The 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment was deployed in Vietnam between 1966 and 1971, then deactivated. It was reflagged on July 21, 2004, for deployment to Iraq, a 12-month tour that began in January. While the casualties among the battalion mounted more rapidly in Vietnam, the unit has lost seven men.
