Hurricane Katrina triggered the biggest one-week surge in jobless claims in nearly a decade. Applications for unemployment last week jumped 71,000, 68,000 of which were hurricane related. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the storm wiped out as many as 400,000 jobs.
