Inducing a Coma

Head trauma or stroke can cause brain tissues to swell inside the inflexible skull. Such pressure can severely restrict blood supply to the brain or squash brain tissues against bone, resulting in permanent brain damage or death. An induced coma attempts to slow the metabolism of the brain so that it can recover from an injury without suffering damage caused by swelling.
