Expanding Influence

Hedge funds have grown in numbers and assets controlled. From 1987 to 2004, they averaged returns of
nearly 15 percent a year. Fund managers are becoming more activist, in part to help protect returns, which
were down about 1.6 percent in the first quarter of this year.
