For shipwreck survivor, a new honor and an old story

Lanier W. Phillips, along with comedian Bill Cosby and former Washington Redskins star Eddie LeBaron, was honored Wednesday with the U.S. Navy Memorial's Lone Sailor award, for veterans who have had distinguished civilian careers. Phillips, an African American scarred by childhood in the segregationist South, had his racial views changed by his rescue from a shipwreck.
