Farrah Fawcett: 1947 - 2009

Remembering the career and life of the actress, television star and '70s pop culture icon.

Actress and pop culture icon Farrah Fawcett died from a long battle with cancer in Santa Monica, Calif.

Early in her career, Fawcett was cast in commercials and bit parts in movies and television series such as "The Partridge Family" and "I Dream of Jeannie." It would be her role as Jill Munroe on the 1970s show "Charlie's Angels" and posing for her bestselling red swimsuit poster, however, that would make her a household name.

Fawcett starred on the show alongside Jaclyn Smith, second from right, and Kate Jackson, bottom left. After the end of season one, however, she left the show to pursue film roles. Fawcett would later return to the show for guest spots in a recurring role for seasons three and four.

In some of her later work, Fawcett took on less glamorous roles -- from a single mom looking for love to doing animated voiceovers. She's seen here in a promotional photo for the 1995 film "Man of the House" with actors Chevy Chase, top left, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas.

She was a preacher's unfaithful wife in the 1998 film "The Apostle" with co-star Robert Duvall as her husband.

In 1999, she returned to the set of the "Late Show With David Letterman" as a guest for the second time. Fawcett's first appearance in 1997, where many accused her of having been intoxicated, received much scrutiny.

Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006. After undergoing traditional methods of treatment, the disease went into remisssion but soon returned in mid-2007. Since that time, she'd sought out alternative medical treatments abroad.

In 2001's television movie "Jewel," she played a southern woman struggling with raising a child with Down Syndrome in Mississippi during the 1940s. A native Southerner herself, Fawcett hailed from Corpus Christi, Tex.

Her on-again/off-again relationship with fellow actor Ryan O'Neal made headlines and spanned 30 years. He is the father of Fawcett's 24-year-old son, Redmond.

The NBC News documentary "Farrah's Story," which aired May 15, chronicled the actress's nearly three-year battle with the disease. Her best friend, Alana Stewart, shot the reality special with Fawcett's own home video camera. Nearly 9 million viewers watched the special.
