NEW RELEASES
The Joker Rules the 'Knight'
'The Dark Knight'/Warner Bros. Stephen Hunter finds "The Dark Knight" too long and lacking focus. But Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker is worth the price of admission: "He's supple of body, expressive with only his eyes, and his voice has undulations of irony and mockery and psychopathology to it. He's an essay -- in a way he's never before been, playing straight-faced characters -- in pure charisma."

Meryl Streep, Dancing Queen?
'Mamma Mia!'/Universal Ann Hornaday praises Meryl Streep's giddy performance in "Mamma Mia!." But she also points out that this musical can get irritating, fast: "Loud, forced, occasionally crotch-grabbingly crude, 'Mamma Mia!' is so fueled by the shrieking-banshee vibe of a drunken hen party that it makes the cafe confabs of "Sex and the City" girls look like a meeting of the Ms. editorial board."

"Most adults like to think there's still a little 6-year-old inside them. Well, mine isn't talking to me anymore, not since I took him to 'Space Chimps.'"

-- John Anderson on 'Space Chimps'
