After an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid in 2002, Democrat Andrew Cuomo was elected governor of New York in 2010. Prior to his election, he had been serving as the state's attorney general, where he launched a number of high-profile probes, including investigations into Wall Street banks and their actions during and leading up to the recent financial crisis. He also headed the Department of Housing and Urban Development during the Clinton administration.
