The end of 'Lost'

ABC's "Lost" ended its sixth and final season on Sunday, May 23. Here's a look at where some of our key characters ended up after a six-season run. WARNING: There be spoilers here, so don't continue if you haven't already watched the finale!

The rogue surgeon turned de facto leader of the Losties began the season bearing responsibility for "the incident," which apparently caused Juliet's demise. But in the end, he defeated the Man in Black (aka Smokey) to save the island and was ultimately forced to come to grips with his death.

<b>Benjamin Linus (Michael Emerson):</b>
In the season six sideways flashes, Ben was a school teacher with a steady moral compass. On the island, however, Ben seemed to be up to his old tricks, killing his nemesis, Charles Widmore, and reconnecting with the Man in Black. But, turns out he was a good guy -- of sorts -- after all, who aided in the Man in Black's demise and was finally able to apologize to John Locke for having done him wrong. Still, he didn't move on to the afterlife with the rest of the gang. Is the door open for a possible spin-off?

<b>Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell):</b>
Season six provided more information about the ageless, longtime island inhabitant, who arrived there when the Black Rock crashed ashore. Despite his seeming death at the hands of the Smoke Monster in the penultimate episode, Richard Alpert was just stunned and managed to live long enough to grow a grey hair and join Frank Lapidus's gang on the Ajira Airlines flight off the island.

John Locke (Terry O'Quinn): The one-time box company clerk was reincarnated as the Man in Black, aka the Smoke Monster, on the island and was determined to escape and, potentially, destroy the place in the process. Luckily, Jack was on hand to thwart his plans. In the sideways timeline, however, the real Locke regained his ability to walk after he allows Jack to operate on his spine. In a bittersweet ending, he forgives Ben Linus for, you know, killing him and moves into the great beyond alone without the love of his life, Helen.

This wise-cracking spiritualist (he talks to dead people) planned to blow up the Ajira Airlines plane, but ends up a passenger in its successful lift off from the island. What happened to the plane, though, is still a bit of a mystery. While some passengers -- Kate and Claire -- end up among the dead in the church, Miles is absent.

Dude, everyone needs a little comic relief. But don't sell Hurley short. On the island, he played a key role in making sure the core candidates -- Jack, Kate, himself and Sawyer -- met with Jacob. And after Jack successfully saves the island, Hurley was left in charge (with Ben as his unlikely no. 2). In the sideways timeline, he helped Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) get all the Losties back together and to the church on time.

His reunion with Juliet was one of the emotional high points of the finale.

In the sideways narrative, he orchestrated the reunion of our core characters, helping them to accept their deaths and finally move on.
