American Idol: The final 7
Alicia Keys mentored the 'Idol' contestants Tuesday night as they chose "songs of inspiration" in preparation for the show's annual "Idol Gives Back" charity program on Wednesday.
"Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac
"I'm just amazed you chose that song, because I think the theme this week is inspiration songs ... that wasn't particulary inspiring. Zero emotion ... You just stood there, played the guitar again and sang the song ... Which meant there was no originality. So I think it was actually a lazy song choice."
"The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel
"The difference between you and [Casey James's] performance was staggering. That was sincere, it was emotional, it was inspirational. I've never been a massive fan of that song but you made it sound as if that song was written a week ago. I thought it was absolutely brilliant. Good for you."
"Better Days" by The Goo Goo Dolls
"This may have been a step too high for you this week in terms of believing in the performance. Having said that, you have improved over the weeks. But it was a little bit of a letdown."
"I Believe I Can Fly" by R. Kelly
"I think we have to judge this in two parts which is you, knowing you, liking you and having the guts to take on the song ... then in the real world, had I heard it on the radio, I would've turned it ten seconds. Because it wasn't very good. But you kind of made it quite good."
"When You Believe" by Mariah Carey
"I don't think that was the right song for you. I thought the arrangement was very old-fashioned. Too much happened too quickly ... I just found the whole thing a bit odd, a bit all over the place really. It's a shame."
"Hero" by Nickelback
"I think you sang it pretty well, but once again, to remind us the theme tonight is inspirational songs and that was about Spider-Man ... it felt a bit artificial for me ... this kind of didn't quite gel for me, but I still think you're going to be around next week."
"People Get Ready" by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions
"Inspirational. You sang it fantastically. For me, it was in a completely different class than everything we heard tonight."
