The season of hatred began with probably the biggest event of the year: the gulf oil spill. Tony Hayward, then chief of BP, provoked public outrage when he complained to a reporter, "I'd like my life back."

On May 30, the millionaire chief executive, whose company had just ruined the livelihoods of thousands of Gulf Coast residents, told a reporter, "I'd like my life back."
