President Obama accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway, a week after announcing his plan to send more troops to Afghanistan.

The Obamas await the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony in Oslo. The president faced a tricky task of reconciling the revered honor with his decision just last week to send 30,000 troops to escalate the war in Afghanistan, a move which tripled the U.S. force there since he took office.

The committee, which is appointed by the Norwegian parliament, said Obama has "created a new climate in international politics." The group "in particular looked at Obama's vision and work toward a world without atomic weapons," committee Chairman Thorbjorn Jagland said.

In his acceptance speech, Obama directly confronted the seeming paradox of receiving the prestigious peace prize while serving as a war president. In trying to pursue both security and peace, he said, "war is sometimes necessary."

Obama received his award -- a diploma and a gold medal bearing the visage of Alfred Nobel -- the wealthy chemist and inventor of dynamite who endowed the prize more than a century ago -- before an audience of about 1,000.
