardrobe for each city. Pack basics -- cropped black pants, white or beige pencil skirt, knits -- that you can dress up or dress down with jewelry, given the venue or occasion.

New York: This question may be more appropriately answered as a feature article, but I thought I'd put it out there.
I just received a promotion and want to step up appearances while still being appropriate and true to myself.
I work at a business casual investment bank, but for many reasons (like the fact that I am one of very few women, short and look very young), I want to wear a suit every day.
That said, our firm is young, with a wide irreverent streak given the business. If I dared wear pantyhose (I'm not tempted), people would wonder what's wrong with me. Sensible pumps, and people would be taking my temperature.
How would I regularly dress down a suit, keeping it young and modern, but still north of business casual?
Holly Thomas: Congrats on the promotion! I'd recommend playing with color and accessories -- try out a couple chunky necklaces or a brightly-hued shell or button-down. And there are a couple shoe brands that turn out work-appropriate pumps that are still funky -- I like Faryl Robin, Chie Mihara and Sam Edelman, for starters.

Baltimore:, Md. I've purchased two pairs of cowboy boots for reasonable prices at Zappos and love them. They have a good selection. Also, there are much more reasonable long dresses at Target and Old Navy -- South Moon Under is pricey!
Holly Thomas: Good advice! Old Navy and Target are must-visit spots if you want to dabble in the maxi trend without breaking the bank.

Superpower lipstick: I recently tried one of the super-long-lasting lipsticks (the kind that has a color you let dry, then a clear gloss topcoat). I like it, and it does wear all day, but how do I get it off? I've tried cold cream, Vaseline, soap and a washcloth in the shower, but there are still traces left. Seems like a dumb question, I know, but what am I missing here?
RE foot sweat and boots: I try two things - first, use some of your usual deodorant/antiperspirant on the bottoms of your feet. Seriously. Second, shake a little powder (baby powder or a medicated powder like Goldbond) into your socks before putting the boots on. Either or both helps a lot.
Janet Bennett Kelly: Wow, that is really super long-lasting lipstick. Neutrogena makes a makeup remover that has worked for me on most occasions. What's the name of the company that makes this lipstick -- they should know what removes it!
And thanks for the tips on foot sweat and boots.

Boots in Summer: I love the boots with dresses look, however it can get very hot. So, to combat the problem, I picked up these perforated booties from Aldo. It gives me the look I'm going for, while giving me the comfort I need during the summer months. Got many compliments; and they are pretty different, but that's just my style.
And I got them on sale! Score!
Janet Bennett Kelly: Good for you, and great find!

Alexandria, Va.: The 20s had a style, so did the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Then I draw a blank. If I wanted to make a movie set in the 1990s, what would I wear? Have we lost a recognizable style?
Holly Thomas: There's a major 90s-fashion revival right now ... think buffalo plaid shirts, grunge-era destroyed jeans, sandals that look more like combat boots than beachwear, and flirty floral slip-dresses under denim vests. It's a look best done in moderation (like most decade-centric trends) and, in my opinion, works best on the younger set. For inspiration, rent "Reality Bites" or a couple seasons of "My So-Called Life."

dress pants: I really like Anne Taylor Loft. I'm a curvy gal but often have success there with cuts that flatter. Plus, good sales and the regular prices are not as high as Banana Republic, although I like them too!
Janet Bennett Kelly: For dress pants with cuts that flatter, this chatter heads to Anne Taylor Loft.

Arlington, Va.: I appreciate Anne Hathaway's ability to embrace her pale skin, however I feel prettier with a healthy glow. I have a reunion this weekend, and a lot of work to do, so no time to bask in the sun (and no desire for wrinkles!) so what's my best plan? I noticed the bronzer you mentioned in the intro paragraph- does that sort of thing look natural? What about Estee Lauder spray-on? Or a professional spray tan? Jergen's lotion? What works best on Irish skin? Thanks!
Holly Thomas: The bronzer we're giving away works best as a highlighter, since it's shimmery, but an all-over bronzing powder might be a good bet if you just want a hint of color on your cheekbones and collarbones. Choose one a few shades darker than your skin, but not so dark that it looks like warpaint. If you want a full-body tan, we've tested (and continue to use) self-tanning formulas from Darphin, Sisley, Jergens and Lancaster.

Washington, D.C.: Hello Fashionistas!
I am a 20-something professional who is stuck in a Banana Republic/J. Crew rut. It's what I can afford, not really what inspires me. Can you suggest some alternatives that strike the balance between professional and creative/unique? Also, any ideas as to comfortable shoes to walk to the Metro? I know Carbon is often suggested, but I can't afford $250 shoes!
Janet Bennett Kelly: How about shaking up your rut by adding a vintage piece from a store like Annie Creamcheese in Georgetown? Shoes can change the look of an uninspiring outfit as can jewelry or a colorful tote. For comfortable walking shoes, try Geox (sold at Nordstrom) or Cole Haan. I think they have some styles that are less expensive than $250.

Canada: Are the new long dresses dressy enough to wear to a wedding?
Janet Bennett Kelly: Hi, Canada,
I have to say it depends on the dress and depends on how dressy the wedding is. Most of these new long dresses in my opinion work well for garden parties and barbecues. So, if the wedding is on the casual side, yes; if it's formal, I think not.
_______________________
Alexandria, Va.: Good morning, fashionistas! Please help me pick some shoes for a dress for weddings this summer. It is green and purple -- and while that sounds pretty funky, the real thing is better. Silver (muted)? Gold (muted)? Beige?
Here is a link.
Thanks!
Janet Bennett Kelly: Hi, Alexandria,
Cute dress. I'd go with something in the muted silver family or pale pink patent leather, if you could find it.

Philadelphia, Penn.: Hi. That description of the woman who wears pants suits or skirt suits to work "without much flair" could be me. I'm a lawyer in a city office, 5'2", slightly overweight, and I really prefer to blend into the scenery. But I know my wardrobe is dull as dishwater and I'm sick of looking at the dark suits in my closet. What can I do to add some "flair" to these basics while not drawing attention to my pear shape?
Holly Thomas: I think incorporating some fun jewelry and bold colors will spice up your look and draw the eye up towards your face. Experiment with bright, high-necked or ruffled blouses, and tuck them under a neutral blazer if you want to tone them down a little. A pair of chandelier earrings or a dazzling statement necklace will go a long way towards making you feel more stylish -- get the most bang for your buck at Forever 21, TopShop and H&M.

Penn Quarter: I'm trying to find a decent-sized bag -- not a purse or a handbag -- for carrying stuff. I'm having a hard time and am hoping you can help.
I need a bag that's big enough to carry lunch, gym clothes and books for a class that I'm taking, but which is a little more work-appropriate than most of the gym bags I see. I'm not such a fan of bags with a single shoulder strap because I feel weighed down on one side, and I like the idea of a messenger bag, but they always seem to wind up cutting across my chest in a weird and unflattering way. So that seems to leave a backpack as the best option, but wearing an L.L. Bean-type backpack with a work dress just feels like a giant fashion faux pas.
Any suggestions for something with a little style?
Janet Bennett Kelly: Funny, I'm on the lookout now for a good-looking backpack. I saw one in Barneys this weekend that was yellow and gray. Unfortunately, I can't remember the brand, but I noticed the store carried a messenger bag by the same one. For a less expensive option, try Loehmann's -- they have lots of bags to choose from. And, maybe amid the piles, there's one that will work for you!

Olney, Md.: I am going to a wedding this weekend. The invitation said "Black tie invited." I bought a ball gown-ish dress in dark burgundy (taffeta-ish material) with a few little pull-ups on the skirt. Now I'm worried that the dress is going to be too dressy. Am I right? If I wear very limited jewelry will I be okay?
Janet Bennett Kelly: Not sure I understand the code for that invitation. By any chance, did it say "black tie optional?" But the fact that black tie was on the invitation gives you license to dress up in that burgundy taffeta. If you feel slightly uncomfortable, yes, hold the jewelry.

Re: shoes for green & purple dress: For the pale pink patent leather that was suggested, try searching for "nude" shoes (on sites such as Zappos). When I was in the market for nude shoes, many were more on the pale pink side.
Janet Bennett Kelly: Thanks, good idea, for the chatter searching for shoes for her green and purple dress.

Palo Alto, Calif.: I would like (occasionally) to be able to dress like Patti Smith in one of her semi-piratical sartorial moods. I have the black stovepipe jeans, but have never been able to find a large white button-down shirt that doesn't look too boxy. I've tried the men's shirts at J. Crew, but they're a bit too square-shaped. And I've tried going up a few sizes in women's blouses, but the darts always make them look distinctly un-piratical. Any thoughts on how/where I could find a Patti Smith-style button-down?
Holly Thomas: I love the Patti Smith reference -- what an icon! Lucky for you, I literally saw this Elizabeth and James dolman sleeve cotton shirt on the Nordstrom website five minutes ago -- I think it's just what you're looking for...

Banana Republic/J. Crew rut: I'm there too. Check out Club Monaco and Zara -- they tend not to be quite as basic but have a lot of things that are still appropriate for work. For shoes to wear while commuting, check out DSW. They have a lot of well-priced flats.
Janet Bennett Kelly: For the chatter seeking to emerge from her Banana/J. Crew rut, this chatter says try Zara and Club Monaco.

Baby slings: Do you know which slings/carriers are good for overweight/large breasted moms? Do any local stores carry them so they can be tried on before buying?
Holly Thomas: I haven't been there yet, but you might try the new Giggle store that's opening in Friendship Heights this weekend, near the Bloomingdale's. They might have what you want, or at least some good advice -- check out Giggle.com before you go.

Temperature Control: Hi ladies! The weather is muggy outside, but the air inside the office is freezing! What is a chic way of keeping warm in the office without sacrificing style? Right now, I'm using a hand embroidered shawl I got in India, but sometimes feel that I look like I am wrapped up in a blanket. Is there something other than a boring sweater that I can throw on that won't compete with the rest of my office look?
Janet Bennett Kelly: Have you looked at cardigans lately -- they're not so boring. I love J. Crew's with the ruffles and the chiffon detailing. Also, White + Warren makes a lightweight sweater wrap in coral and in white that's very attractive and useful to throw on over your outfit. I saw one yesterday at Wear It Well.

Pennsylvania: Good morning! I'm looking for a new makeup line. I've been wearing Burt's Bees makeup, which I loved because the colors were great, it was easy on the environment and my skin, and it wasn't expensive. However, the line was discontinued a year or so ago, and I'm coming to the end of my supplies.
Any suggestions for a replacement line? I'm a fair, blue-eyed blonde who doesn't wear much makeup (mostly just lipstick and powder, occasionally eye color). I'm also verging on 40, so I'd like to stay away from the teenybopper lines. Bonus points if recommendations are:
-Envionmentally friendly
-Age appropriate
-Inexpensive
-Readily available (I live in a mid-sized college town with limited shopping; no Sephora, for example.)
Thanks much...love the chats.
Holly Thomas: I think Physician's Formula is a good option for you -- they just came out with a new line of eco-friendly products, they're available (affordably) in drugstores and are suited for more mature skin types.
_______________________
Janet Bennett Kelly: That's all we have time for today. The heel cream appropriately goes to the chatter who recommended antiperspirant to avoid foot sweating in boots and to the Baltimore chatter who suggested looking for maxi dresses at Target and Old Navy, you get the highlighting bronzer.
Send your name and address to fashion@washpost.com, and we'll get those right out to you. See you in two weeks.
